My 2 1/2 year old is almost potty trained. It seems she has gotten the dreadful UTI. The doc has asked for a urine sample, however she says, "NO WAY". She will not let me get near her with the cup, any creative suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, thanks to everyone for all of your suggestions. I tried to bribe her with going to the store for new stickers if she peepeed in the cup and she said no. I tried a new toy and she said no. Then I told her about tomorrows party she is going to and she will see all her friends, she said no...so then I told her I had to still shop for the birthday present and I was going to find a nice gift for her too. We put the cup in the potty chair and she sat down and gave it her all. We only collected a little because she missed, but she agrees to try again tomorrow morning. She has never used the potty chair so this was a pretty big move for her. Thank you again!

BIG TIME BRIBERY!!!

Short of that, try putting a large container in the potty (like a tupperware container) that will catch the pee next time she goes or have her use a kiddie potty chair and harvest it from there. Good luck. This is a challenge.

You might want to use on of those older senior potty bowls and put in the toilet seat and that way she thinks she is doing on toilet and not on a cup.

good luck let me know if it works:)

Have you tried a baby training potty that has the little seat and catcher inside? I did this with my niece, to get her to do it I actually had to pretend to use it first which may be awkward but it worked...

If the doctor needs a urine sample, you CANNOT do a lot of the suggestions on here. The collection cup needs to be STERILE and plastic wrap or a potty chair is not sterile. She needs to pee in the sterile cup or you can ask your doctor for a urine collection bag. It just sticks to your daughters skin and will trap some urine to sample. If you don't use a sterile cup then the lab won't know if the bacteria that is growing is from her UTI or if it's from the plastic wrap or from the potty chair.

Do you still have a potty chair? She could go in it, and you could pour it into the Dr's cup. If not, you do it & maybe she will want to copy you. That is actually how my first child (daughter) potty trained in the first place. She always walked in after me, and watched. She was 18mo old, and I had my old potty chair in the bathroom, and she sat down one day on it, and pulled down her pants - and went! Girls are awesome! Good luck & God Bless!

I understand. I knew when my daughter had her three year check up that they needed a urine sample and thought OMG she won't pee in a cup. Your Ped should have a device similiar to the one they use to collect urine from you when you are in delivery it goes under the seat kids have no idea it is there. And you transfer into the cup. It's great I don't know the name but the nurses knew what I was talking about when I asked for it. My daughter had no idea done no problem. Your ped should have something like it for all the kids who won't pe in a cup. Good luck. Hope this helped

Hi C.:
Poor lil goil. Asking her to pee in a cup, when she just got the hang of peeing in the toilet! lol. It probably sounds totally bazzar to her.She must think you've lost it big time huh? lol Geez...Make up your mind mom...you kept pushin the toilet bowl, now its a lousy cup? I'm guessing, that she really is bothered mostly with the fact you want to hold the cup under her. I think I'd see if she wanted to hold the cup. Ask her if she thinks she could pee in the cup herself.I'd say.... see how much you can get in the cup!If she really fights it, my last resort, would be..."Well....if you don't pee in the cup, then the Dr will have to hold it for you. Its either you or me or the Dr? lol That may change her mind real quick.: )Good luck C. : )

I have a great story about this! My little girl also had the same thing happen. There was major drama at the doctor's office and finally the doctor said, "Well, here's the cup. Go home and see what you can do. Just bring me the urine today." I took her home and stood in the kitchen telling my husband about it and suddenly she trotted into the kitchen holding the FULL cup!!! I freaked! "How did you do that, honey?" She took me to the bathroom and said, "The EASY way, Mommy. I placed the cup into my potty and sat over it and went." Unreal! Your daughter is older and I'll BET you she can do it herself! Try it!

Best wishes from

I was going to suggest having her pee in a training potty, but I see someone already suggested that. Seems a natural to me! I would just add to wipe it out with a disinfectant first to make sure there are no bacteria that might be picked up in the culture.

do u still have the little potty u potty trained her on? you could have her potty into the little potty that doesn't have the water in it like a toilet. Just make sure it is very clean and sanitized and then pour her pee into the cup.

They have these little bags that they use on infants. You use the sticky part to hold the bag around them and when they go it catches the urine. You would have to do this in a diaper, because it does not catch all the urine. If she uses a training potty, you could just clean it out really well and then pour the urine into the cup when she is finished. If not, ask your doctor for a cup that sits on the inside of the toilet seat, I don't remember what they are called, but basically it hooks under the toilet seat and when she does her thing, it just catches it for you.

As a nurse I know the sample needs to be "clean" (ie not just poured from the potty chair). As a mom I know how hard it is to get a child to do something they don't want to do. Maybe try putting the sterile cup in the bowl of the potty seat and hopefully the stream will hit it. They don't need much to do the tests.

Hi C.,

At hospitals and nursing homes they have a toilet insert that catches the pee. I think they are disposable so you can ask them, or a pharmacy where you can get one. It shouldn't be expensive.

Ask the doctor to get you one of those toilet cups. Have you ever had surgery for something and they wanted to measure your pee while you were in the hospital? I have no idea what they are called. But i would think if you used that and then poured it into a cup that should be fine. Or sanitize her potty chair cup and use that.
Bribery is good too. Get her a new dolly or something if she will go pee in a cup.
My daughter had to have a cathider so they could get pee. That was not fun.
Good luck

ask for the toilet insert. it is a bin that goes into the toilet (under the seat and above the water) they pee in it and then you pour it into the cup. it really makes it easier.

C.,

Bribery worked for my son. Pee in the cup and you can have a cookie.

Worked like a charm. Is there something your daughter will do almost anything for? That is the magic ticket. LOL

Or, do you have a potty chair? If so, make sure it is clean and then have her pee in it and collect the urine.

do you have a training potty? use that then put it in a cup. I think you can get an attachment to the normal toilet that will collect it as well.

go to your nearest ER and ask for a "hat". its and insert you put into your toilet and pee or poop into. its steril, and you can transfer the urine into the collection cup after. just make sure to clean your daughter really well with a few wioes before she pees, wiping from front to back with each new wipe as to not contaminate the specimen. good luck.

Attach plastic wrap to the toilet bowl not tight so it makes a catch basin in the toilet. Have her pea as normal and then go in and extract it from the toilet. Sounds extreme, but effective and she may not even notice it there.

The doctor should have provided you with a STERILE cup or bag and antiseptic wipe... the sample has to be collected in a sterile cup or the test results can be compromised.
Here is a link on it:
http://www.nativeremedies.com/articles/toddler-children-u...

My girl had a UTI once... we took her to the ER, they did a catheter on her. Yes, it's not pleasant, but she was brave and handled it well. It was a pediatric hospital and they know how to handle the little children well, and have "child" size instruments.

If you can't get a sample otherwise.. then ask your Pediatrician for alternatives. I would think, that the doctor would not want to wait very long to get a sample...if it's a UTI, it has to be treated or it can affect her kidneys and cause complications. **Here is a link on the implications:

Try putting plastic wrap under the lid the us women need put down, make it sag so the pee won't flo over, so when she pottys it stay in the plastic wrap and would be easy for you to obtain the urine sample. Good Luck, I have 7 children and 13 grandchildren and some times life is funny but it all works out. Love them, hold them, and most of all protect them, they are our future. Good Job Mom.

hi C., I had the same problem with my daughter, she was younger than yours, but what i did was i sat her on the big potty, and gave her juice, and just knelt in front of her, i told her to go ahead and pee in the potty, so as soon as she started going i put the cup there real fast, they only need a little, it worked, she was mad at me for a few minutes, we went for ice cream afterwards and all was forgiven. I put my daughter on Highlands bladder irritation and that help clear her uti. I did not use antibiotics. My nutritionist said to give her one tablet every hour until symptoms go away and then one tablet every two to three hours for an extra day to insure it's gone. They worked great for my daughter. The culture that was taken from the urine sample came back negative, but she clearly had a uti. There was blood on the tissue when she wiped and she would cry and try and hold it. You can get Highlands almost anywhere now. Give her cranberry juice and lots of water.
