OOPS.... I put a few pots and pans in the over the other day, to get them out of the way....most were metal, but there was a cake pan that had a plastic lid on top. Well, needless to say, I forgot all about them being in the oven, and went to cook dinner one night. I returned into the kitchen as we smelled a horrible smell, and the kitchen was covered with smoke. The plastic lid had melted, and now covers the bottom of the oven. You probably guessed by now...I don't cook often!!
My question is...is there a way to get that off, or is the oven ruined? If so, what can I use, or at least try. Its a gas stove, and we are renting the house, so if I don't have to replace it...that would be wonderful, but if I have to, then I guess I have to.

The oven is probably marred, but you can try to heat it up (lower heat) without anything in it and scrape the plastic once it gets soft. I would use a plastic spatula.
I did that once when I had company coming over and it was a whole big roll of plastic wrap... I caught it so it was not horrible but still super messy...I set the oven at 200 - 250 and got it soft and scraped it off with a metal spatula or butter knife would work. I did scrape up the bottom of my oven and I would get the kids out of the house....it smelled. It eventually went away though.
Although I haven't experienced your problem before, I could definitely recommend a good product made by Shaklee called Scour Off. It is an all natural cleaner, non-toxic and safe cleaner that works well on many things including cleaning ovens. One will last you a couple of years! Maybe pair it with a good scouring pad. I've gone through the same thing in my house! We had to cut the melted plastic off the oven racks! The inside if the oven cleaned pretty easily. We had to clean it a few times, but all is well now! Boy, molten plastic makes a mess!
I always told my teenagers NEVER store anything in the oven! Had something break down and had to have a repairman over. Lord forbid someone sees dirty tupperware in the sink! I quicly threw 'em in the oven and wiped the counters. The next day, I almost burnt my house down! Chicken enchiladas did not get cooked that evening! Had to order pizza!
My son said to me, "Mom, you would have been so-o-o pissed at me, had I done this!" Darn it, hate it when they're right!
I would recommend putting the stove on a low setting to warm the plastic and try to peel it off
I would try putting a pan of ice on the plastic and see if that would make the plastic brittle enough that it'll pull away from the oven.
