I have a problem with my son even trying to latch on. When I try to nurse him he moves his head away from my breast and does it till he starts crying and I move him. Hes almost 5 months old and I fear he will never latch on again. When he was a newborn he latched on fine, but was in the nicu for almost 2 months and they wanted me to pump so they could watch his intake, but I still nursed him an hour after his feedings when they wernt around. When he came home he latched on ok a few times then stoped and started doing what I said he did when I started this thread. I breast fed both of my daughters with no problems, and I want to share this with my baby boy too, can anyone give me some kind of advice, please

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I'm still trying, and he still is trying his hardest to turn away from my breast, but I won't give up. I want to thank all the moms for there advice and stories. It helps tp know that I'm not the only one with this problem, and that I still have hope that he just might latch on. Thank you all again very much. I'm new to this site so I don't know how to thank everyone indivulty. I will learn, thank you and have a wonderful new year!!!

Hi Leelynn, my middle child was a 25 week preemie who was fed breastmilk through hisfeedtube, and was supplemented Alimentum in a bottle in addition to nursing. He had some unique challenges nursing my other two didn't have. I DO remember him turning his face away from the breast at first when he finally came home, I WAS able to nurse him in the NICU, but not as much as I'd liked to have.

I had to guess that the bottle was MUCH easier for him (though the other to went from the breast to bottle and back with no issues), and he was muscularly less developed from the feedtube and bottle....

I DID stick with it, it was very upsetting, especially to my husband who was convinced I was starving him to death with my bizarre beast feeding obsession, sigh...

He would go at it like crazy and when he couldn't INSTANTLY latch on, he would get totally pissed off and pulled his head in the other direction...

Obviously you DON'T want him to be malnourished, but if you are determined you CANkeep up the nursing.

I agree completely to call/email the Le Leche League, or your lactation specialist from your hospital, for some tips and some daily cheerleading, tehehe

My son eventually DID latch on effectively and eventually DID go back and forth between breat and bottle, but it was NOT easy! The important thing is Mom is happy and comfortable enough to bond!

Good Luck to you Mama!

I would contact a lactation consultant in your area...they are a lifesaver in these situations. It is hard to asssess the situation without seeing what is going on.

Good luck!

Occupational and speech therapists can help him. The trauma of being in the hospital has stayed with him and he cannot get organized. The mouth is the most organizing place in our bodies so he really needs this or it will lead to many other future problems.
