Hi moms - I need help with some book recommendations for my neices and nephew. I want to get them some books, but I am unsure what the best ones are for their ages - 2 year-old girl, 3.5 year-old boy and 5.5 year-old girl. Does anyone have any books that your children around these ages really love?

Thanks so much!!

my 2 year loves the Little Blessings books about religion. She also loves anything pooh, princess,or disney. Her absolute favorite right now is her potty books. She also likes the books that you have to press the noise buttons on the sides.

ANY of the Olivia books, boys and girls like her. "How Do Dinosaurs...." books. Terrific illustrations, and stories about confidence and manners.

Hi L.!
I teach preschoolers ages 2 and 3. The 2's love Spot books which all have little flaps that they kids can lift up. They enjoy that. There is a series with a dog named Biscuit. Both the 2's and 3's enjoy the Clifford series too. There are wonderful seasonal Christmas books too that would be nice to add to their personal book collections.

If you go up to Barnes and Noble, they should have someone in the children's department who could advise you and then there are the award winning books.. caldecott award winning titles and so forth that are classics too. I believe they have those listings as well. You could also just buy one book and add a gift card and then the kids could go up and pick out what they like. I think it is wonderful that you are sharing the joy of reading with the kids. Books make wonderful gifts!
happy holidays!

I received this recommendation from another mom when I was contemplating what to get my nieces and nephews (5 that range in age from 20 months to 7 years old). I got them each a different Cricket magazine. They have a large selection including one that is like a board book for the youngest. They look fantastic and after ordering them I mentioned it to a friend of mine that is a kindergarten teacher and she said that she thinks they are great as well. I am now hoping someone will think to do the same for my daughter who is 15 months old. You can check them out at http://www.cobblestonepub.com/magazines.html.

Good Luck,
D.

I too would recommend the books that you can press on the side to go along with the story but I would say it might be more for the 2-3.5 year old. As far as the K/1st grader, maybe Dora the Explorer, Hello Kitty, Strawberry Shortcake type books. Maybe just buy them at a store that they can easily exchange (ex. target/kohls). A consultant at Usborne books might be able to help you too... if you would like information, private message me and I can pass along her name to you :)

All of these ages would enjoy just about anything by Eric Carle. He is a favorite author in my house. Most families with that many children probably already have "Very Hungry Caterpillar" and "Brown Bear Brown Bear What do You See"- but there are about a dozen other lesser known books of his that are just as wonderful. My youngest enjoys them for the rythym and flow of the stories and the colorful pictures. My oldest, who is learning all about books (how they are written, the format, etc.) in kindergarten is intrigued with Eric Carle because he is both the author AND the illustrator of his books.
