Blood Work Results - How Long to Wait for Results?

I had blood work done on Monday and was wondering how long it usually takes to get results. I have not had any kind of blood work done that I can remember so I don't know what the normal wait time is. Would you call the doctor's office after a certain amount of time, or do you just wait for them to call you with the results? This waiting game is killing me!! BTW, they did full blood panel plus checking my Thyroid levels. Not sure if that causes them to take longer or not.

What can I do next?

Wait for them to call. You are not the only one to have blood work done and if everyone calls, they will never get anything done. If something is really really wrong, someone would be in touch with you. Sounds like this is routine, so I would not make myself crazy.

Most doctors have a policy of mailing the results of your bloodwork, & only calling if there is something of concern that requires further followup.

If you are concerned about not getting your results back yet, a friendly call to the office receptionist should be able to let you know when & how to expect the results.

Hope everything is WNL (within normal limits) for you! T.

I had initial bloodwork done on July 22 (mon) and had results by Friday. This was a complete work up with about 5 vials of blood.

I had to see specialists this past Monday 9/9 ( 7 vials) and had part if the bloodwork re-done and got results today.

I go to another specialist next week for 2nd opinion on parathyroid .

Best wishes to you!! I know the wait is stressful. I'm looking at surgery at this point. Just waiting to find out.

If you had it taken on Monday the results should be back by now. I usually do mine on Monday and have an appointment to go ever them Wednesday or Thursday, but no later than that. The only thing that takes longer is if it is a culture that has to grow like strep. So, you should be good to call tomorrow.

Give them a call to let them know you had the test, and to be looking for your results.

Timing depends on where you had them done. I work in a doctors' office affiliated with a hospital and urgent care. We have our own lab at the hospital. Generally if our patients have bloodwork done at our facility, the results are available within 12 hours. The information goes directly into the patient's record in the computer. Our doctors get notices about this, but we have thousands of patients so the ones who call and ask for results get them faster. If you use an outside lab, the results take longer to come in, but at least if you call your doctor's office, they can be watching for the results to come in and will call you when they are received.

We get calls from patients looking for their results all the time, and we are happy to help them. Your doctor's office staff should be happy to help you too!

hi,

did you have the draw done at the lab or at the dr's office. if it was done at the lab, they should do the analysis and send a report to the doc's office within 2 business days. if the doc did the draw a the office, they will have to send it to the lab for analysis and then send a report back to the office, usually, that process can take 3-5 business days?? my son had a draw done on sat the 7th at the lab and we had results on monday.

absolutely call to get the results. most docs don't call on normal results, only on abnormal findings. but don't assume no call means all is well...i always call to be sure.

i hope this helps. good luck!! S.

I had a blood draw on Wednesday morning (for a routine physical). I got the test results Thursday afternoon (they are posted online in my 'mychart'). In my experience, the results usually come in within three days.

If there are no urgent issues, a doctor will usually just contact you via mail/email rather than calling you.

It would depend upon the reason for the blood work-up.

If you went in because of an issue you are having and they did blood work in an effort to find causation, then yes, I would think you would have (should have) heard something by now. If it was just a routine annual physical and they drew blood for routine workups, then no... in that case, you will likely only get a card in the mail if the results are normal, and possibly a phone call if something is "off". I would expect a phone call for certain if something was dramatically out of whack, though.

But, if you went in b/c you are concerned about some symptom you are experiencing and they were running tests to figure out what is going on, I would call them tomorrow and find out what the results were.

Offices get swamped, and sometimes blood work results can get filed away without the phone call being made or whatever. Mistakes happen.

So I would follow up myself, with a phone call tomorrow.

My Dr normally calls that day or a day later (same building as lab) I'd give them a call today and see if they have the results. Normally though if everything looks good they don't call
