Is anyone out there on a blood pressure medication that is safe for breast feeding?
I have a 9 months old daughter and I have been on Labetalol since pregnancy and now I have switch doctors and my new doctor wants me to switch medication. Her hand held medication information device listed meds safe for pregnancy but did not list meds safe for breast feeding. I am sure she will look into it further for me, I am just curious what medication others are on and if you have any side effects. lately I am light headed, feel TIRED and have a faster heart rate.

Check with your pharmacist. (Actual pharmacist, not just a tech...sorry any techs out there, I'm sure you know a heck of a lot more then I do!) Pharmacists not only spend years in school learning about drugs and their interactions etc. but they keep up on all the new ones. In FACT there are countless times where Pharmacists have saved lives because someone's doc prescribed a med that would be dangerous to that individual (usually because of drug interactions, but also for other reasons).

If your med ISN'T safe for breast feeding have the pharmacist write a note to your doc. They'll probably put down some safe alternatives.

OPC-3 made by market america is a very potent natural antioxident that has lowered the blood pressure when taken as directed. Mine went down 30 points, as well as blood glucose and cholesetral. it is amazing. look it up at www.marketamerica.com/aaa4u.

I am taking atenolol and the doctor looked it up and found it to be okay. I think they often make the assumption that it is okay for breast feeding when it is safe for pregnancy. When asking about breast feeding specific drugs, doctors and pharmacists don't seem to have as much info. as with pregnancy.

I don't think there are many studies done with drugs and breast feeding. What actually gets into the milk supply isn't as cut and dried as to what goes through our blood stream (pregnancy).

Good luck and I'll keep checking back for more info. being posted, as well.

I am on Labetalol and I am breastfeeding. My baby is 10 wks old. The baby and I both seem fine. :-) I do have to take it twice a day, however, where before pregnancy it was just in the morning. Maybe that would make a difference to you...

Good luck. It's always a trial working w/ meds, especially when we're feeding 2 or more! :-) HUGS

Update since I read Zoe A.'s post: I do remember my pharmasist checking a little book when I picked it up the first time and I told him I was breastfeeding. Huh! I guess they really are looking out for us! :-)
