Best Puberty Books?

The question about the "where do babies come from?" book got me thinking about getting my two kids a book on puberty for them to read and explore this summer. My son will be 10 on June 13th and my daughter will be 8 on July 13th. I'm leaning towards the The Care and Keeping of You, American Girl book for my daughter but would also love anymore suggestions on both. I also am looking at My Body, My Self for Boys: Revised Edition (What's Happening to My Body? ) for my son. I don't want anything too graphic about actual intercourse, mouth sex, anal sex etc that I have seen in some books for young kids. That will be the next step!!! Right now, I'm just looking for some basic info to ease them into what to expect from their bodies in the next couple of years and help me open up the dialogue with them. My husband has already talked to my son about a bunch of stuff - his book can be a little more descriptive than my daughter who will just be turning 8.

thanks!

I've heard many recommendations for the Care and Keeping of You for girls. But I have been meaning to ask the same question with respect to my son. I'll be checking back to see if you get any good recommendations. Good luck!

My daughter has had "The Care & Keeping of You" since she was 7, and she loves it. It explains a lot in there. And it's not graphic or TMI for young girls.

Well per daughters, I have a daughter that is 9.
I have the American Girl books that you mentioned.
I like it. She likes it. It is informative in an age appropriate way and not graphic and can be read with Mom. I recommend it.

Per boys, I don't know off hand. My son is only 5 now. But I'd be interested in books for him too, when he gets to that age.

You asked a good question.
:)

Per girls, from 9-12 years old they are considered "Tweens." Do a Google Search on "Tween Girl Development." And many good articles will come up. That is what I also did.

I have heard from other Moms & Teachers at my daughter's school, that some girls get their periods even at 9-10 years old. So head's up.

I didn't read the other question, but the 'Where Did I Come From?' books have another one out about puberty called, 'What's Happening To Me?'. Not sexual, but covers all the body changes and feelings etc. very good book.

mouth sex?

sorry - that just made me laugh. :)

Good luck in your search. Have you thought about a video (not on the computer) that you and/or hubby make where you talk about the topics you want - then have them watch it?

That way, no one is too traumatized by having a parent in the room watching - but you get to edit the info as you see fit, plus actually get to do the teaching (without traumatizing yourself talking sex with the kids).

I don't have boys, but I do have 3 girls! A co- worker gave me a copy of the care and keeping of you for my (now 12 year old) daughter. BEST BOOK EVER in my opinion! Just the right amount of information and not too graphic. We read through it together and that gave her a chance to ask questions and for me to give her my beliefs, thoughts, etc! Good luck!
