We are making the switch to cloth diapers and I was just wondering what are some of your favorites? I'm totally new to cloth diapering and would love any advice. How and where to store dirty diapers until washing and how to properly wash them. Thanks a bunch!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for the great advice! I was a little overwhelmed with all the choices and different kinds of covers and diapers... so you all helped out. We have just been trying different kinds and then I ended up buying some g-diapers, g-pants a couple of weeks ago to try and they have been wonderful! And super-easy. Instead of the disposable inserts they sell, I've just been using prefolds in the liner and it's been so easy! It is a little extra work with the washing and all, but I can tell it's gonna be worth it in the long run:-)

I LOVE FUZZIBUNZ and THIRSTIES!!!! I have a blog that you can read if you would like to read it and get some info.

As to storing dirty ones, you can use just a trash bin with a lid. As for a regular wash this is the typical wash.
Cold rinse-No detergent
HOT wash with cloth safe detergent (I like rockin green)
If you feel you need an extra rinse go for it! Trust me you'll know if you need one. Oh and if you have any questions, you can always PM me!
As for traveling with a cloth get a wet bag. I LOVE Planet Wise. They make a bag that is PERFECT. It has a section for dry cd's and a section for dirty ones. And its leakproof. LOVE IT! Plus it great for taking when swimming or boating!

Google cloth diaper trial and you then can try some diapers for anywhere from a week to a month. And often times multiple types of diapers to.

We started with BumGenius, and really liked them. Now I'm using Bumkins covers with prefold diapers. Our ds is very skinny (I mean 3rd percentile skinny!) and they aren't working great on him, so I'm going to make my own... At Jillian's Drawers (website with same name), they have a cloth diaper trial program for $10. I wish I found that before my son was born! Looks like a really great program. You get several different types of diapers to try, and then you send back the ones you don't want. We used a wet pail for a while, and I think it deteriorated our diapers. Now we just put them in a diaper pail and wash every other day. I would recommend getting at least 2 dozen to start with. I think 3 dozen is perfect. You'll want a few wet bags waterproof bags) to bring with you when you go out, and 1 or 2 pail liners (waterproof) to use in the diaper pail.
Now, while you're at it, you may want to consider using cloth wipes. I figure we're already washing the diapers, why waste money on wipes at the store? There's lots of recipes to make wipes solution online, and now there's good wipes warmers for cloth wipes you can get at walmart, target, or babie's r us.
It's totally overwhelming at first, but once you start, you'll get addicted, and find yourself seeking out the perfect cloth diaper! It's actually a lot of fun! Congrats on your decision to start using cloth, and if you would like, feel free to pm me. It's always nice to have another cding mama to talk to!

There is so much to learn. If you want there is a great cloth diapering board at babycenter.com that gives loads of valuable information. You've already been given some great advice. With newborns fit is very difficult for some and very easy for others--I have long, skinny babies and got the best newborn fit with flats folded oragami style (search you tube). then I move into fitteds. I thought at first I would like pocket diapers like fuzzinbunz or bumgenious, but I HATE them, I hate stuffing them, I hate the lining of them and my daughter fusses more in them because the insert gets wrinkly. I loved fitteds/prefitteds though. I have thirsties fitteds, bagshotrowbamboo fitteds, short rounds fitteds and primm n proper baby fitteds--all but the thirsties do require either pins or a snappi to close and a cover when you are out and about. I use fleece and wool longies during the winter and thirsties covers the rest of the year (though if going on a long car trip or to babywear during the winter I put a thristies cover on and then longies of some sort). I still use flats with my toddler as well, and I really want to buy some sustainablebabyish fitteds for overnight as I've heard they work really well.
pinstripesandpolkadots.com has some wonderful information on types of diapers, how many you'll need and how and with what to wash.
Detergent really can make a difference as can knowing that with natural fibers you have to "prep" them to make them the most absorbant or you won't be pleased the first few washes. For most fibers this means washing on hot, then drying in the dryer 3-6 times to get rid of naturally occurring oils and "fluff" the fibers so they absorb better...detergent can cause build up if you use detergents with additives and enzymes can break babies out--I use the chart on pinstipes and polkadots to help me find something that works for my kids with sensitive skin--right now we are using Purex free and clear, about a quarter of the recommended amount for a large load when I run full loads about 1.5 table spoons when I run a medium load, my diapers come out clean and fresh smelling.
as for storage, I use a large plastic trash can and stick the wet ones in there, the poopy diapers I dunk in the toilet to get the poop off and then rinse with a sprayer if there is still stuff stuck on them, then drop in the pail with the rest, I wash every 2-3 days. with breastfed baby poop (in a baby that has not started solids) you can just put the dirties in the pail with the wet and it'll rinse out in the wash.
I do a cold rinse, then hot wash/cold rinse and an extra cold rinse (the extra rinse is to make sure you got all the soap out so it doesn't build up in the diapers or irritate your baby's skin)

I loved the Bum Genius, they were my favorite brand...they were adjustable, so they fit for a long time. A great website with a ton of information is www.diaperswappers.com. I got most of my cloth diapers there, for a fraction of the cost. Good luck with cloth diapering!

Congratulations! I also just started on cloth diapers and I L. it. It's definitely a lot more work, but my B. girl has not had any skin irritation or diaper rash since I've switched. I picked up a few at first to see which one I liked before investing in a package of them. Flip System, GroVia and Bum Genius 4.0 were the ones I started with. 5 weeks later and I L. Bum Genius! But, I use Bum Genius mostly at night (since I can add more inserts and I can last through the night without a leak). During the day, I like GroVia --- since I don't have to change the shell with each diaper change like Bum Genius.

I also use Planetwise wet bags to put dirty cloth diapers and throw it all in the wash at the same time. I don't need a pail, since it can hang from a door knob and it holds the smell in. I bought all my items from www.cottonbabies.com

Good luck! Feel free email me if you have any other questions.

There are so many cloth options, it's just overwhelming when you first begin. I went with all pockets at first b/c they seemed the easiest switch from disposables. I've had Happy Heiny, Fuzzi Bunz, and Bum Genius. Each has pros/cons, and I found that each worked best at different times in the baby's growth for me. I wouldn't get married to one and by 24 at first. Test them out and see what you like and don't like. I was scared of prefolds first, but really you can trifold them and plop them in a velcro cover. Easy as pie. Don't discount them too quickly (and they can be really cheap!).

Remember too that no diaper is truly one size. Any diaper that can fit a newborn isn't really going to fit a toddler too. If you can splurge for sized diapers, I'd go for it. The one size will work for 10 lbs to 30, but it will be REALLY bulky at the beginning.

Store in a dry pail. That means no water or detergent/water in the pail. Just the diapers wet or after you've dunked the poop off. A good, waterproof pail liner (Planet Wise is my favorite) keeps the pail clean and can be washed with the diapers.

Washing: There are as many ways to wash diapers as there are people using cloth. I did a cold rinse to get rid of any excess poop on the diapers, longest hottest wash with the normal rinse, then an extra rinse. Use about 1/2 of what the manufacturer recommends for detergent. I used Tide.

I used to sell cloth diapers, so if you want more info or have any particular questions, you can message me. Good luck!

Oh, and I keep a diaper pail in the nursery next to the changing table and one in the bathroom next to the toilet. Easy to dunk and just drop in.

It depends on the baby ;-) But Bum Genius are great. My favorite is the Romp-a-rooz. Expensive, but lovely, great nighttime diaper.

Storage: I have a kitchen garbage can in the baby's room. I have a wet bag. Every night I just throw the diapers into my front load. You have to be very careful with washing cloth diapers and the amount of detergent you use. If you use too much detergent, you will get diaper stink. I do a cold prewash, a hot wash, and then an extra cold rinse.

For the road, you can buy nice little wet bags to throw the diapers in.

Do not use borax, especially if you end up with BG. Also, avoid vinegar! Rock-en-green detergent is amazing. I've tried a bunch of them, all "highly recommended," but Rock'en works! And seriously, start out using barely any detergent and then go from there. Stink really is caused by too much detergent!

We use JSB cloth diapers on our 20 month twin boys and LOVE them. The patterns are so cute, we have had minimal leaks and almost no blowouts, and the customer service is great.

They have a 30 day money back guarantee- meaning you can try cloth diapers with no risk. An individual diaper with two microfiber inserts runs $13- which is a great price. They also have upgrade options with hemp and bamboo inserts. Personally, I like the microfiber inserts the best.

I started CD with my 2nd child about 6 mos ago. I love the Fuzzibunz which are adjustable (snaps) pocket diapers (meaning that they have inserts(pads) that slide in the pocket and wick most of the moisture away from the skin.)

For the dirty diapers, I just bought a medium sized (about knee-high) white plastic garbage pail with a locking lid. It is PERFECT for the job, as it locks any odor inside and locks my curious toddler out. I just keep it next to his changing table.

I wash in cold water without any detergent. Then I wash in hot water with a very small amount of detergent. You can throw them in the dryer, but do not use fabric softener.

I know many moms recommend using Borax, but I haven't found a need to do that yet.

** Added: When I started I got a trial package of SEVERAL different types of diapers from Cute Caboose. You pay something like $100 up front, but you can either keep them all or send them all back and you get all your money back (less a $10 processing fee.) I found it an excellent way to test out the diapers before I bought a ton.
