I'm looking at hiring a friends daughter to babysit for my kids during the summer while I work. I have 2 kids (10 and 7) and it would be for 2-3 days a week for 8 hours during the day. She is 14. What is the going rate for a steady babysitting job these days? I've heard anywhere from $5 to up to $10?? What do you all think?

Since the sitter is 14, I would pay no more than $7-8/hr. The kids are probably self-sufficient at that age so she's just there to keep the peace and make sure they stay out of trouble. I'd prob just give $50/day and she'll think she's made a good chunk. =)

My 16 yr old babysits routinely for 3 families on our street. Her average pay is $12-$15/hour. Last Friday she babysat 3 children for 2 hours and got $50 cash.

She is fortunate.... I don't think everyone pays as much as her regular families. She never set any rates but the "norm" is minimum $10/hr for our neighborhood.

I pay $25 per day for each of my kids (9 months and 2 years) at an in home day care $125 per week per child. They require a lot more attention than you kids will ever need. people usually pay more when it is a few hours in the evening, you can not base yourself off that rate. I babysat in the summers when I was young and I was happy getting $10 per day. I am not suggesting you pay that, but don't over do it. Some people are suggesting you pay more than a college student would make working at a department store.

Id offer her $100 a week. She would probably love it. Your kids are older and dont require much care.

I pay my babysitter $10/hr. I think that is fairly common.
