I am due to have my second baby around Valentine's Day. We don't know what we are having. I have a boy's name picked out but am torn between a couple of girl names. I really like the name Meadow and I like the name Violet. But I can't choose which one!! And I am having a hard time with middle names. Maybe Meadow Violet? Any suggestions would be great!
Thanks

I like Violet! Could there be teasing with Meadow? I have a boy but my pick for a girl was Haley:)

Hi K.....My sister in law and I were pregnant at the same time and she showed me THIS website, using Chinese numerology to determine names....it makes name chosing like a puzzle, determine the lucky combination of letters for each name then start searching for names with that number.....I did that for my first daughter and am still doing it now for my current pregnancy. I must say, my first daughter is having the luckiest childhood of anyone I've ever known! Good luck! http://www.chinesefortunecalendar.com/BabyName.htm

I prefer Violet by far, as it is an old-fashioned name, rather than part of today's culture of naming kids wierd things like "apple".

I will say that my kids both match their names very well. As you get close, it becomes easier to decide, and seeing them definitely can help on a split decision.

A big part of my decision process was the name-calling factor. I didn't want my kid's name to have an obvious name-calling reference. In my case, I was Lizzy the...lizard, lesbian, etc. I gave them each a traditional name and a newer-style name. Riley Thomas for my son, and Emily Brooke for my daughter. That way if they don't like their first name, they can use their middle name.

There is also a concept that says the number of syllables in the first/middle names in relation to the last name will make an impact. I can't remember the formula/recipe, but it was like if the last name has 3 syllables, the first name shouldn't have X number of syllables. Sounds wacky, but in the book they showed examples and it made a lot of sense.

The psychology of names was something around when my daughter was born in 1991 - here's a website with some helpful ideas...
http://www.kaaj.com/psych/namebk.html
For example - in my son's class there is a "Lucky" - that is his real name. I can only imagine how this will impact his future, all the jokes at his expense, etc. I've heard of a girl named "Candy" - not Candace but actually "Candy" Can you see a girl named Candy as the head of a large corporation? I can't.

I like Violet. I think that with Meadow she may be teased later on, so I wouldn't pair Meadow with Violet. What is your daughter's name? Maybe try to find something that will compliment that name?
Good luck, I know how hard finding the perfect name can be.

K. ~ MEADOW! Of the two, Meadow is the calmer - very earthy and peaceful. This might sound a little silly, but, Violet can be twisted into Violent - the complete opposite of what you want for your little girl. My little brother's middle name was Garber (a family surname) and the kids used to call him "Garbage". Also, a friend of mine was thinking of naming her boy Adam, but the last name is Barnes, and she felt it was too close to "Adam Bombs". Kids can be insensitive sometimes and they will twist other kid's names just to be funny. I'm sure you don't want that to happen to your little girl. Meadow is more unique anyway and perhaps you can use a more traditional middle name (something from the family tree maybe). Good luck! I'm sure whatever you choose, it will be perfectly lovely. ~ K.

Meadow Violet is very cute, just don't do it the other way around because Violet Meadow sounds silly I think. My husband & I went round & round with names for our first until finally we agreed on a boys name Michael Theodore, (Michael after my father & Theodore is my husband's middle name) and Hailey Ann for a girl (Hailey just because we liked it & Ann was my grandmother's middle name). We had Michael first & when we found out our 2nd was a girl, we just stuck with the original so we didn't have to fight any more about it. Hailey was born February 27th & in New Jersey it was really icy & yucky. Hopefully you'll have better luck with the weather on your way to the hospital!!! Good luck with everything, hope your last couple of months fly by!

Congrats, K.. Meadow Violet sounds very unique and pretty. I'd go with it. Both my children were named after their grandparents. When I was pregnant with my daughter, I couldn't decide either, so I chose Patricia Madeline for a girl and William Frederick for a boy. It just so happened that my first child is a girl and my second is a boy. When I was pregnant with my son and before I new he was a boy, I couldn't decide on a name for a girl. I've always loved the name Anastasia and Samantha. I chose the original Hebrew pronunciation of Anastasia and then my first name E. for a Middle name. Good Luck in whatever you choose. When you hold your darling child for the first time, he or she will tell you what they want to be named.

I think that Meadow is unique.. I don't think Meadow Violet flows.. You might change your mind a couple more times before she is born. My husband and I were unsure of a few girl names and we had a to think about it for about 8 months at least until we both knew the right name--and it just clicked with us--so we now have Tori Madison which we love--formal name Victoria. I'm a teacher so I could see where she could get picked on with the name Violet if it is chosen as a first name. My doctor told me that teachers have the hardest time choosing names--you'll know when the time is right--good luck and let us know what you pick!

From a school teacher...make sure the name is different but not so different that it could cause teasing. Also be sure it is easy to spell or say. I like Violet for the middle name
(my grandmother's name and she was a sweet, loving woman). It is wise to steer away from popular names.
I am too a 53 yr.old hippie at heart, still wear guaze, tyedye, birkenstocks, and watch Woodstock! I have a peace symbol wreath on my house! I also love Dave Matthews. But remember your daughter is growing up in a different era, and her name will be forever...think about her as a teen and adult when you choose the name. Just FYI's. W.

I would definitely go with Violet. It has a nice ring to it. While at the time you may think Meadow is a fabulous name, she may get teased when she is older. I have a friend named Treasure and she hated it so much that for a long time she went by her middle name. hope that helps! Good luck.

Hi - Not sure what your last name is but that will come into play for creating names as well. I own a marketing firm and being creative is my forte. If you like Meadow and Violet - you could name your baby "Violet Meadow" as in a beautiful field of color. Or you could play on the color only and name it "Violet Indigo"... or "Viola Bloom"; "Violeta Heath" [another name for meadow]; "Violet Veldt" [also another name for meadow] or switch them around "Veldt Meadow" [pretty cool!] or Veldt Violeta . I think the more creative you are in naming your baby the better. Then she won't end up having a zillion other kids with the same name in school. All the best!

HI K.,
Wow! I love both of those names and the fact that they connect your child to our natural environment. Its so funny for me to come home to this request because... NO B.S... I was thinking this morning about girls names on my drive to work. I am not pregnant and probably won't be so it was completely random, but I decided that a great name for a girl is VIOLET. I have no idea why I was even thinking about it because I had not read your request, isn't that strange? Anyway, I think Violet Meadow is beautiful, and the image the name evokes is breathtaking and so peaceful. Good luck with your search...

Dear K.,

Unfortunately, I have found that no matter what you name your child, many end up hating the name(s) that you labored over for months on end. My second son didn't like his given name at all. So, as an up and coming first grader, he changed it. He told me of his intention and I thought - it's his name, he has to live with it every day, why not. He went on to tell his teacher and all of his friends. Seven years later, the name he picked has stuck. It fits him well.

Of the 2, I like Violet. She has a spot on the ABC TV show Private Practice. Seems to be on the rise. That's the hard part in naming a new little person, not becoming a part of a trend. I have a cousin, Madison. Her mother thought that this would be the most unique, cool, wonderful name-21 years ago. Then an entire generation of kids right after her had mother's who thought the same thing. Who knew?

Best of luck to you!
T.

From a baby name book, you may have seen this:

IS V THE NEW Z?
11/20/2007
We're noticing a lot of V's -- as in vivacious and vibrant -- popping up in cool names these days. There's Ever, the name of model/designer Milla Jovovich's new baby. Olive, of course, along with hotties Olivia, Ava, and Eva. Other rising stars (and starbabies) include Savannah, Evan, and Violet. Many names that start with V have been out so long they're starting to come in again: Veronica, Virginia, Valentina, Victor, and Vincent, which definitely took on a new sexy glow thanks to Entourage's leading man Vincent Chace and real life leading man Vince Vaughn. Like Z, X, and O before it, V seems to be the cool name letter of the moment.

We had a very difficult time with a girls name. We finally settled on Sky Natalie. I am also a little hippie at heart and wanted something nature/earthy. I also hope her name inspires her to be environmentally friendly. We also have a 2 year old boy name Aiden and really like the sound of "Aiden and Sky". Meadow is also a beautiful name and we considered it. How about Hazel Meadow?

Hey K.,
Congrats! I love both names and as a mama of 2 boys I thought the name game is the hardest part!! Birthing comes naturally no drugs needed! I think you should choose Violet and Crimson for the middle name. I know essentially they are both color, but I think Meadow is very cool but it shouldn't be paired with violet. Perhaps Meadow Crimson....oooooh I like that a lot lot!!! Violet Crimson is my vote! I recently had a baby and in my birthing from within class woman's life partner's name was Crimson and I LOVE that! Meadow Crimson is my bet. Just a thought.

PS Where do you live b/c it sounds like you and my friends have a lot in common. We live in Baltimore Hampden area. Be Our FRIEND!!!!

i love the name meadow! anything unique is my taste. when my husband and i were coming up with names we both hated the thought of him one day going to school and having 4 other boys in his class with the same name. and we also made a promise to each other that we both had power of veto. we could suggest any name we wanted but the other person could throw it out. we wanted to equally love it. or son's first name was my idea (which he loved) so i let him pick out the middle name (as long as i liked it). so what does your husband think? maybe he would like having some ownership in your daughter's name. oh, and by the way, you guys sound just like my husband and i! young at heart, silly and hippie-like. that is us!

Personally I like the name Violet the best out of those two. I would pick something simple for a middle name. Maybe Violet Rose, Violet Marie, Violet Lily something like that.

I am sure whatever you pick will be beautiful. I would love to know what you decide.
