I was just curios to know if anybody else's child likes to switch lights off and on? Or my favorite when I'm in a hurry...undo shoe laces from shoes :) or takes toys apart instead of putting the together?
My daughter is 6 also nonverbal and yes she loves to remove her shoes and socks as well. Does your child walk on tip toes? She also loves to run down the hallway and she is sooooo curious we have had to put safety locks on all the doors in the house :)
Sounds very much like normal toddler behavior to me. I'm not sure how old your child is, but if he's one or two, I'd say totally normal. The shoelaces and toys would also seem common to me in a preschooler (or, if not common, at least not unusual). I would say by age 3 the fascination with the lights is usually gone.
My two year old daughter will push her stool all around the downstairs of the house to turn lights on and off.
My son who is 6 and autistic still has a fascination with turning lights on and off but luckily we've mostly moved onto other 'typical' kids-like-me behaviors such as removing his socks and shoes a dozen times before we're out the door for school. My son also wants to know how everything works(we think?, he's nonverbal and has never actually let us know why)and takes things apart like crazy. Needless to say we've learned that certain things cannot be outside of our own pockets lest he will find a way to break it. Children are curious little people and in my opinion autistic children can be the most curious.
Funny... my daughter, who is also autistic, did the light thing this morning (never did before)
Oh yeah first thing she does is remove her socks, then her clothes. We live in MI, it is cold, and the kid prances around in her underwear.
Mine is also 6.
My son who is not autistic used to love to turn lights on and off when he was a toddler. And he used to LOVE to take toys apart when he was about age 3-4. He had a drum set that he would take completely apart so often we lost many small parts and eventually had to just toss it. He is 8 now and is super sad about ruining that drum set when he was smaller.
A good friend of mine has an autistic child and she did the light switch thing for a good while. You're not alone! :) She's 11 now and hasn't done it in years....
oh yes! shuts every door in the house. takes shoes and socks off all the time. licks carpets, windows, floors, the dog! LOL its a huge sensory issue for her. i let her do these things for a bit then i have to redirect her.
Not what you mentioned but yes. my son takes toys apart to the point that they can't be played with any more. . He loves bubble wrap but then shreds it when hes done popping it. Also likes shredding any kind of paper or cardboard. The shredding is all sensory problems. Likes to put quarters, nickels, dimes and pennies in the vents. He did a lot of stalling when it was time to get out the door in the morning especially for the school bus. Then we would get out there and he would plop his butt down and not get up. I had to physically wrap my arms around him from behind and walk him to the bus. Now he likes to take clean clothes and throw them in the basement.
