At What Age Should You Stop the Bottle

My daughter is 14 months and I'm wondering at what age other moms have stopped giving their baby a bottle. She has a bottle of milk in the morning and one at night. I must say she is not a big 'bottle' baby and I don't think she would miss it. She does well with sippy cups.
Any thoughts and advice would be great!

I stopped with both of my kids on their first birthdays. They didn't miss it and at night before they would go to bed I would give them a sippy cup with some milk. I never let them go to the crib with anything to drink.

We got rid of the bottle on her first birthday. She helped us put them in a bag and we took them out to the garbage cans outside. She then got to pick some sippys (we had a bunch at the house already). We did the same thing at 2 with the sippys to "big girl" cups. She really didnt seem to mind. Good luck!

As others have said, we dumped the bottle at 1 year. If she's not attached the transition should be easy. Good luck!

I would say take it away now - if it isn't an issue then it should be easy to get rid of. Tell her that she is a big girl now and have her help you throw them away.

If she's doing well with a sippy cup, I'd stop giving her a bottle now. It sounds like she doesn't need it anyway. Good for her!

My personal thought is that the bottle should stop when formula stops. Bottles are designed to mimmic a breast, right? So they should be used to deliver the stuff of breasts (or synthetic stuff at least). My son gave his bottle up easily at 1 when he decided he prefered cows milk, juice or water to formula, all of which were available only in a cup.

Good luck with this. Do what feels comfortable for you and your family, but if my experience and observation is that the longer it goes the harder it is.

We stopped my son's bottle at 13 months. The recommended age is 1 yr (at least per our doctor). If she isn't attached to it, it should be an easy transition for you. Better to take it away now than one she is older and more stubborn. We just replaced the nighttime bottle with a cup of sippy milk for about a month and it was much easier than we anticipated. We never gave my daughter bottles at all, so I never had to take it away. Now if I had only taken the pacifier away sooner!

Hi W.,

I stopped the bottle at 12.5 months. If I were you I'd take it away now. If she is not dependent on it, it's easier to take away. Just give her only sippy cups and she should be fine. If you wait much longer, it will be a lot harder. My sister is still trying to take the bottle from my niece at 2, and is having a very hard time.

Take care!
D.

one year. That's what we did. In my opinion it was perfect. Night time was the hardest, but we got through it by substituting water and then getting rid of the bottle alltogether. It was great b/c if we had waited until they were two or even later, it would have been much much harder to break the habit.

Hi W.,
We stopped the bottle at 1 yr. It sounds like you will have no problems as your daughter like her sippy cup. If you want to do it gradually, try eliminating the bedtime bottle first. If she is drinking milk right before going to bed, try buying a special sippy cup for bedtime only and putting water in it. Make sure you brush her teeth well before bed and only give her water after that to lower the risk of cavities.
Sincerely,
L.
