I am in the process of applying and I am starting to read a lot of bad reviews out there but I'm not sure what to think. Do any of you moms have any knowledge or experience with this? I have applied to Leapforce Appen and another company. Have been contacted by Appen, went through initial questionaires and tests, they say they will be sending me a welcome email within seven days. I want to be able to work from home and make my own hours. Not sure what kind of work or actually is and how well it pays and how consistent. I would happy with btw 10-20 hrs wk.

I appreciate your input. May I request that future responses be limited to those with actual knowledge or experience with Appen. Thank you!
The company is rated A+ by the BBB and no complaints reported. I have friends that are mothers working from home so when I get these responses back that the concept of working from home is some kind of myth or urban legend and simply does not exist, I know you are wrong. I understand there are real scams out there which is why I am doing my research, but also not every opportunity is a scam either.
I am not new to this site. Just haven't been on in a while. I don't think I will be using it again. Could do without insults and condescension.. Gamma you basically called me stupid "I'm smart enough to know this type of thing doesn't exist". Which is actually a very stupid sounding comment. Thanks anyway girls! Bye!

No clue but it sounds fishy to me. No one is going to pay you to stay home with children and work.

MANY companies like this are scams. One of the first red flags is if you have to pay then ANYTHING... PLUS, you are already reading bad reviews. Why on earth would you pursue something that already has bad reviews and you know nothing about it unless you just feel a need to be scammed?

Be very careful and contact Better Business Bureau

Yes, you can request future responses to be whatever you want but you asked a question and the moms here are trying to help YOU not get scammed. Good Day!

ETA:1 Per your SWH, no one called you stupid. However, someone is really blowing some smoke up your pants if you think you can make a fortune working at home. IF we are wrong, they why is it that the moms on MMP have the same basic attitude about work at home schemes? If it were true, everyone would work from home and get paid to be home all day. Stop dreaming....

True, "some" places are legit... very few are legit. People who work from home have earned that right by demonstrating self motivation and self discipline to a company or own their own company and work from home 24/7 (that's me).

I can't believe how some people fall victim to these too good to be true scams. Go ahead and sign up... maybe you will find your pot of gold, LOL

My first inclination when I read your post was that YOU were recruiting for some sort of work from home scheme.

ETA2: I suspect a flounce so here you go....

I'm sorry. I have no personal information or experience with Appen.

Working from home is WORKING. They aren't going to pay you to take care of your kids. So if it sounds too good to be true?? It might just be.

I work from home. I have for almost 9 years. I worked hard to get here. It's not all it's cracked up to be. People who do NOT work from home have unrealistic expectations or notions about what you can and can't do from home...I don't know how flexible they are. I don't know if their fees are the same for each project. I don't know how often you'd get a project...there are a lot of unknowns!!

Here's what I do know:

Leapforce is a search engine/research company.

Appen is a Linguist company that uses people's talents for language to help translate.

Together what do they do? I don't know.

I did some quick research...this is what I found. I have NOT checked the BBB for Virginia.

I know nothing about these companies. Have never heard of them.

I would be very suspicious of anything like this. Can't imagine applying for a job with a company I knew nothing about. How can you be sure this is right for you if you don't even know what you'd be doing?

Don't know if you are new to mamapedia, but this question, or some related variation, gets asked routinely. Get ready to be skewered regarding working at home, setting your own hours, etc.

Bottom line to save you time reading all of the responses that are about to follow: there is no magic work-from-home-with-the-world's-best-flexible-hours kind of job. Not any worth your time, anyway.

A little googling seems to leave me with more questions than answers for you. Usually a company gives you some basic information like what the job actually is, what you will be doing, who you will be working for, and how you get paid. Appen doesn't seem to provide that basic info which would lead me to believe that either they don't have any real work that they set up for you or they give you a list of possible companies who have used their services in the past and its up to you to track down your own work. It may totally be legit but without the basic info its kind of up in the air as to whether you will get paid for the time you put in and since I'm sure you aren't going to work for the fun of it I'd make sure your time is paid for and paid well.

You can check with the Better Business Bureau. You could ask the company to talk with employees and/or companies that hire them. I am guessing you've already google them because you've found reviews.

You did ask for those with experience to reply. But you didn't give us enough information so that we'd know you had already done enough research to know the basics of how to get information. If there is a next time just say you've done the research and are now looking for personal experiences with this one company.

You did get some rude responses. I don't understand why. I do know that this site has questions about work at home jobs and apparently this is a hot button topic. Your post does sound like you don't have any awareness of what the job entails or what the wages are; hence posts with information you don't want.

Perhaps you aren't aware that members like to give advice. Often we answer more than we need to to answer the question. Usually mmembers just ignore what is not helpful to them. No need to take it personally. Members are going to have opinions which may not be helpful.

You said one member implied that she thought you were stupid. I suggest that you heard one thing when she may have meant something else. It is difficult to know what the posters meant when you only have the written word. We understand better when we have visual, verbal and posture clues.

We all decide how we respond to anything, written or actual experiences. Apparently you chose to take offense. Why? What strangers think and write should be of little importance to you. Why do you even care strongly enough to flounce, to let us know how stronly you feel enough that you have to leave the site. In reality most of us don't care that you're leaving.

Yes some of the responses felt personal. However you can choose to be upset or not. A phrase I learned in counseling is "would you rather be right or would you prefer being happy?" I feel sad that you give so much power to strangers.

I looked up reviews for Appen. The Appen site had 3 positive views and one negative. I see that the job is described and reasons for and against working there is summarized as well as information about wages. Looked helpful to me. You do know it's legitimate because they are listed at the BBB. If in doubt call and ask them what is the criteria for a listing.

I suggest that your question requiring only those with experience with Appen to answer could be offensive to others. Many members have had negative experiences with stay at home opportunities. I know that there are legitimate opportunities because of my experience. You know too. So don't listen to the negative posters. What a waste of energy and emotion over what strangers say.

I hope this job will work for you. There are very few work at home opportunities.

Interesting, I think you worded the subject incorrectly. Should have went with, "Tell me Appen crowdsourcing work from home is legit", because clearly you didn't want anyone to say it was a scam.

There are plenty of work from home jobs that are legit, they just tend not to be what people expect. People think they can work from home and earn the same wages as they would get in an office environment. Doesn't happen, you are asking for a benefit that has a monetary value that is deducted from your wage.

Most only pay you slightly above minimum and only for the time logged into the system and active. People get the idea they can multi task thinking these companies can't tell if they are making a snack or doing laundry. They know people do this, they have algorithms built in that alert them if you are idle too long. They track idle time. They electronically micromanage you.

So yeah, One is right, if they ask for money up front they are a scam. Others are right that if you think you can work and watch your kids or do your housework, cook dinner, they will not let you do that. In short, it is not what you think it is going to be.

Your what happened truly shows how ignorant you are.
_____________
I stand corrected, your answer to that other question shows how ignorant you are.

We get this sort of question every few days and we get tired of explaining exactly what I said. If it was a real job we'd all be doing it.

I got a $50 deposit the other day. I use my child support entirely for our grocery budget. This dad...I can bank on him. He sends the money even if he's out of a job. He's dependable and usually has it taken out of his paycheck and his company pays it every Friday. So I, for 8 years have received a deposit every Tuesday or Wednesday.

Since Thanksgiving we haven't received very much. I let him know that it was missed and he hasn't lost his job and the office people are the same nor has he changed jobs. So they are paying his child support but the state is somehow messing it up.

It's our only food money. I went to Walmart and was walking around and around trying to figure the hell out how I was going to buy enough groceries to feed our family on that much money when it should have been much more.

I was fricking crying in the store because I'm tired of going hungry, of not having money for enough food. So I was feeling very sorry for myself. The kids eat first in my home. They have no idea we aren't rolling in dough. They don't know we have zero money til February and aren't expecting any to come in.

My husband gets disability and he's been near death several times since May. His heart is so bad they can't do surgery. I can't go to work because of my own health plus I need to be home to take care of him.

If jobs like this were real we'd know. We'd give our friends heads up and tell them all about it so they could reap the benefits too.

My life is stressful and hard and I'm really hungry so don't you say I called you stupid.

I guarantee if I'd have called you stupid it would have been "You are so stupid to think real jobs where they don't tell you anything are real".

I didn't say that. I said we all know we can get sucked in by promises and they might come through for a while but if you do decide to go ahead with this don't spend any money. Don't give them anything you don't have to give way for free. If they say you have to buy paper for the printer to do something use what you're willing to give away. If they say you need to buy a kit or spend any money on having something mailed to you for the job, don't do it.

You can't say "I only want answers I like, that say things about this particular business". We are never going to investigate companies like that so your question is useless here. We don't have answers that say it's a good company and I work for them or anyone that will say they are horrible don't do it. Because NONE OF US would ever fall for a scam that this probably is.

By asking a question you set yourself up to hear our answers. You won't like some and you'll find some helpful. You asked and we answered.

I'm sorry you don't like my answer. If you want more just like it from almost every mom on this board use the search bar on the top and put work at home in the box. You'll find page after page after page of the same thing.

We get this question about 2-3 times per week. These jobs aren't real. If they were we'd all know about them because anyone that worked there would be singing their praises.

*****************************

There won't be any replies then. We are all smart enough to know that these sorts of companies don't really exist.

Think about it. If they were real wouldn't we all be doing it? Wouldn't all stay at home moms be earning their own income and all families not stressing about high costs of food and stuff?

This sort of thing just isn't safe. I know one lady who worked at an online job that she found. They paid her for the first few weeks. By then she felt safe with them. She worked and worked and worked many hours doing all the work they'd give her to do.

They stopped paying her but kept telling her the checks were on their way. That she just needed to be patient. She lost everything. She found out later, through the DA, that this company was a sham, a front from some sort of scam.

Please don't trust them. Take the work they give you but do not spend a single dine on it. Don't give them anything you aren't willing to do for free because it's entirely possible that you will be giving it away for free at some point.

I work from home for Nordstrom. I found this gig through www.workplacelikehome.com. There are plenty of positions out there for you. Working 10-20 hours per week is completely doable. Why not check out www.iSoftStone.com. This is a company that needs folks to transcribe audio, often times from Indian and Chinese individuals. You are paid once per month, and it is reliable. Not too terribly stimulating, but this might be a resource for you.

Julie? What business do you have slinging accusations of ignorance around on this board? We are, most of us anyhow, moms rooting for each other in this crazy game of raising children, keeping a house and making a few bucks in the process. Have you ever heard the phrase - "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all"?

This applies to you.

To anyone else who is looking for some reliable, legitimate at-home opportunities at home - check out www.workplacelikehome.com.
