Anyone Used the G Diapers Showed on the Early Show This Morning??

I saw the G diapers on the early show, looked them up online, and they look really great. Has anybody actually used them? Do they work? Are they worth the more than double price compared to disposables?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Wow, so many differing opinions! As this is my 6th child, we are already overwhelmed with laundry...there is always something in each machine. I cannot imagine using cloth diapers and adding to the laundry issue. The g diapers are $52 for something like 120 inserts...I pay $20 for 108 disposables, so I'm just not sure how they would be even remotely affordable, in comparison to disposable. I love the idea of both cloth and g diapers, but I think for now we're going to stick with disposables. Too bad the g diapers have to be so pricey. But I guess everything that is good for the environment is. Thanks so much for all of your replies.

I tried them, but my son leaked through everything for a while and I didn't have the patience to keep trying. MY girlfriend LOVES them. I think it is cheaper if you aren't too picky about the colors and you order the starter kit to bulk up on the washable parts. Good luck, I admire the G diaper!

I had considered going to the G diaper and had posted here asking about it. After reading the posts and doing A LOT of research, I ended up going full on cloth. Not only is it cheaper (when you calculate the cost over the amount of time used), it is SO easy. I tried a variety of types (prefolds, fitteds, pockets, all in ones), and I now use the Bum Genius 3.0 pocket diapers almost all the time. They are great. The only downside is that they aren't quite as trim as a disposable - my girl has chunky thighs, so in between the diaper and her thighs, putting jeans on her require a wire hanger :)

There is a lot of information out there if you want to check out cloth diapering - almost so much it can be overwhelming. One of my favorite sites is moderndiapers.com. Lillian is the owner and she is fab - so willing to help with questions. She has a good variety in her store, but is still too small to offer a trial.

If you're interested in trying out cloth, check out jilliansdrawers.com - they have a 21 day diaper trial for $10. You give them a deposit, they send you the diapers, you send back what you don't like and pay for the rest. You should also check out diaperdecisions.com. They organize something called the great cloth diaper hunt twice a year (GCDH) and they have a huge list of sites that participate. Most of them are very willing to help.
People tend to think that cloth diapering is crazy - it's so much easier than you might think. If you have more than one kid in diapers, you will save a ton, and options like the Bum Genius 3.0 are a one size diaper, so kids from 6-35 lbs can wear them. They also function very much like a disposable - but cuter! I use them all the time, even when we're out for the day.

This is NOT the cloth diapering from when we were kids!

I use Gdiapers for traveling *IF* there isnt washing facilites. Other than that I prefer good old cloth! I use Mother-ease one size diapers and bum genius one size. Saves money being one size so you dont have to keep replacing your diapers when they outgrow them. And mother-ease are virtually indestructable!

I used g diaper inserts in the wool covers that i already had from cloth diapering. It was fantastic. The inserts stayed where they were supposed to be, we doubled at night and composted all the non- poopy ones. The g diaper covers never worked for either the cloth or g diapers. Wool covers are wonderful.

good luck

I have used disposables, g diapers, and all-in-one cloth diapers. G Diapers were a great concept but didn't work.

- they bunch up and crinkle - for girls, imagine having a WET WEDGY in the front! ugh!
- they don't contain the pee or poop very well, especially with boys, they leak pee even if you double them up
- they really are MORE work than cloth diapers....

Just think: you have a piece of cloth that you already have to wash and dry, and you'll need many of them. Then you add to that this process of putting in liners, snapping them into covers, and the reverse once the diaper is used. Then if you really want to flush the liners, that is a yuck process that is too much effort, in my opinion. So they end up in the garbage. It's like doing cloth and disposable diapers at the same time!

I use bumGenius 2.0 all-in-ones & their bamboo diapers with covers, and I'm in love. It's almost as easy as disposable, and it's less work than the G Diaper. And, they NEVER leak.

I used them with my son and loved them. I used combo or G diapers and disposable, so if someone was babysitting that had the option of the easier disposable. I like the concept of G diapers, pro environment and the fact that poopy belongs in the toilet. I didn't have a stinky diaper pail or garbage. I didn't have the problems the other folks were talking about, it did take a little while to get used to them though. Especially getting the hang of flushing the insert without clogging the toilet. I know of other people who had that problem but if you follow the directions it works fine. It was only when I was being lazy and didn't do it right that my toilet clogged. Now I have a newborn daughter and I plan to try them again once she gets a little older. Hope that helps!!

I too tried g diapers because I in my heart of hearts wanted to do cloth but my life style just didn't allow for it. So I bought wayyyy too many g diapers having already decided to make the switch before trying them.

Not good.

I LOVED the little cloth velcro underpants they came with but the "diaper inserts" never worked. They slid, they leaked, and the bunched, and he looked like he was wearing 4 diapers. I read and reread the directions, switched sizes, and finally gave up. And yet still, when I pass them in Whole Foods, I want to try again because I LOVE the concept. But it just wasn't for us.

However, I loved the little undies...used them as bathing suits or as the alternative to the stark "nudie" hour my son insists on before bed.

I use them at home during the day. I bought the starter pack at Babies R Us and they work well. I have not been brave enough to use them overnight though. It is a little extra work and the snap-in liners do get poop on them if the poop is not solid, but since most kids only poop once a day, it's not a big deal to switch out the liner for a new one if this happens. I wash the liners in the sink (let them soak for a little while in some laundry detergent) and let them air dry or throw them in the laundry. They clean easily. The covers are really cute, they work well and don't get wet if used correctly. (I only had a leak once or twice in the past 3 months since I have started using them. I have also heard that you can put cloth diapers in the covers if you decide to transition to cloth. And I love that there are no dirty diapers stinking up my garbage can.
They are a bit pricey, but I found that you can order them through Amazon.com in the subscribe and save program. I love subscribe and save and use it to order everything from toilet paper to shampoo. You get 15% off their price, which is already lower than other places, and free shipping and you decide how many cases you receive at a time, and how often they ship. Then they send you an email reminding you that it is going to ship that day. You can log in and change the day or skip the shipment if you need to.
As long as you follow the directions provided you should be fine. They also have a good instructional video on their website on how to use them and how to flush the refills. It is kind of gross to tear them up when there is poop, but it's gross no matter what when they poop, and even when I use disposables I flush the poop, so it really isn't much different. The only thing is if you have a toilet that is easily clogged I would skip them. But otherwise, I really like them.

I have used them on my daughter for about a year. We haven't had any problems with them, but my husband can't do the poopy ones, because it doesn't stay on the diaper. But we compost the wet ones and either flush or toss the poopy ones. If we are traveling, I'll used regular diapers, just so I don't have to carry around a dirty diaper. Hope that helps and good luck!

For most of my pregnancy, I was totally sold on the G diapers concept. But, then I compared prices and the amount of work already involved with the G diapers (tearing the insert apart for the toilet, washing the cover) and I figured I would consider regular cloth. After tons of research, I ended up buying Bumgenius 3.0 diapers. It saves a ton of money because the diaper adjusts in size as my son grows. With G diapers, you have to buy the different sizes as your child grows. Plus, I figured if I have to wash G diaper covers, then it's not really a big deal doing a load of cloth diapers every other day instead. Also, it's easier for me to throw the diaper in the pail vs having to run to the bathroom and take care of the insert while my son is on the changing table. I already have a hard enough time trying to get the 30 seconds to wash my hands after every diaper change. I guess it also depends on how old your child is. Those are just my thoughts.
If you check out amazon.com, they have some reviews of people that have used g diapers. Good luck!

I hated them! :( I was sooo excited about them, but they are pretty awful. Especially for boys, because there is no extra padding in the front. The inserts get all rumpled up, and the pee leaks. I won't even go into the poop! I ended up having to wash the covers every single time, or they smelled. It got expensive, so I switched to cloth.

Bumgenius All-In-Ones are so much easier and cheaper!

I haven't tried them but I agree with the other responses re: cloth diapers. I tried several types and like the bum genius pocket diapers best. I throw them in the washer every night and run a rinse and full wash cycle before hanging them to dry--takes an extra 10 minutes every day but it's worthwhile. I definately notice that my daugher gets diaper rash with the disposables. It goes away as soon as I go back to the cloth diapers. The pocket diapers need to be changed a little more frequently than disposables but it really isn't too much more work. I take my daughter to work with me and use the pocket diapers everyday. I have a waterproof bag for the dirty ones and just dump out the diapers and throw the bag in the wash too. Sometimes it is a little bit gross pulling the insert out of the pocket diaper but it's not too bad.

I really wanted to like the G diapers, but as others have said, they leaked terribly. After 5 months of disposables (7th Generation), I switched to cloth diapers. I prefer the Bum Genius 2.0 all-in-one's, because you don't have to stuff any inserts into them, but I also use the BG 3.0's overnight with extra inserts and rarely have any leaks. I wish I had used cloth with my first child -- it would have made the cost savings even greater!

I didn't switch to cloth earlier because I was so overwhelmed by the different options and choices. Finally, a friend told me about a free workshop that's offered to help de-mystify the world of cloth diapers. If you're anywhere in CT, I recommend the trip to West Hartford on a Saturday (click on "events calendar"): http://www.papayapatch.com/
I'd definitely encourage you to consider cloth diapers if you're interested in the G diapers. I'm very happy I switched to cloth, both for my son and the environment. :)

i use them and i love them! i think they end up being about 4cents more than regular diapers, but you feel like you're doing a little bit to help the environment. they work really well. we even used them through the beginning breast milk poop stage. my daughter is 8 months old and they feel wet so she wants her diaper changed soon after it gets wet. I'm hoping it will make potty training easier. We also don't get diaper rash when we use the gdaipers. The few times we have run out or were travelling and using disposable diapers, she got diaper rash almost immediately. I LOVE THEM!!! good luck!~
