San Tan Pediatric Dental - Dr. Stephen Montoya is the dentist my children go to. He seems super sweet and is nice to the kids, I just have some reservations to his practice. I use to see (the best Pediatric dds out there) a dentist named Brett Quackenbush, but my insurance no longer covers him, so I am going to Dr. Stephen Montoya out in Queen Creek. I had been going to Dr. Quackenbust for 1 1/2 years with all 5 kids and have had NO cavities during that whole time. That was 6 months ago. Now that the insurance has changed I have gone to Dr. Montoya and he is saying that one of my kids is needing a pulpotomy and crown as well as 3 other cavities. Another child has 5 (YES 5) cavities and another has 2. GRRR. I am just wondering if you know of his honesty, I just don't want to be taken advantage of and ruin my childrens teeth. Please let me know, there appointments are next week. Thank you so much for your response.

I take my kids to Little Tykes in Gilbert. I completely trust him to help me decide what is best for my child. The office is kid friendly and my kids that are extremely apprehensive at the dentist did a great job at his office. Dr. Carmichael ###-###-####.

Hello,
I to live in QC but never changed my kids doc or dentist. I dont know anything about this dentist but we do go to a wonderful one. Dr. Ball in Gilbert/mesa. My son just went yesterday (he is 16) 6 months before Dr Ball said he had a cavity but to wait on it. He went back yesterday and Dr Ball said that the cavity had fixed itself and that he didnt need a filling. Thats what I love. He gave my kids mouth a chance. I think tooo many docs and dentist are just out there racking the bills up. Check to see if Dr Ball is in your plan. He is a great guy. We have been seeing him since my 16 year old was in the 1st grade!!!
Dr Ball###-###-#### he has 2 offices..the closest to you would be Greenfield and Guadalupe
Good Luck

Hi Rachelle,
I say if you feel that he is not being honest with you then I would trust your gut feeling. Mother intuition is never usually wrong. I had to change dentists not too far back after being with the same dentist for over 15 years, because of the insurance thing just like you. And I was suckered into believing I needed a crown on one of my teeth, it was the worst thing I could have ever done!

I don't know of anything about Dr. Montoya but the dentist I went to was the same way super duper nice and I felt like he wasn't going to recommend any unnecessary treatments but unfortunetely I believe he did.

If your insurance takes Dr. Brian Almendinger of Chandler Pediatric Dental, I would get a second opinion from him. My boys go there and he has been wonderful he seems to take the conservative approach and usually recommends "watching" things for a couple of visits before he actually does anything. I have total confidence in him that he would never recommend anything unnecessary for either of my boys.

Good Luck!

I would DEFINITELY get a second opinion. In my experience, dentists can be as shady as car mechanics by trying to tell you your teeth need work when they really don't. My husband NEVER gets cavities, and so he was suspicious when at one exam a dentist found 3. So he never got them fixed like the dentist wanted him to, and now 10 years later no other dentist has ever mentioned any cavities to him. Hmmm, I highly doubt the 3 cavities miraculously disappeared on their own.

I would definitely get another opinion. My dentist of 8 yrs all of a sudden started finding tons of cavities in my mouth & my family & was upset when I wanted to wait it out. I had a quiet conversation w/ the assisitant who said everyone is getting concerned. She quietly said dentists arent getting paid much from insurances anymore so they are jumping on every tiny possible cavity etc. So sad!! I'm angry at the ins. situation in the USA & angry/sad the dentists have to/chose to do do extra work.
Anyway, I went to a diff dentist in Tempe the last 3 times & he said I didnt have ANY cavities he was concerned about at all.
good luck

I don't know him but, check the BBB and the Phys listing. I think I'd get second opinion. Call your insurance of your concerns.

Good luck,

If you don't get any responses from people who know of this guy's honesty..I would get another opionion. Just call your insurance and switch to another Dr. In my experience, there are a lot of dentists who lie, so you are right to be skeptical. We see Dr. Jared Welch in Gilbert and he is honest and great with the kids if your insurance covers him.

Don't know him, but I'd definitely get a second opinion and not tell them what This Dentist said.

Children's Dental Village is great and very honest. They are on McClintock and Elliott -
definitely worth the drive. My kids love them. I just schedule them all at the same time. I have had other dentists tell my kids they need seals. Dr. Longfellow said they didn't all need them only one because her teeth were more porous than the others.

I hope this helps, it does sound a little fishy after 6 months. Have your children changed their brushing or eating habits?

Take care,
K.

I have 5 children that go to Dr. Montoya and I've had nothing but excellent service and complete honesty from him. My youngest child is 6 and has yet to lose any teeth, Dr. Montoya told me that he could fix the teeth because they do have cavities on them but that it pretty much is just a waste of money since they are baby teeth and would be falling out any time. I totally trust that he wouldn't do anything that isn't absolutely necessary. Ever since going to Dr. Montoya one of my kids is now telling me they want to be a dentist when they grow up because of the gentle nature in which he handles the patients, my kids are definitely not afraid of the dentist anymore!

Hi, I have never heard of that DDS but I go to a dentist with my 2 kids and husband who fears dentist beyond belief. The dentist is on the corner of Ironwood and Ocitillo at Ocotillo Trails Family Dentistry. Their number is ###-###-####. If I don't understand they show me and they show me anyways with the kids. I do much research on my dentist and all at this office are great along with their hole staff. If in doubt about any medical persons or their practice I don't go. I suggest the same for the sake of your kids check another out. Why didn't Montoya show you the xrays when they told you of so many, and what is a pulpotomy? And a crown on a child - the whole tooth is shot and that usually requires a root canal work. Call my dentist and explain the situation with out naming name and see what they say. I trust this office explicitly and my husband does also now. Nothing fancy office but all about the makeing sure your mouth is heathly.
good luck.
