Hello everyone!

We have been looking into RV's for a while now. We were wondering if anyone who owns an RV (class A in particular), can give us some info on insurance, tags, etc? If you have a class A - how much are you paying on insurance? How much did it cost to get license plates and such? Where did you buy from? (we are looking to buy near the DFW area)

Have you enjoyed having your RV (especially those with little kiddos)? Best places to visit?

Any info would be great! Thanks so much

What can I do next?

We don't have an RV of the type you're describing, but we do have a mac daddy pop up camper complete with toilet, shower and a powerful heater and AC. Love it! It's so easy to set up and to pull with our mini van, and it only impacts our mileage 1 or 2 miles per gallon. RV'ing with kids is fantastic!

We have a class A. It's actually a 1982 restored vintage diesel Bluebird. That means cheaper tags and cheaper insurance. We pay $32.00 a year for tags. Most counties don't look at value, they look at the year built. With cars that goes hand in hand, but most counties don't have a clue what the value of an motor home is. Our insurance is through USAA so it's very reasonable. That too is cheap...about $100 every 6 months.

We chose the Bluebird specifically for safety. It's metal, not plastic. They are, by far, the safest bus on the market. The engine will run forever. We do have seatbelts that are original. We love it...it's fun and traveled with our little ones who loved it and my elderly parents. We even lived at the beach in it for 4 months. The kids still remember that summer as one of the best we ever had together as a family. Campers and RVers are a throw back to a simpler time. We have kept friendships for years from our travels. If this is something you want to do, go for it. I don't think you'll regret it!

God bless!

This subject has some previous posts--especially regarding the basic LACK of safety restraints in an RV for kids requiring car seats. Please be careful & do your research.

We don't ave a class A but a travel trailer. It is the most fun way to travel. You actually meet people when you are camping and establish long term friendships. My parents and I have remained friends with a couple we met on the way to Alaska in 1974! We've done two 6 week vacations in our trailer. Oregon is a great place to go. There is lots to do and their state campgrounds are the best. My parents used to camp host for the Oregon State Parks. Many of these campgrounds have full hook-ups and nice shower houses. One our favorites is Honeyman on the sand dunes near Florence, OR. We stayed there a week and had so much fun. We like the trailer because you can leave it at the campground and not have to pack up everytime you want to go somewhere, and everyone is in a seatbelt. Another advantage of camping is that you can take your pets. Ours go with us everywhere and camp out under the camper as we are preparing to go. They love it too. Most campgrounds have a playground and the kids always make friends. Camping is also heathier on your waistline...you are able to cook and prepare things your family loves at home. My husband takes care of the insurance and taxes so I'm not sure on that. We also joined Good Sam's. They offer roadside assistance, and discounts at the majority of campgrounds. Just talking about it, gets me in the camping fever.
