Any Suggestions to Help Our Dog with His Meds?

One of our dogs had heart failure Sunday. Of course it is the one my son adores. My husband took him to the emergency vet, and they didn't expect him to make it through the night. I honestly had no idea it was anything that serious. Anyway, he came home last night with some hefty prescriptions. The thing is they are ridiculously expensive - over $100 a month! That's in addition to his much more frequent scheduled check ups. The pharmacy is supposed to call me to see if we can work something out, but does anyone know of any reliable, safe, legal, cheaper places to get heart meds? He's on Spironolactone, Benazepril, and Furosemide compounds. I know it's a long shot, but figured it can't hurt to ask. Anywhere we use absolutely has to be safe and legal! I am not about to just google drugs on the Internet!

I know there is another choice, but it isn't one I can make. So long as he gets his meds, he has quality of life. They think he can recover. I have to give my husband so much credit. Charlie, my dog, was abused before we had him, and he hates men. (Loves kids though!) He and DH never got along, but he is doing everything he can for Charlie and isn't pushing that choice. In fact, it is quite the opposite. He told me he wants to give him every chance, and he even sees this as a chance to have a "second chance" with his relationship with him. Not many people would do what he is doing for a dog who doesn't even like them. I know it sounds corny, but due to some things that happened previously, we really feel a higher calling to take care of him. Anyway, any suggestions would be appreciated.

***EDIT*** So upon further research I found out that these drugs aren't typically that expensive, BUT because my dog is so small (Chihuahua) he can't take the regular pills and had to have it specially compounded into liquid form. Who'd have thought you'd have to pay more to get less!

What can I do next?

We had a Cocker Spaniel with epilepsy and her meds had to be compounded. We got them at a drug store in Plano located on the SE side of Parker/Alma. I think the name I s Taylor RX and medical rentals but I am not positive.

I know your pain.....our dogs have cost a fortune in the long run but we love them dearly and will do everything possible to give them a good life. Bless you (and your hubby especially) for doing this.

Try your pharmacy you can have your vet write a prescript for it and turn it in. We used to do this allot at the vet I used to work at.

First I'm so sorry! Dogs are like one of your own kids I know mine is he's an 11 year old Cocker Spaniel. Anyway-have you looked into www.1800PetMeds.com I order my dogs arthritis meds through them because the vet wanted $85 per month through them I get it for $50. Usually they have free shipping too. Good luck!
