Any Other Mom Have a Hysterectomy?

I have debilitating, take-to-my-bed cramps every month from endometriosis, and am seriously considering a hysterectomy. I am 41, and have a 16 month old baby. We are not going to have any other children. Do other moms have this condition? Do you have other suggestions? I can't take birth control pills. I have tried acupunture & homeopathic remedies too. I am open for advice.
Thx!

So What Happened?

WOW! I have received so many great responses. I will not proceed with such a radical surgery at this time. While I thank those who have had it done, I realize I was speaking from a place of pain. I am not ready to give away a part of my body just because I don't like the way it treats me a few days a month. I will look into alternative methods, maybe alternative surgeries, to control it. I'll try alternative doctors & whatever else. Besides....early menopause runs in our family. At least, just for today that is the plan.. xoxo, J. (p.s. my husband thanks you too, even tho he doesn't know it.)

I had the same problem and at 30 years old and 2 kids later I had the hysterectomy. It was the best choice I could have made. I kept my ovories and everything has been great! No more cramps!!! Best of luck to you whatever you choose.

I recommend discussing an endometrial ablation with your doctor. It has amazing results, is outpatient, 3 day recovery (vs weeks) and fixed my problems. I was going to have a hysterectomy and can't tell you how happy I am that a friend told me about the ablation.

Hi J.
Precisely when I was almost 40 I had my last and younger child who is 14 yrs now. At that time I had endometriosis and it hurt a lot. Then the doctor put me some LUPRON injections and it helped me a lot. It's true that I felt the menopause symthoms, but nothing that cannot be controlled. Now I'm 53 and feel GREAT, and as some people, including my husband say, I look great, too. So, don't worry at all, you'll feel better than now. And best of all, now my husband and I enjoy sex better than ever. So don't worry for the flashes and all those myths about menopause, that's in your mind. Today you can find natural creams that help a lot without drinking pills. I love sex a lot and now I enjoy it better than when I was 20, believe me, now is better and more often, so don't worry about that part. Anyway, if you keep feeling that way, other things will get affected. Ask your doctor, maybe or better get a second opinion, but the important thing is your health, not only physical but mental. YOU WONT BE LESS WOMAN, you'll be a happier one. Good Luck and may God bless you.

I never had a histerectomy because I chose to put up with my problems, which was bleeding, because once you have a histerectomy, you are menopausal. Hot flashes, lack of interest in sex (you are too young for this), which your husband will not appreciate. You will be a candidate for osteoporosis, to name a few. If there is something you can do to aleviate your symptoms, please, don't get a histerectomy. That is the easy way out, but, not the best.
After a histerectomy, you can get a hormonal patch. In fact, you come out of the operating table with it, already. But it's not recommended because of the very bad side effects. As far as the pill, there are other ways to prevent from getting pregnant. My daughter had to have a histerectomy at 30 and I speak from experience. She is now 34 and dealing with a lot of issues due to it. Think about it.

Hi!
I had a hysterectomy done due to endometrosis which caused heavy bleeding and cramps. It has always been suggested that you get a second opinion. The procedure was done on the bikini line area. I'm a slow healer when it comes to surgery, so it took me about two months for recovery... but it doesn't necessarily mean that it will take you as long. I do advice you to have someone to help you out with your 16 month old baby since you won't be able to do heavy lifting or chase the baby around the house for a few weeks. You will be prescribed hormone pills or cream or both (hormone therapy replacement), which are good in order to avoid side effects which might include hot flashes, depression, mood swings... You and your doctor will determine which is the right hormone therapy, if necessary. Good luck and God bless you!

hysterectomy should be considered a last resort. Have you considered changing your diet. Endometriosis is mostly fixed thru dietary changes. I strongly suggest you go on a very clean diet of fresh, mostly organic, whole veggies not overcooked, lots of green leafy veggies, fresh whole grains (not whole wheat pasta) things like quinoa, brown rice, wheat berries, spelt berries, amaranth, etc, NO dairy, No sugar and NO animal products. Also eliminate processed foods. Your body will freak and discharge for a while and do some strange things, after it will be like a breath of fresh air, what relief. Contact Dr Stephen Zuckerman in Boca at Turtle Island something or other he and his wife are AMAZING acupunturists and get rid of bad cramps in Boca on Camino

If you are not having any more children have the surgery Best thing I've ever done The only other advice I have to offer is that you will need to take HRT or you will be absolutely miserable. I had fibroids and endometriosis and the surgery made life normal again. My uterus was the size of a 14 week pregnancy. I got super skinny and loved it. Good luck.

So, what is your doctor doing about the endometriosis? Mine had gotten so bad that I lost a fallopian tube and ovary (it was the size of a tennis ball). I did not know that I had it as I had no cramping, etc. During the surgery, the doctor also cleaned up all of the other areas that the endometriosis had spread to. Afterward, I was put on pills that basically shut down any cycles from happening to allow my body to heal. This is not going to go away on its own. Endometriosis is a form of Cancer so please make sure that you get the correct help. You may not need a hysterectomy so if you don't need one, then don't get one. Get more than one doctor to look at you and your circumstances. DON'T WAIT!!

I had a hysterectomy. I was never able to get pregnant due to the endrometrios. I had many surgeries and I too was unable to take birth control pills due to migraine headaches.
I had the hysterectomy at the age of 45yrs and it was a piece of cake. I wish I had done it earlier. I feel great - more energy, no more pain and finally enjoying things that I couldn't before. I highly recommend it.

Many women have been helped by drinking Tahitian Noni juice also, limit your caffeine and sugar intake. Unfortunately, the juice was not available when I had painful cranping. I eventually had a hysterectomy. If you choose this route research any hormones your Dr. may prescribe a couple are made from pregnant horse urine. Please let me know if this helps.

I was told about a procedure called endometrial ablation. Check with your gyno. It might be an option for you, especially since you are not planning on more children. Good luck.

DO NOT DO THIS JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE BAD CRAMPING! YOU WILL BE STARTING THE ON-SLOT OF MENOPAUSE AND YOU WILL REGRET THIS!

I would suggest that you first get Dr. Christine Northropes books, READ, LEARN about your body. How to improve its functioning by improving your immune system and yourself from the cellular level with DETOXING and CLEANSING. Ghange your diet to completely RAW FRESH ORGANIC AND VINE-RIPENED FRUITS, VEGETABLES, GRAINS & WATER! ELIMINATE ALL BEVERAGES AND DRINK NOTHING BUT SPRING WATER & FRESH SQUIZED FRUIT & VEGGIE JUICES, and maybe some yogart type of drinks like Keifer (organic only).

DO NOT HAVE A HYSTERRECTOMY....MY MOTHER DID IT OVER 30yrs ago and to this day she is still suffering problems as a result and she is 72yrs old! If left in, her natural menopause would have taken affect and she would be over all those Hot Flashes and Night Sweats by now enjoying life. Instead she is still fighting symptoms that are hard to get rid of because her body was forced into doing something UNNATURAL! She refuses to do HRT (hormone replacement therapy) and I support her 100% in that. I too am going thru menopause and also will NOT be take HRT.

Also start an immediate regime of HEALTHY SUPPLEMENTS (which take a little bit of research) of Calcium, Magnesium, all B vitimins, etc... My best suggestion for getting your vine-ripen frutis & veggies, vitamins, minerals, amino acids and friendly bacteria is Juice Plus+ www.juiceplus.com/+dm72556 for more information and please feel free to call me. My number is posted! But weather you order or not, all the above suggestions are very important to get you started.

You need to start REDUCING THE INFLAMMATION IN YOUR BODY because this can lead to Cancer! Not the cramping...THE CRAMPING IS A RESULT OF YOUR INTERNAL BODY OUT OF BALANCE! Drinking calming medicinal teas will help the cramping and cleansing too! Not LIPTON or teas full of caffine and other junk!

I am 38 years old and had the same thing happen to me. I went to an OB/BYN who did a scope of my organs and found that one ovary was fused to the back of my abdomen wall. I had the hysterectomy last June and do not regret it for a second!!! I take premarin to stop the menopause process and am doing fine on it. I used Dr. Kraemer in Coral Springs and he was absolutely wonderful. I joke around that I am asexual now. I am beyond thrilled that I do not get pains anymore. I spoke to quite a few women who had the procedure when they were young and not one had regretted it.

I invite you to come to my therapeutic belly dance class every Monday in Key Biscayne Community Center, just let me know if you plan to come ahead of time, to celebrate your femininity, your uterus, after all it birthed your child... to help you to move this part of your body, in a delicious and soothing way, so that your brain can make positive, peaceful, joyful connections to this part of your body you have associated with pain, and for blood flow to improve, muscles to relax, after all uterus is a muscle, probably tense from cramping monthly, but also from the frustration, fear of what is the right thing to do, maybe you are also a little resentful this is happening to you, not feeling in control, etc.... if you are up for healing through movement and dance, let me know, I can work privately or come to class in Key Biscayne, first class only $10.
For me personally, I have let go of pain, tension, I used to have terrible cramps when got period monthly, until I started exercising, doing yoga, belly dance, healing emotionally, I do not get any cramps now.
I can help with teaching you ways to relax in body/mind the parts that are tense... know that our mind set, how we breath, yoga, and massage are all soothing forms of relaxation, that can be designed to accelerate heailng for the areas involved.
We can stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system tone, to reduce the flight or flight response in the body.

The mind -body connection is very real, and we can create emotional healing, change our perceptions to assist with physical healing.
Wishing you well,

I have not had a hysterectomy, but have known a few who have for a variety of reasons. My only advice to you is give careful measure to your current life state before making this choice. Has this gone for your whole life or only recently? The women I knew who had hysterectomies all went through swings of different sorts-which you may want to avoid at this life state and consider later.
