Another Dilema with Potty Training

I have seen a few request for potty training and just ignored them. Now I wish I would have browsed a few of them. I have potty trained atleast 6 babies and have never had any problems. So, of course I just expected this little one to go as smoothly as the others. I feel she is ready: she helps dress and undress herself, she knows her colors and counting to ten, she calls me into the room when she needs me, and does not hesitate to tell me to get out!, she tells me when she is hungry and when she is all done. Now this is what she does with potty training: she will sit on the potty for an hour and hold her pee and 5 minutes after getting up she will pee. I have followed her around with the potty, I have bribed her with food, toy's and going outside to swing, sat her in front of Wiggle's while on the potty, gave her extra liquids, bought pretty Dora panties, sat by her side and read book after book just waiting, we have done the pee-pee dance and called mommy on the phone for ever success, the baby doll has pee-peed on the potty, and I have let her go without any underpants, we watched video and dvd's on potty training, we read books on potty training. She will get up walk across the room pee on the floor and come and get me to see what she did. Yeah!!!! she want's me to be so happy! So, I say no not on the floor never on the floor put it in the potty! I say where does the pee-pee go? She say's, "In the potty!" What am I missing? She is almost 21 months old. thank you, K. K.

She is just not ready. All kids are different and although you may have gotten other children potty trained at that age for this one it's gonna be different. It's that girls are usually ready before boys but she just might not be ready until she is 2 1/2. So I would just go back to diaper for now and in a few months try again. Remember to look for the signs that she is interested in going. Like she hates being in a dirty diaper, thinks it's fun to sit on the potty and is interested in doing it herself, etc. I know you want her trained now but if she is not ready no matter what you do she will just resist. Good luck.

I would honestly hold off for a little longer. I find they are much more ready just after thier 2nd birthday. Under two they just don't grasp the concept that well, they get what you want, but they just don't have "it" (whatever it is) to fully pull it off yet.

I have to agree with previous posters - my daughter is 3 on Friday, and she is just now wanting to wear underwear, but is still having accidents here and there. She did EXACTLY what your little one is doing and we started and stopped potty training 3 or 4 times during her year as a two year old. When I thought she was fully capable of doing it, she had no interest and would go in her pants, on the floor, etc. despite my efforts to take her every 20 minutes (with a timer), bribes, treats, nail and toe polish while sitting on the potty, books, toys, you name it! Frustrating to the 10th degree!

Our pediatrician also told us that she'll do it when she's ready - when she decides it's important to her. The more I let her know it's important to me, the more she has resisted, so we've gone the full cycle here. Good luck - patience...

They are all different aren't they? I'm no expert as I'm a first time mom of two (one potty trained). However, I have two friends w/ 32 month olds who are not yet potty trained (both girls). Both moms are frustrated, however, they've both been told by their pediatricians that each child is different and it's not uncommon for potty training to "wait" until 3. 21 months is still on the young side. Maybe just taking the focus off for a while will allow her to come around on her own.

I get frustrated with people who say that21 months is too young. My daughter was 18 months when she started potty training, my 2 daughters were both 2 1/2 when they were fully potty trained. Of course every child is different but don't underestimate the youngsters. I put my daughters in training pants and had a "beep" go off every half hour and the second child would tell me no and then pee on the floor after we "tried". She got tired of the beep and the process and started just going on her own. I agree not to push, but I also know that just waiting til they're 3 is not a good either. Try the "beep" be patient and dont hold her back. Also try having her "help" clean up after she has gone on the floor. Thats usually not to fun to do so maybe that will help too. Good luck.
