Alternative Medicine for a 2 Year Old's Cough

I have a 2 year old girl who gets a cough in the winter. It lasts a week or so then goes away and comes back again. We battle with this all winter long. We take her to the doctor to make sure it doesn't move to her lungs and we ask for ideas. They suggest cough medicine and a humidifier.

We use a cool air humidifier every night on low, set her room temp a little higher than the rest or the house (she still doesn't sleep under covers well), and if she is coughing a little I try Vick's on her feet with socks. It seems to keep the edge off the cough and most of the time we can get by without cough syrup.

But then if she gets a real congested head cold we need to give her a decongestant or a antihistamine. If we give her this 2 times a day for a few days she'll get hyper and can't sleep. I get the same problem. So my question is: Is there a homeopathic or alternative medicine out there that is SAFE for her to use to alternate with or even eliminate using a cough syrup? Any help would be appreciated!

What can I do next?

Hi J.,

We use the Melaleuca oil & a product called Sol-U-Mel.

I put two capfuls in the cold mist vaporizor.
We used this process in our son's room for his asthma too.

It seems to do the trick. My kids didn't like the smell at first, but they got used to it. And we saw a huge improvement. We also use the oil for brochile (Spelling ?)infections. It worked incredibley well.

My pediatrician also recommended that we could just use regular corn syrup for our 2 yr olds cough. Similar to honey, I suppose, but would be available for kids under 1. She said it coats the throat and works as a cough medicine would, without the worry, as we choose to limit any medications as much as possible at this age. As for the decongestant, we use a saline mixture, which is difficult to administer to a 2 yr old, but we have a spray bottle that you can put in their nose and gently tilt back so it drips in a little (rather than spray) and that will loosen up things a little. Good luck! I know it can seem never ending!

I was just reading an article on this. It says a teaspoon of honey for kids over one. Here is a link to the article http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,314805,00.html

Try zone theraphy. It is great. No drugs, they become addictive.

There is a children's cough syrup out there that has no sugar in it that will help with her getting hyper. We had to use it with our children too. I cant' remember the name right now. and i just threw the bottle away. but if you ask at a pharmacy they should be able to tell you

I have always bought a whole pineapple and cut it up and let them eat a few cut pieces. Dont buy canned pineapple because of the juice and other things they put into it. I heard of this from my friend and it has always worked when it was just a cough and not when it was not bronchitis or pneumonia. It usually stops the cough. I have never had it not work. Children under six should not be using cough medicine anyway anymore. My daughter and son both had this horrible cough for almost 5 months and they put them on different antibiotics and nothing worked until they were both put on a steriod for 3 days. I was nervous about it but, I do have to day that by that third day it was almost totally gone.
With the Vicks also put it under her armpits and on her chest this will help alot.

Try a spoonful of honey (of course this is only good for kids over one). I think it works because of the way it coats an irritated throat. It has worked great for my kids. Good luck!
