My 6 year old son has had this cough for several days now. He has no cold or flu symptoms. It has gradually sounded a little worse since the first few days. It used to be mostly in the morning and evenings, but now it seems to last all day. I asked him to spit out whatever he coughs into a napkin and show either his dad or I. So far he's only done it once and it has been clear. It started worrying me today when he was getting upset that he couldn't cough out whatever he needed to. Does anyone think I need to worry about this more than I am? His general health has been excellent.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Perhaps I am a little overactive when it comes to my child's health. It turned out to be nothing. Within a day or two the cough had decreased alot. We think he'll be better by the time we leave town on Monday. Thanks for all the advice. It was greatly appreciated!
Happy Holidays!

hi. take him to the pediatrician. It might be an upper respiratory infection and he might need to be on a nebulizer.

Could be the aftermath of a sinus infection or sinusitis (sinus irritation). I get sinusitis 2-3 times a year. It can act like a full blow cold or just an irritating cough (post nasal drip) It can hang on for what seams to be FOREVER! If the cough worsens than it could be moving into the lungs, which would constitute a visit to the doctor and maybe a chest x-ray. If the cough seams to be spasmatic the doc can prescribe Albuterol. It helps a lot, my 11 month old had a bad cough that would work up to seal barking. The Albuterol worked amazingly. Unfortunatly antibiotics won't help either, they are for the most part viral, seasonal or caused by poor air quality (fire or smog) When the fires broke out over here (central California) I had the worst sinusitis EVER! Pressure headaches, cough with all most no running nose. I have to say the best advice is to stock up on decaf teas, take nice warm steaming baths (breaks up the chest congestion) buy the tissues with lotion (haaaaa) AND best purchase EVER a cool mist humidifier shaped like a frog. I'm sure they all work as good :D

Hi B.:

Here are my recommendations: 1. That you no longer require your son to spit out whatever he coughs into a napkin. 2. That you visit NAET.com, order and read the book "Say Good-Bye to Children's Allergies" and go with your son to an NAET doctor at your first opportunity. I go to Dr. David Karaba in Fullerton and absolutely love him. His phone number is ###-###-####. One of the wonderful things about NAET is that for children or the infirm, they can be treated through a surrogate, i.e., you. Here is the description paragraph from the book information.

I would contact your pediatrician and make an appt for your son. If you have recently turned on the heat (if you have forced air heating) or put up your Christmas tree, maybe there is an allergy element to his symptoms. Better to get it checked out though, just in case it turns out to be bronchitis or something.

Since its been so cold at night, we have been turning the heat on at night, therefore all 3 of my children have a cough, its because the air is so dry in the house, i dont think your sons cough is anything serious, you might need to get a humifier if you are using the heat, but if you are really concerned then call his doctor!

You know, I wouldn't worry too much if it is clear and keep in mind that a 6 year old is not going to remember to spit whatever he coughs out into a napkin you'll be lucky if you can get him to spit it out at all. A lot of kids develop coughs and sniffles as the weather changes and their bodies continue to change as do the others he goes to school with. Try putting Vicks Vapor rub on the bottoms of his feet and then put his socks on. Not sure why but this seems to help sooth coughs. KristenC - single mother of 2 Daughter 9 1/2 and Son 3.

I have a 3-year-old and a 7-year-old who are both very healthy in general. I have found that sometimes the cough comes first and then later other symptoms develop, sometimes even a couple of weeks later. Or sometimes it could just be this incredibly dry air we have here, irritating the throat.
Somtimes it is just a little post-nasal drip in the back of the throat, even if they don't have a runny nose.
Of course if it keeps up and seems to bother him, I would take him in and have him seen by the doctor.: )

Wow, it looks like you have gotten some great advice thus far. A little about myself - I am a stay-at-home mother of 4 kids ages ranging from 6 - 11 years. I too have a 6 year old son with allergies and asthma. He is now on inhalers to help with the coughing but I also recommend changing out your household cleaners (including laundry) to safer, non-toxic items. These cleaners, once airborn, can stay in the air for 7-10 days and we continue to breath them. No Lysol or chlorine bleach, these are the worst for lungs that are still developing. My company offers safer products you can get at cost. I also echo what one of the other ladies said about mold, pillows with dust mites, getting rid of carpets etc. We are exposed to so many more chemicals in all our products these days it is no wonder asthma & allergies in kids has risen over 200% in the last 20 years!! One last thing, his diet if extremely important. Limit sugars, milk products & flour products (crackers, breads etc) as his body my be reacting to these as well. I hope this helps - but do check with a pediatrition as he may need to use inhalers to help him through it for awhile. Ours told us my son may outgrow it, I hope so!!

Whenever my kids get a cough, it could last for weeks. However w my older son, it's asthma. He has very mild asthma, and it usually presents as a persistant cough. In the beginning I didn't know. I just thought it was a cough. But it got progressively worse. Then I found out that asthma could present like that. So anyway, I'd just get him checked out.

good morning.
could well be allergies, but not to food. check your windowsills to see if they have black stuff that looks like soot by the glass on the inside and check potted plants for yellow growth on the soil. it sounds like an indoor air allergy of some sort. so if you don't find any mold--the black and yellow stuff--then check to see what you are putting into the air in your home. air freshners, carptet cleaners, bleach, toxic cleaners like windex can all irritate the lungs.

to get rid of the mold on the windowsills use MoldZyme. you'll have to get rid of the plants or re-pot them.

if you have carpeting, use a vacuum with a good hepa filtration system. also, if you have central air/heating, get the ducts professionally cleaned. you might want to get rid of the carpeting all together. same thing with blinds on the windows, best to go with curtains because they can be washed. wash his pillow every two-weeks and vacuum his mattress once a week. vacuum the couch and do not use febreeze on it. these things cover a dust mite allergy.

i would start with the mold and switching from toxic cleaners to bio-based green ones.

let me know how it comes out!
