My 13 month old has recently developed a rash over her entire body. Few look like pimples while most are flat. We thought it may have been an allergic reaction to a lotion that we rarely use on her.She's also had a cough which only occurs at night while sleeping and not during nap time. Dr. says the rash is viral but seems to be getting worse. It doesn't seem to bother her at all. She's her norm all day. Cortizone cream isn't helping much but am still using it. Dr. recommended breathing treatments for the cough and elevating her while asleep. Any ideas on what the rash and/or the cough could be?...They did not test for strep. She is on singulair and claritin for allergies already and the coughing had started about a wk ago. the rash, just in the past 2 days. I just took her to the doc yesterday.
So the rash seems to be clearing up after 3 oatmeal baths and a few cortizone rub downs! The cough has also gotten much better after the breathing treatments that Doc recommended! Thanks to everyone for your suggestions and ideas. Hopefully it goes away and stays away!!!
Did they test for strep? I know in younger kids they will get a rash instead of sore throat, but I always thought they had to be over age 2 to get that...? Also did they give her steriods for the cough? We(my Dr.) always try that first before breathing treatments?
If it doesnt go away quickly, which a virus should, I would get her in to see a dermatologist and allergist soon!
Took years for me to figure out my daughter has ezcema thats flared by certain allergies. They allgeries also disturb her throat.
Could be a number of things. I would have them test her for strep/staph. Our son is recovering from a nasty yeast & staph infection which covered most of his body. The cough could be from strep, viral or allergies. Or even have you considered GERD or reflux? My little one has it and one of the big signs that he is flaring is a cough over night because as they are laying down fluids are rising into their throats so they cough to clear. Have you changed bath or laundry soaps recently?
Just a few other ideas....rashes and coughs are so difficult as they can be caused by so many different things. I would suggest have your doctor run the few easy tests while keeping a journal of everything she eats, drinks, comes into contact with etc for a few days to see if you can find any pattern.
does she have knots behind her ears maybe chicken pox but it doesnt sound right. and use a humidifier in her room.
If the rash has any redness to it, I would highly recommend you return for a strep culture. If the dots are small and red, it is called Petichii (sp?) the classic sign of the potentially serious strep infection.
If she is NOT showing signs of fever, restlessness, irritability and soothes quickly when annoyed, then the rash could just be a reaction to a dermatological insult. Then I would recommend bathing her in a nice, warm salt bath with colloidal oatmeal. Just dissolve a good cup of salts (epsom, kosher, sea, table, any kind) into her bath, stir in another cup of the colloidal oatmeal. Both elements will help heal and soothe her skin naturally without soap.
I hope she's back to normal soon.
