Affordable Hotel Suggestion in New York City near Time Square

Taking our 3 teenage children during April vacation to New York City for 3 days. Would like to stay in the Time Square area (only because I have stayed in that area before and am familiar with it). We do not plan on staying in our hotel room much besides sleeping, but would like to stay in a good area and in an area close to all the common sight-seeing places. We will be driving from Mass. and would like to park our car at the hotel for the 3 days we are there (2 nights). We plan on walking mostly and taking a cab to the further places. Any help/suggestions anyone has I would appreciate. We are trying to keep this as low-cost as possible. Thank you!!

I stayed in NYC a few times, I live in NH now but when I went to NYC I lived in MA. I never drove in to the city, we parked in Stamford, CT and took the train in. The parking garage at the station is very reasonably priced and didn't have to worry about navigating the city. We stayed at the Marriott in Times Square once and it was amazingly inexpensive. We hadn't planned to stay overnight so we had no hotel reservations. Just walked in around 7pm and asked if they had any available rooms. There are so many places to stay around Times Square that you should be able to find something reasonable. You could try calling some of the hotels and asking if they have any deals, if you have Triple A you can get some good discounts. Good luck and hope you have an awesome time.

We stayed at The Belvedere a few years ago and loved it. Anywhere you stay near Times Square is going to be expensive but The Belvedere is more reasonable than a lot of other hotels in the area and the rooms are large for NYC. Another plus is that there is a small refrigerator in the room.

Good luck! I live in the NY metro area and the few times I've considered staying in town I changed my mind. Hotels in Manhattan are hugely expensive - especially in the Times Square area. My best advice is check with trip*advisor dot com and see what others suggest then try one of the blind bidding sites. Expect that you'll pay around $300 a night minimum unless you don't mind being way uptown or in Queens...or unless you don't mind bidding on a room blindly and take the chance. It works really well in small towns but is more "iffy" in the big cities. Good Luck!

We stayed at Sheraton. The rooms are smaller compared to Sheraton in other cities we have stayed.
Also, we always use priceline to book hotels. You do save a lot.

You can consider staying in New Jersey - we did that some years back (on the advice of a neighbor who worked as a travel agent) and took a shuttle boat across the Hudson. In April it should be warm enough for that but the boat has an enclosed space too. I can't imagine you're going to find anything inexpensive in Times Square! You're going to want 2 rooms anyway just so you have 2 bathrooms!

It has been a few years, but we stayed at The Salisbury Hotel on W 57th and were very happy with it. It wasn't anything fancy, but it was clean, spacious and the staff was very friendly. And it was, at the time, much less expensive than some of the other hotels. It's about a 1/2 mile from Time Square. We went with 2 teenagers, and we didn't have any trouble getting everywhere they wanted to go. We didn't drive, we took the train in from CT, so I don't know what the parking options are. Good luck, enjoy your trip!

"Deauville hotel" I took my 2. Teenage nephews, my daughter who's ten, and my mother. We all stayed in the same suite ( wich you can not find in any chain hotel) that had a queen size bed in one room, and on the other a sofa bed, plus one of those porta-beds that I had requested ( at no cost!). Also there's a bread and butter in the corner and we bought things for breakfast and to snack at night since it has a little mini fridge kitchen area (no oven ) it was very affordable more than the chain hotels! And it alloweded us all in one room! Also the location was great! It's on 29th street and park av. Just keep in mind that New York is huge, so be prepare to walk! Also I'm from Boston MA so you need to prepare them about how fast everything is in NY specially walking in the street you need to keep up with the NY pace! I didn't prepare my Kids and they where very underwhelm in the beginning!

Just a thought - when we drove from Boston to NYC we parked at the Stamford train station and took the Metro line into Grand Central Station. That way we didn't have to pay the parking charges at the hotel. It helped keep the costs down. Have a fun time : )

We are also from MA (actually I'm originally from Abington - small world!) and went to NYC last April. We stayed at the Holiday Inn on, if I remember correctly, 57th and 9th. It was very comfortable and under $200 per night. We considered staying in NJ but that's a real pain in the neck and we're so glad we stayed in the city. My husband and son were able to go a couple of blocks up to Central Park and go rollerblading in the morning, and we were within a 15 minute walk of Times Square. The subway was two blocks away and there were plenty of cabs. I felt comfortable and safe walking back to our hotel at 10PM with my husband and 4 kids. We all stayed in the same room, sleeping on 2 double beds and a cot. If two of your kids are willing to share a bed, you can definitely all stay in one room. We also drove and parked there. I think the parking at the hotel was an additional $30 per night. The one pain in the neck thing was that the parking garage has a height limit and we had a clamshell on the roof of our minivan so we had to unload that and stash it in the van in order to park. Other than that, this was the perfect place to stay and we will be staying there again when we go back this year. Have fun!

I would also suggest looking into staying in NJ. Secaucus is about 15 mins to get in the city, and many hotels have shuttles or nearby bus stops-really easy, especually if you will be out all day. The hotels are cheaper, you may get pool etc, and there are outlets and lots of good stores there too. Have had relatives stay there. Have a great trip!

Not sure if this would suit your needs but you could consider staying in Jersey City at the Weston or one of the other hotels in the area. Then take The Path (train) into the city. It is pretty convenient to Times Square but much, much cheaper than staying in Times Square. Have a fun trip!

If you like the Theatre I highly recommend Mama Mia, Les Miserables, Lion King, Beauty and the Beast. My kids loved Spamelot but that was not one of my favorites and I was some what disappointed by Grease. My husband really enjoyed The Blue Man Group...I was glad I saw it but can not recommend it compared to the other shows. You can also get last minute theatre tickets at TKY (I think it is called) tickets sell for 1/2 price the day of the performance but be prepared to stand outside in a long line.
