My nipples are about twice the size now vs 4 years ago, when I had my 1st baby. I feel bad for my child -- and I feel very strongly about nursing, She is getting milk, since she has wet and soiled diapers every 2 hours (approximately). I pumped milk (using the medela electric pump) for about 1 1/2 with my 1st baby. I have 2 questions -- first, any tips for helping nursing with large nipples. Second, do u think that using the electric pump for a long time, made my nipples larger. I have a small frame with 34A-B, pre-pregnancy. Thanks. C..

What can I do next?

Hi C.,

I am not sure why you feel bad for your new baby (congrats, btw!!), babies have nursed from mamas with all different sizes of nipples for centuries!

I would just be real careful that she is latched on correctly. sounds like she is doing OK since she's getting the wet/soiled diapers; just keep her in that good habit.

You could also contact La Leche League with your questions, they "wrote the book" on breastfeeding "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding". Their website is www.llli.com. You can call a leader with questions and/or attend meetings even if you are not a member.

Best of luck to you, and enjoy your new little one!

I have a small frame just like you and just like you after I had my first baby my nipple seemed to have gotten bigger and stayed that way. But when I had my second baby it didn't seem to make any difference when nursing. As long as your baby is opening her mouth all the way and getting a good latch then she is just fine. I don't know if the sucking is what cause mine to get larger or just hormones but like I said all was fine with my second baby. You should be ok.

Don't worry. Baby is getting what she needs.
If you haven't talked with a lactation consultant,
or with someone from La Leche League,
you might feel more confident after you do so.
I don't think using the pump made your nipples larger.

Hi C.,
I don't think nipple size or breast size has any impact on breastfeeding, and no matter what your shape and size, that is the only thing your child knows! So I wouldn't worry about that. Now just to clarify, are you talking about your actual nipples or the aureola, which is the dark part around the nipple? Because it is definitely normal for the aureolas to get larger and darker during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Your baby does not have to have the entire aureola in her mouth to nurse successfully. As long as you are not in pain and she is not latched on to JUST the nipple (which HURTS!!), you are doing fine. Good luck and enjoy this special time!
