Advice on Tips for Manicures

My friend surprised me with a gift certificate to a salon to get a manicure/pedicure. I am a very low maintenance person and I'm 38 years old and have never had the luxury of going to do this. So, I am clueless as to what is the proper thing to do. Since my friend is "treating" me to the manicure/pedicure should I tip the people there? I don't know what is common practice when you go have something like that done. How much is normal for a service like that is I do tip? Any advice would be great. She mentioned wanting to go this week and I need a little help knowing what to do!

So What Happened?

Just wanted to let you all know I appreciate so much all the feedback and great advice on what to expect when I go to the salon. I haven't been able to get there yet, but I am much more prepared now thanks to you all!

I am a salon professional and 15% to 25% is a standard tip. Make sure the tip is not included in your gift certificate before you tip the operator. If you feel the person went above and beyond then it is your choice to tip in addition to what was added to the gift certificate. Enjoy your first spa experience, hopefully you will be back for more!

I hope you enjoy your spa trip, it can be a lot of fun, especially if someone else pays. You should tip the people anywhere for 10-20% depending on how amazing the experience was for you. Have fun and enjoy!!

Well Laureal Enjoy Enjoy Enjoy!!!
Tipping depends on how good of job they do, & how much you can afford to tip. Since most Peds and manicures around here are expensive, I usually tip more then in others areas that are cheaper. Usually I will tip $ 10 for both services or $8 if the service was not to my likeing. Have fun!!

You should tip the technicians. I guess it will depend on how much the gift certificate is for whether or not your friend covered the tip or whether you will have to pay for it. I know I usually tip around 20% but I do go to the same place over and over and a rapport the technicians.

Wow...what a wonderful friend. I hope you enjoy yourself! I am sure you are a busy MOM! but take some time to "recharge" yourself! I usually treat tipping in the nail salon the same as in a restaurant. 10-15% for good service and 20% for SUPER service. usually it ends up 20% because I am so happy with being pampered for an hour!
You deserve it! enjoy~!

The better you tip the better service you will get next time (you will want to do it again it is very pampering and addictive). Im a stylist and used to do nails so keep in mind now that the economy is bad, most salons pay their stylists minimun wage to 8 an hour and they depend on tips to make up the difference(she went to school for 2 years). When I get my hair done I tip like I do everyone else 20% for good service 15% for decent and 5 to 10 if bad... none if terrible. Have fun, relax, and enjoy yourself. There is really not a proper ettiquette. Just be polite and remember, its all about you. kate

Hi, L. - Your certificate may or may not include the tip, but yes, you should tip the manicurist. Depending on how upscale the place is and how generous you want to be, I'd say $10-$20 for the tip. Enjoy!

I'm also pretty low-maintenance and had a hard time relaxing and knowing what to do at my first pedicure. I've learned that it's similar to the hair salon when tipping for a service- 20% to 25% seems to be standard. Remember to wear flip flops if you're getting your toes done- the kind that they give you there are flimsy. Also, make sure that your money/ gift certificate is ready before your fingernails are done- you don't want to dig around in your purse afterwards. Above all, relax and know that as a "Busy Mom of 6" you really deserve this!

Hi there, I had my first manicure when I was 33, so don't feel strange! A pedicure is the best though!! Hard to reach your feet, and they make your toes look fabulous.

If your friend is going with you, she'll pay the tip since she's treating you. But if she gave you a gift certificate, you should tip. I usually give $5 tip, if you have having both (manicure & pedicure), $8 or $10.

Have fun, enjoy!!!!

A tip would be appropriate if you are pleased with the service. I would think between 5 and 10 dollars depending. You may want to purchase good polish and bring it with you(ie. OPI). Then if you need a touchup you can do it at home. Bring a book, wear flip flops and have keys and payment out before they polish your nails. Relax and enjoy!

It is not required but as a courtesy to the manicurist and pedicurist, I always tip from $3.00 to $5.00 depending on my finances at the time.

Enjoy, I am sure you will be hooked after this. SIX kids?? Splurge and pay extra for the spa mani/pedi!!

You walk in and pick your colors for your hands and toes. Leave your diamond ring at home sinc ethey often hav eyou remov eyour rings and that makes me nervous. They do the work, and you relax with a drink or a magazine. Bring open toed shoes (flip flops are great) because after you sit under the dryers, your polish may still be soft. Have your keys accessible too, so you don't have ot dig in your bag for them with wet nails.

I tip 15-20% depending on the salon and the quality of the experience.

ENJOY!!!

What a nice friend you have! Sometimes when I get or receive a gift certificate like that, there may be extra money reserved to cover tip. I would ask how much the services are to find out if this is true. Just to be safe, though, I think 20% of the service cost is pretty standard, just like if you were to get your hair done.

Have fun!

Hey there!

I go to this amazing spa that I just LOVE! I love getting pedi's done...they are awesome! Mine cost around $28 so I tip about $5-6 per mani/pedi. If it's the same person I give her the same for both $10-12, depending on how much you like the outcome and experience. Some really go for it and massage and make you feel relaxed and sometimes it can be sped through. I also get my eyebrows waxed, I usually tip $3 on a $12 charge.
You totally deserve this, busy mom of 6! Go and enjoy yourself!! Relax and take in the experience and feel like a princess!! It will only last for so long before you are back home being busy again!! You may find yourself out doing this once every 2 months or so! If I get the chance, I try to! It's great me time!! If you go alone, bring a magazine, or try to close your eyes and just RELAX!!!!
Have fun! Best wishes!! :-)

its sorta just like tipping at a resturant, if you are very pleased more,if not less....
Where I do mani/petti its 28.00 ( pending cost at salon where u r going) COuld be more esp, in Washington Dc area? I tip 15-2o% normally
( 6.00 dollars on 28.00)
Ask your friend what she does...Petti is more work than mani thats for sure! So I always tip her more if its two different people~ have fun & enjoy!!!!!
If your friend gave u certificate u should do the tipping, I wouldnt assume she will tip to~
