I have a 6 yr old son that is on medicine for ADHD and I was wondering if anyone knows of what else I should try with him. He see's a pediatrician and she is a wonderful doctor. He is doing alot better and I don't see alot of problems but there is still the issue of temper tantrums. He will do a cry baby fit and run off. I don't know what else to do when those happen. I don't usually have any other problems with him. Any suggestions????

What can I do next?

My son was diagnosed with adhd when he was 5. It was an extremely difficult decision to make to put him on medication but a neccessary evil. I find redirecting my son helps and i never yell at him. It seems to ad fuel to the fire. I read a helpful book called healing ADHD and it helped so much with some techniques for the tantrums.

Hi J.
I know this will sound crazy, but have you considered chiropractic?
Here is a quote from one of our ADHD moms:
Our sons ages 5 and 8 have been on a maintenance plan at Family First Health Center for the last year. We can tell when they need to be adjusted by their behavior. Although each displays different behavior when in need of an adjustment, both benefit in similar ways. When properly aligned, each boy is calmer, has better focus, seems to have better control over their body, and can more easily handle the ups and downs of everyday life. It has made a positive difference in their overall disposition. We kiddingly say it is like "purchasing sanity".

There is tons of research on this topic - you can find some of it here:

We see kids all the time with this exact situation. We'd be happy to take care of yours too. Please let us know if there is anything we can do for you.

You are going to laugh but when my sons used to and now my grand daughter throws a temper fit I throw one too. What ever action they do I do back 2x as bad. If they lay on floor kicking a screaming I do too and it usually makes them stop. That is when I ask them if they thought mom or grandma was acting in a properly way or crazy? If they say yes then I tell them that is what they looked like and then ask if it is the proper way to ask for what they wanted or get attention. It has pretty much stopped it from happening as they know that they will not get what they want. Now as for as what else to do for ADHD well I would change some things in the diet plus add suppliments to diet. My son is on meds for ADHD and has been for years. We have to change the doseage and even types of meds because he becomes used to them. Now he is having more problems then the meds can correct mostly due to 1) puberty so hormones are affecting the effects and also 2) he is starting to have a side effect that sometimes happens with long term use of slimulates (High BP). The hormones can be dealt with by learning skills to manage the impulsive urges, focus better and adjusting diet. The high BP that is something that the only thing you can do it adjust diet, and discontinue stimulates so no meds. The suppliments are Ammino acids, removing from the diet sugars, yellow and red dyes, MSG and anything else that you notice causes surge in ADHD behavior. My son is on ammino acids that are geared for teenagers so he can manage so far with the doseage he is on. If the High BP continues we will have to deal with that bridge when we get to it. There are also books on how to deal with and manage kids with ADHD in health way as well as support groups for parents of ADHD. Put "ADHD" in search engine and look at each one till you find something that works. Plus you can go to any local book store and find tons of books on how to manage ADHD drug free or in health way. I have a couple that I use and also a websupport group that shows how to deal with ADHD in drug free way. If you want them then I can send them on private email to you just ask.
Hope I have been of help?

I am a mother of 4 here in clifton hill, I have a home based business. Have you ever heard about "Melaleuca", They have some very good vitamins, soaps, cleaners. I have been using these productgs along time and I believe that they are helping my youngest son. I am doing some research on a new product "unforgettables" ita a vitamin that helps the memory. I would love to get you some information about these products and how all your household cleaners might be affecting your children.

I recommend the book Setting Limits by ? Mackenzie. They actually also have a book called Setting Limits for the strong willed child. I did not purchase that one I purchased the Setting Limits one. It has a lot of great ideas! I am the mother of six with 3 on meds for ADHD and two of them also have a mood disorder and take meds for that. They see a psychiatrist for their meds instead of the ped. The psych. is now also recommending the book to her patients. It is really a good book. Good luck!

We are dealing with these issues as well, although our son reacted to the meds for ADHD. He is now on a different medication and things are calmer, but the fits are still an issue. Our psychologist recommended reading "The Explosive Child" and it has been really interesting. You might check it out.....good luck.

My heart goes out to you. My daughter has ADHD too but shows up in impulsivity and social issues and learning problems. My middle child had sensory processing disorder - We had trememdous - unbelievable progress with the Wellbarger's technique taught to me by an occupational therapist followed by large muscle group exercises that we did every two hours every day during waking hours. It is a brushing technique that you have to be trained on to do correctly and then the therapist came to my house once a week and worked the large muscle groups. Our progress was an absolute blessing from God and could very possibly help your child. We can talk more offline if you would like and I can give you the information for our private therapist. Heartspring was going to cost us $160 per week and our therapist was SUBSTANTIALLY less than that. The work done affects the development of the brain so whether it is being utilized to treat SPD or ADD or anything else it could be highly beneficial especially for a very youung child whose braing is very rapidly developing.

Have you heard about LIMU? My daughter is also ADHD, but "too young" for meds (can't havemeds until they are 4). I have had her drinking LIMU for about 3 months now and she is calmer & more focused. I can't wait for our appointment next month at Children's Mercy Behavioral Unit to show them her improvements!!

ALSO My best friend has an autistic child who is doing PHENOMENAL!! Check it out at www.easylimu.com

My boys have adhd also. I have been trying organic foods as much as possible, especially getting rid of dyes. I have also started giving them omega vitamins, such as fish oil or flax seed oil. My doc believes in the diet, but to do complete organic is just not possible for me at least. Need to be practial. There is a diet called the Feingold diet(spelling?) that is very difficult but is supposed to yeild amazing results. Sugar and caffeine of course is also a big issue. There are alot of books out about diet for adhd kids. My suggestion is to buy 3, read them all, and take the common threads in each one to try.
Good luck!
