Does anybody have ideas or advice on children with adhd? I have 3 children with it and they can constantly bounce of the wall and sleep time is hard because they can't sleep. The doctor has them on pills to help but it doesn't allways work.

What can I do next?

Hi M.,
I have a son that was diagnosed with it but am still trying different things before putting him on meds. One of his class mates is sverely ADHD his mom told me she put him on the South Beach Diet and he is on meds and it has helped alot. I would talk to their Dr and let him now that sometimes the meds work and sometimes they don't I also know that if the meds aren't taken at the same time daily that could have an effect as well. My two brothers were also ADHD. The different types of food eaten also serve as a factor as well. That is all the advice I can think of. My little boys friends mom is supposed to get me some info on it as well. I hope all works out for you.

I know many children with ADHD also see a counslor and that helps. There are also changes that can be made to their diet that significantly helps. Another suggestion is not to be a parent who does not give the meds on the weekend. these meds take alittle while to work which means they need to build up to certain levels in their system and when you misss doses this effects them for days.

M.,
I found this site helpful: http://add.about.com/cs/adhdinpreschool/a/proactive.htm
It gave me some ideas on what I could do to help my daughter. Believe me, I feel your pain. It can be so frustrating, I cant imagine having 3. My daughter is on focalin as well but like you said, it doesnt always work. There was a great episode on the Supernanny a few weeks ago as well. Maybe you could google that to find the tips she offered. I believe it was Episode 10 this season. Good luck!

HI M.,

My 9yr old daughter has ADHD, I knew from a very early age that she had this. However, her pediatrician would not listen to me saying I was a young mother and just needed to learn how to handle her. Finally when she started school the doctors started listening to me. She currently takes Strattera its non-stimulant and the difference is Amazing. We have to be careful with her diet and make sure she takes her medicine at night instead of the morning but it works wonders. Patience is a big thing, and I know I struggle with it daily. Its hard sometimes to tell the difference between kids just being kids and kids having problems with their ADHD. Some days I think she's being completely out of hand, when she's just trying to have fun and be "Normal" which, she is, but she isn't. We have some set routines that tend to help during the week especially. The weekends, we try to be more "relaxed" and just let what happens happen. I know that with my daughter, getting her involved and "helping" do things tends to calm her down. It gives her something to try and focus on. I'm not sure what age your children are, I've challenged her to try and work towards the goal of NOT taking her medicine forever. She doesn't like taking it because she doesn't feel like everyone else who doesn't need it. I hope my experince has or might be somewhat helpful, I wish you the best!

I work for a chiropractor here in Grand Rapids. We have treated children that have ADHD with Chiropractic Adjustments. Parents feel that the adjustments have helped the symptoms. It is something to try that doesn't take a lot time and it is all natural-no drugs :)

My daughter has been getting adjusted since she was a week old-she never spits up, she sleeps through the night, and she doesn't get sick very often. I can't imagine her not getting adjusted. :)

My son was diagnosed with ADHD when he was 5 he is now 10. And he is our first son, our other children don't have it. The dr. wanted to put him on med. but my husband and are against it for a myriad of reasons....a few being the side effects and kids can get too dependent. We took our son to Dr. Wacker he is an MD 1323 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing ###-###-####. He did extensive testing on any possible allergens he would have. He also looks at the diet. It's possible some kids can't tolerate certain chemicals in foods. I get some food at the healthfood stores. Better Health Store near Frandor, East Lansing Food Co-Op on Northwind Dr. (they have incredible sales), and Foods for Living. I hope this is helpful. I wish you the best of luck.

Hello M. H!

Have you heard of Melaleuca products? They are awesome! The mothers I have told about these products have seen improvements in their children. Also I would recommend removing all laundry and cleaning products from the home that contain harsh ingredients. You and your children are breathing these vapors in constantly and it has a negative impact on your over all health.
