Aches After C-section

I had my 2nd c-section 3 weeks ago today. It has been a much harder recovery this time. Aside from the usual pains in my tummy and the incision..my whole body aches..if I had a fever I would swear I had the flu. I went to the doc early last week..they ran some bloodwork which came back normal so I dont have an infection..although I was called yesterday and told that I do have a UTI. My question is..has anyone else ever had achiness like this after thier c-section? I get hot and cold and sometimes it feels like it hurts just to touch my skin. But the aches are awful. I have been taking ibuprofen and when it is really bad vicoden (trying not to take so many pain pills if i can help it). Doc didnt seem all that concerned..said if it didnt get better to go back but I feel silly constantly calling them. I started my meds for my UTI yesterday..didnt know if a UTI could cause some of this. I have looked online and not really had any luck on finding anything about ALL OVER body aches..thought I may get some insight here. I appreciate any information.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Not much to report. I took my last pill this morning (Macrobid). Strange thing is, when they tested me for the UTI, I told them I probably didnt have one because I had no symptoms..my only complaint was my whole body aching.. Now that I am done with my antibiotics, I have symptoms..makes NO sense. I actually started hurting a couple days ago. Had sent something to the doc..who said my pain would not be associated with the UTI since I had been on my meds for several days..and that my achiness was just because I had major surgery so..who knows. I had not called back because my 3 week old son had to go to ER on Tuesday night and they admitted him for observation for 48 hours..so we just got home this morning. I had no idea that if baby has a fever..even if it goes down..that they run so many tests and admit them..very scary..especially spinal tap. He is great and everything came back negative..so now I have to get back to trying to fix myself. I am planning on calling my PCP on Monday instead the the OBGYN again and just going in to be tested...I have had one before long ago where I had to be put on antibiotics more than once. Wish me luck..Hopeing to be able to enjoy time with my son before returning to work. Give your babies kisses..I had never been to Kosair Children's Hospital. Everyone was wonderful but it takes a special person to work there..I dont think I could. Thank you everyone for you responses.

well I had that with my first c-section and it turned out I had mastitis. Are you nursing? I didn't get a fever but I had lots of pain while nursing. I just thought it was because that's normal when your first start breastfeeding. After about 3 weeks I went to my doc. He checked me for mastitis and that was it. I got on meds and was fine after that.

I had that after all my C-Sections. I had UTI's and plugged milk ducts. Both of those caused me to ache like crazy!! Misery!!!!!!!! Good luck to you and congratulations on your little one!

I hope the meds for the UTI start helping immediately. If not, sometimes you just need to be adamant with your doctor (YOU know how you feel better than THEY do, and this is evidently not 'normal'!!) Or go to a different doctor or an ER. Sometimes if the preliminary tests don't show up anything obvious, they say, 'All's well' when it actually isn't. Dig deeper.

I had a UTI turned Kidney infection once. It was the most excruciating pain I have ever been in (way worse than labor/birth) and the whole body aches are definitely something I do remember.
If it is the UTI causing this, you should feel better within 1-3 days of starting the antibiotics...
Good luck!

A UTI can DEFINITELY cause that! In fact, UTIs can cause really horrible problems (sometimes resulting in death) in people who don't realize they have one. They can make you feel like you have the flu, and they can cause other problems to arise as well. I would give your antibiotics a day or two to kick in, but if you aren't feeling better by Monday, make an appointment with your family doc to see what else could be going on.

I did not have any feelings like that after my 2nd C Section. Call your doc again or maybe go see your primary care physician. It does sound like you have flu like symptoms or an infection. Don't feel silly calling them, that is why they are there and.....remember how much money they just made off of your birth. ;o)

Hey, Chelle -

I suggest you get in contact with your local ICAN chapter. They'll be full of good info on physical recovery. Also, there's a webinar you can download for a reasonable fee ($15? $20?) all about this topic here: http://ican-online.org/webinars/cesarean-scar-care

I had my second section nine months ago and it was definitely harder to recover from and more painful than my first. one of the younger nurses at the hospital told me that the second is always rougher than the first. my suggestion is to get a copy of your records from your ob i did with both of mine. use to be a nurse before becoming a sahm so i have always learning to listen to things around me and when i had my second child he was early so a different doctor did my section than the last. When she opened me up i heard her bad mouth the previous doctor even though they work in the same practice she said something about how the first doc sowed my uterus to my muscle and while having my section i ask her what she was talking about and she tried to cover her comment up by saying how good of a doc the other one was. After getting my record i realized that none of this was in them so i bought to both of the doctors attention. a week after having my last section i was still bleeding from the scar and over a month later they removed a large blood clot from the incision and i healed perfect so i would say listen to your body and instinct but do give the meds time to work that away you can rule out the uti causing in problems for you.

I've had UTI's with my pregnancies and didn't have any symptoms. When I told my younger sister about me having no symptoms she said she always knows right away when she has one because she starts feeling really sick with body aches and fever like symptoms. I was surprised to hear that, I thought symptoms were only painful in the urinary tract with an infection down there but after reading your previous responses and from my sisters experience, I would say that's certainly why you're feeling this way.

Having C-sections is a very painful recovery but mostly abdominal pain and you should be feeling much better by now with 3 weeks already passing, especially with this being your second C so I would say the symptoms you have are from your UTI. It will take a few days for the antibiotics to really kick in, take your pain meds (vicodin) if you have any still. It won't harm your nursing baby and should provide some much needed relief until your antibiotics have really kicked in. Good luck and hope you feel better soon!

I did this after my 2nd c-section too. I had my tubes tied at the time of the c-section. It was not till years later and a lot of pain/trips to the doctor did I find out that it was from having my tubes tied. I had surgery in 08 to have them untied and I am like a new person. Still have aches and pains but nothing like after my last c-section. I found that seeing a wellness doctor and treating the all natural way work better than anything in the years after the TL. I hope things get better.
