Abnormally Heavy Heavy Period

I wonder if this is normal, first time for me. My periods usually last 4 days: one day tiny bit, 1 day heavy, 2 days light. Both yesterday and today it is so heavy! Im going through tampons and pads every hour! I looked online and there are all sorts of bleeding disorders and cysts and forms of cancer. But i wonder if this is going to the new normal and not something that is really wrong...

What can I do next?

When that happened to me, the nurse at the gyno's office told me to take four ibuprofen, put my feet up, and monitor the bleeding. If I soaked through a pad every hour for four hours, go to the ER. At that point, she said, I would be hemorrhaging, and I for sure needed medical attention.

Luckily the ibuprofen and foot elevation helped the bleeding to slow and I didn't have to go to the ER.

Definitely put in a call to your gyno and see what their advice is.

I have always been told that if you are soaking thru a pad in an hour that it is time to see a doctor. At that point you are losing too much blood for your body to keep up. Dont panic until you know, Im sure it will all work out but you should definitely make a call to your doctor
Good Luck

my sister did that, in her 40's. Out of the blue, she was having very heavy periods, so much so that she had to always leave work to go home and change her clothes. It would just come on. She ended up having an (I know I'm going to get this wrong) ablation. It is where they scrape the lining of your uterus and you do not have a period anymore. That is the way I understand it anyway. It was good for her, she does not have any side effects at all, and nothing was really wrong with her that they found out, just heavy periods. I would speak to your doctor.

If it continues for the next few months get to a doctor. I almost lost my best friend because of heavy periods caused by fibroid tumors. She had so many tumors in her uterus that she was about the size of a 6 month pregnancy. Funny though her tummy didn't pop out, but she was always constipated, her uterus was pushing on her colon. This lady is a size 2-4 tiny woman.
Anyway she lost so much blood, her blood volume was so low she could have died in her sleep. It finally came to a head one day when her boss told her to see a doctor or not come back to work. She left work and went to an ER about a half hour away, almost passed out while driving. They used 4 units of blood and kept her over night. She was scheduled for a hystermecty as soon as they could do it but they had to get her blood volume up enough for her to handle surgery.

your body can change as you age....but since you're flowing so heavily & it's a Friday, I would immediately call the dr.

& just as a head's up, my dr always recommends not using aspirin-based products nor ibuprofen....both can thin the blood, creating more flow. He & my previous ob/gyn recommended using acetominiphen only. I am scheduled for an uterine biopsy & I was told this rule again.....to do my pre-appt prep. Hope all goes well....

I, too, began experiencing very heavy periods in my 30's a year or two after the birth of my son. As Jane mentioned, ablation is an option; however, only if you do not plan on having any more children. I have not had it done but have 2 friends that had the procedure - neither of them have periods anymore. You can also have the Mirena IUD inserted - it, too, is recommended for control of heavy bleeding.
