8 Month Old with Constipation

This is my third baby but this is the first time one of my babies has had this problem so I'm not real sure what to do. My 8 month old son has been straining to go for more than a day but nothing is coming out and then he cries. He is a breastfed baby. I think it caused from adding solid food to his diet. What should I try before going to get suppositories? And should I call his doctor before using a suppository?

Awww...can you call the Dr. and ask if a probiotic will help? There are some that are like a tiny pearl and slide right down.

Some Kayro Syrup in the bottle ,a Tblsp or 2 with formula also works,Thats what my son's Ped ordered when he was an infant, and if nothing else, and it sounds a little ole fashioned but, it does work, just a tiny sliver of gentle bar soap used as a suppository usually helps, make sure when inserting it that its wet . If baby isn't able to go for several days, and you 've tried everything, then I'd call the Pediatrician . Try to watch what baby eats and avoid combing certain foods that will cause constipation. ! Hope everything comes out alright ! C. S.

Also had the same issue with one of mine. Prune juice (add it to another juice if he won't take it alone), pear juice, pieces of ripe pear & apple, prune, peas, pear baby food. We also found a 100% Apple juice at Walmart (store brand) that had added fiber (bringing it's fiber content to the same as prune juice). You will want to take away anything else that is causing the constipation too (like bananas) and see if it helps. We also used raisins and cod liver oil in his juice but my son was over 1 when we did that. Good luck!

Rice cereal can cause constipation. I had to switch to oatmeal cereal for my daughter. Prune baby food really helps, too. One more thing you can try, it sounds gross, but works. Take son's temperature rectally. The thermometer stimulates the muscles (similar to a suppository).

I never wanted to chemically induce my son to have a bowel movement and
My pediatrician said- fruits that start with "p" will make them poop!
lol 10 years later I still remember his words. I put 2 oz of Gerber pear juice in a bottle with 2 oz of water- or sometimes 1 & 1, either way I diluted it by 50%, and everytime it would clean my son out. Even today if he's feeling full and can't have a bm he will ask me for some pears.

Both my sons got constipation from starting solids. We mixed cereal with a mix of 1/2 apple juice and 1/2 water. That seemed to help, although it probably won't be the instant relief you'd like now. I'd try the prunes now, and try the juice with cereal if you think the addition of cereal to the diet could be contributing to the problem.

I'll also note that I'm not a huge fan of juice and that my kids don't drink a lot of it in general, but our doc recommended this with our first when he had the same problem after starting rice cereal/oatmeal.

We had the same problems. Prunes and diluted white grape juice worked pretty well for her then. Now it's pear juice.

My daughter was constipated at that age and we used prune or pear juice added to her bottle. You can also add Miralax to his water but I would talk to the pediatrician as to how much to add. It is an over the counter stool softener. Good luck!

I just mix some prunes in with his cereal and it seems to work like a charm!

We always mixed a little prune and apple juice together to help. (the apple is just for the taste). If he will take a bottle at all that's how we did it.
