So today we noticed my 6 yr old eyes which have always been blue, now have a brownish red ring around the pupil....
I am thinking calling the eye doc on monday.... but in mean time has anyone ever heard of this?

added...
ok it is the iris that changes just the area of the iris surrounding the pupil
it is also only visiable when the pupil is dialated... later in doors they were his regular blue

What can I do next?

The human eye does not stop growing and developing until the age of 14. Until then even the eye color can change. I had blue eyes when I was very young, then steel gray, then grey with brown ring and finally they settled into a green.

I started school with blue eyes and they are very green now. I have been going to the Optometrist for over 20 years now and there are no problems. It's funny to look at my photo books from when I was younger! Yep, they were blue.

Just double checking that by "eye doc" you mean an opthamologist (a doctor specializing in the eye... for kids a pediatric opthamologist, preferably), and not an optometrist?

(Similar difference between optometrist and opthamologist, as the difference between a nurse's aid and a doctor)

Not exactly But my husbands eyes change from green to brown and vice versa so maybe her/his eyes color will change like his does. Still worth checking with the eye dr. Just to be safe

It is good to be safe. My eyes change with the seasons in a way. They are green almost all the time then will go a kind of brownish color from time to time. I believe it is normal, but it's always good to check anyways. I had a friend that has normal eyesight and she had green eyes with a brownish ring around it, it was cool.

I think it is a good idea to call the doctor. It could be a natural change or mean something else is going on in her body or eye. As hard as it is to wait, I think you'll just need to talk to the doctor on Monday.

I'd be more worried if it was just one eye, color changes are common especially with lighter eyes. As they are exposed to the sun the pigment can change just like our skin. If there was a problem it would most likely only affect one eye or not be even like it sounds like they are. I was born with blue eyes and now have one blue and one brown, with two blue spots, one of which has gotten bigger over the years. My sister has the blue eyes with a yellowish ring in the center and that look gray or green with what she wears. Sounds normal but I'd ask just to be sure.

What color are the parents eyes and grandparents, siblings, aunt and uncles?

When I hit puberty, which was later than most, my brown eyes started turning green. It started with a a tiny band around the outer part of my eye and with time it went slowly inward to about the center part. I thought my eyes were turning green, which I was happy about cuz most everyone has brown eyes. Well, it stopped. I'm 45 now and to this day some days the green stands out, especially if my pupils are dilated, and people think I have green or hazel eyes. Most days you can see my eyes are brown or mostly brown.

My dad had brown eyes, my mom has blue eyes.

My oldest two sons have dark brown eyes that never changed. With my triplets, one son has brown eyes and has never changed. My daughter seemed to have green/blue eyes at birth and stayed more green/brown for a few years. Now her eyes are mix of brown with some green but no bands. One son had flat out blue eyes! I'm married to a Hispanic man and my eyes are brown so I never imaged having a child with blue eyes. His over time his become a more dull blue depending on this daylight and his mood. Some days they are bright blue and other days they are dull or even gray. I think his eyes are still not set to their permanent color, same with my daughter. The trio is almost 7.

I know there are plenty of babies who seem to be born with some type of blue in their eyes but soon after birth they go to their normal color. But these two have had a mix of colors and never stayed the same. Never thought that would happen but with so many different nationalities in them who knows what their genes will settle with, lol.

I wouldn't panic. Call a doc if you're unsure but sounds normal to me.

Eye colors can change a bit... maybe you had never noticed it before because pupils have usually been bigger.

My daughter was born with bright turquoise eyes... sometime before her 3rd birthday, her eyes changed to a beautiful leafy yellow green with some dark gold brown in the middle around the pupil - which only shows when he pupils are small.

It is important to know what color your eyes are. My exes eye color changed from kinda a hazel to brown with no rhyme or reason as to why.

I have been told it is perfectly natural for some eye color combination's eye color to change.

Mine are dark brown, no recessive, they don't change. Three of my four got the brown brown, one got the blue recessive, his eye color changes but not to the extreme his dad's eyes do.

I don't know anything about eye disease, so I have no idea if it's a symptom of something.

But my eyes were bright blue (like my dad's) until I was 16. That year, they changed color frequently. It was really weird! Some days they were grey, others they were turquoise, bright blue, light blue, green. I thought it was fun, actually. Often, it depended on the color I was wearing, but not like with a normal person. Like my son, whose eyes are greyish green, look more olive green when he wears an olive shirt, or sage green shirt when he wears that color. No, I mean they matched my turquoise shirt perfectly (this was the 90's--can you say teal???) and a grey shirt perfectly, a sage shirt perfectly, and a royal blue shirt perfectly.

And then they settled on grey-green, which is the color of my mom's eyes. But they have a blue ring around the outside.

My son that I mentioned here had bright blue eyes that changed to grey-green sometime before he turned 5. My second son had brown eyes, but they're getting very much greener. My third son is only 1 1/2, and has startlingly blue eyes. I wonder if they'll stay that way?

When I was a kid, my eyes were very brown & now they're a nice shade of olive green but if you're really concerned I wouldn't hesitate to call an eye doctor, just to be sure. Good luck.

i've heard if brown eyes get a blue ring around them it means high cholesterol but never heard of a brown ring around blue eyes. Hopefully it turns out to be nothing but "exotic" eyes :) Let us know.

It is not the eye color that is changing.. .but that your baby now has a brownish-red ring, AROUND the pupil. Circling the, pupil.

You need to see, an Ophthalmologist.
This is a medical doctor.
An "Optometrist" is not a medical doctor, but specializes in eye accessories (glasses, contacts and does do eye tests).

It is the "iris" of the eye, that has the coloring of the eye.
Not the ring, around it.

And, the "pupil" is the black/dark dot or hole, in the center of the Iris. The pupil is where we 'see' from. And the Iris, is the circle around, the pupil. Which is our 'eye' color.
It is the Pupil, that dilates....per light coming into the eyes.

So, make sure about your child's eyes. IF it is his/her eye "color" (ie: the iris) that is off colored. OR if it is the area around and circling, her Pupil.
Or is it the area encircling her Iris?
2 very different things.

When people are talking about eye color.... it is referring to the color of the Iris.
Not the Pupil.
But yes, the color of the iris, can change in some people.

Is this the color you mean?

I never heard of that. I always heard babies eyes can change colors maybe threw that first year. My husband has hazel and I have brown. My 2 girls has brown eyes and but my little boy came out with blue blue eyes. I thought his eyes were going to change by the time he was 1. Never happened. He's 2 and still have his blue eyes. But then again I always thought my mom had brown eyes, until today when I talk to her and notice that they are hazel. So maybe as they grow they can change colors? I really don't know. Maybe talk to his pedictrican or call a eye doctor and get him check out. I hope that helps. Good luck!! :)

My daughter is 14. Her eyes are green. Sometimes like today very green. Other days they are hazel. Some days they appear almost blue. A lot depends on the the color of clothing she's wearing.

I don't think it's anything to be concerned about, but just to be sure I would give the eye doc a call.
