my 6 yr old daughter started with what i thought was pink eye then later i noticed a rash on the back of her neck and it has spread to the front of the neck and part of face. she also has a sore throat and cough. the dr. wasnt sure what the rash is so she told me to give her benadryl and some drops for her eyes. her eyes arent that bad so dont think its pink eye, but why does she have the rash and sore throat? she tested negative for strep. anyone go through this?
i was so sure it was gonna be strep, she had it acouple months ago. they swabbed her throat a second time and told me if they find anything they will call me. but should the rash be spreading up to her face?

What can I do next?

For strep the rash usually appears concentrated where it is warm - groin area and under the arms. Doesn't sound like strep.

Bring her back to the doc's. Sounds like strep to me.
If he won't help, find another doc.

It wouldn't hurt to get another strep test, but the lack of fever and the existence of the cough make it sound like a virus to me. There are a wide variety of viruses that cause rashes. In fact it's often difficult for the doctors to figure out the cause for that reason. My boys have had viral rashes and I just had one a few weeks ago, cause unknown except that the doctor said its pattern was viral. Viruses can also cause kids to break out in hives. It happened to my son so severely when he was about 4 or 5 that he had to take oral steroids for a little while.

Yes, and it has always ended up as strep although sometimes there are 1-2 negative strep tests first. It is possible to get a negative test early on and a positive one a day or two later. So, don't hesitate to follow-up and request another if necessary. A big factor, though, is whether she's running a fever. If so, much more likely to be strep. My daughter had hives all over her body for 4 straight days in january, and I took her to her dr twice. The dr said it was basically a cold virus and would go away when the cold did and implied that she thought I was overreacting. A few days later, though, she had strep

Well I have been reading quite a few posts lately about this hand, foot, and mouth disease. Some people said their kids had symptoms similar to strep and that's what it turned out to be.

Hope little girl feels better!

My children that got the strep rash, had scarlet fever, got it on the stomach mainly or first. I wouldn't think this is a strep rash from my experience with it. It wouldn't hurt to get another strep test though to be safe. There are so many rashes out there you need a doctor to diagnose and I've found they don't well with rashes either.
