6 Year Old with High Fever After Recent Phneumonia....

I see your name and location and age of your son, so I'm thinking you are the same mom who wrote the other day about your 18 month old and his severe stomach issues.. it is nice to hear that if this is you, that he did not end up hospitalized and he just has a stomach bug!

With regard to your daughter, she has a high fever, is it accompanied with a cough? Does she have the same symptoms as before? I would most certainly phone the doctor to tell him of this fever relapse and see what he suggests. Keep your daughter well hydrated and give her tepid baths to help reduce the fever until you hear from your doctor.

If your daughter was in the ICU for 2 weeks, her complications must have been severe from the mycoplasma... she may be in a sensitive state of immune recovery and may be susceptible to this organism again since the incubation period is 2 - 3 weeks... please phone the doctor and keep a close eye on your daughter and her fever.

I am one who says, give them a little motrin, tuck them in and they will be fine....... BUT with your daughter's history and a fever that high, you for sure should take her back in. I would not even associate your son's illness with her at all. Take her in for another chest X-Ray.

Take her.... ASAP.... the the ER.

What did her discharge papers say about when to return? Usually, there is a section that lists symptoms or conditions upon which it is appropriate to return to the hospital or call your doctor. Do you have a number where you can reach her doctor or to ask for a call back? His answering service should be able to get him for you. Or the hospital. Ask him.

If you can't contact her doctor, then I would take her in. You do NOT want to be sitting up all night watching, wondering, praying that you are not mistaken about a decision to stay home. The middle of the night scenario is worse than if you just go in now. But call the doctor ahead of that if you can get him/her. Because yes, pneumonia can recur.

Take her back. Better to be safe then sorry!

According to my pediatrician anything 104 and over needs to be seen by a doctor. Call your pediatrician and/or the hospital for specific advice. My daughter had a fever of over 103, we went to the doctor's office and we took her home only to have the fever spike to 104.3 in the evening. It finally went down alternating tylenol and motrin every 2 hours. I was frantic and on the phone with the doctor every half hour until the motrin got it down (it took over an hour for the medicine to kick in). My personal judgment call would but call the doctor, but unless they say rush her to the ER take her to the doctor the next day (as long as the fever goes down to 103 or lower with medication). But I am not a medical professional and sometimes you have to follow your maternal instincts.

definitely the ER if you can't get a dr. visit within a few hours at most. A new fever after a recent illness is not a good sign.
