6 Month Old Not Babbling

My daughter is 6 months old and is a very happy content little baby. She isn't doing any babbling. The Pedi said not to worry, but of course I am now more aware of it and am worrying. She makes screeches and screams and is happy to sit and play and she is definately an observer. She loves watching people, cars, the waves. I am sure I don't need to worry, but at 6 months today I think she shoud be saying more. I talk to her all day long, tell her where we are going, what we are doing next and when we are eating and taking a bath...you get the picture. I guess I thought since I was so interactive with her that she would imitate sounds sooner. Anyone go though similar situation. Thanks.

What can I do next?

Your baby sounds perfect. I was in the same situation. Definitely don't worry about the babbling, my son was a little late with a few milestones, he tended to do 3 or 4 milestones all at once(crawling, standing, first word at 9 months) and he is totally normal. It is great that you talk to her and explain what you are doing and in the future you will find that even though she doesn't mimic you at 6 months, she is taking it all in and remembering what you said to her and before you know she will be babbling and then eventually talking back to you and you will be in real trouble :)
Anyway, good luck with everything. I know how hard it is to be away from family and friends.

I'm going through the same thing with my 6 month old little girl. She was babbling up a storm from 2-4 months, now she will only say 'mum, ma, ma" every once in awhile, but I'm sure she's not connecting it with me yet. She laughs and squeals and smiles a lot. Also, physically she's excelling; She was using the pinching action with her thumb and forefinger at 4 months that babies don't usually use until they're 8-9 months. she started crawling at 5 1/2 months. Now she's started pulling herself up to stand, but still not much babbling at all. Maybe once a week she'll have a day where she's a little more vocal, but mostly noises, not vowels, consonants..etc. I'm worried as well. My nephews are over a lot and they watch tv and I'm worried because she will watch it intently with them. When you talk to her while the television is on, she will completely ignore you, mesmerized by the tv. I've heard that watching tv before the age of two can delay speech, I'm concerned this is what's going on. Is there anyone that can tell me if their children watched tv and if their speech was delayed?

M.,

I would lay your daughter on the floor or changing table or even a bouncey seat where she can look directly at you, no angle. Then repeat mom, mom, mom, mommy or momma which ever you want to be called. Do the same with daddy,- da, da, da, daddy. This is how my daugther started to imitate me. She saw the movements and shapes my mouth was making to get those sounds. You can also do this and imitate the sounds she makes. But like the doctor says I wouldn't get too worried about it, especially if you aren't concerned about her hearing.

Good luck,
L. M

Don't worry! I know the book "What to Expect Your Baby's 1st Year" says that 6-month-olds should babble, but that's not quite correct; babbling usually doesn't begin until baby is around 8 months. As long as your baby appears to be making prgress, she is probably fine.

it's still a little early, but if you are really concerned, contact Swampscott's Early Intervention program. You can call the school dept to get the number if you can't find it.. they will set up an appt with you and do an evaluation to see if they suspect any speech issues.. it takes a while to go thru the process , so call now and you can always cancel.. good luck.

Dear M.,
You are doing everything right. Keep talking to your baby, and in no time you will be rewarded with increased verbal responses from her. 6 months is still a little young for a lot of babbling- so try not to worry. You may want to have her hearing checked just to reassure yourself that this is not a problem. Also look for non verbal responses to your vocalizations- does your baby make eye contact, turn towards you when you speak to her, smile and coo in response to your words, show surprise at loud or unexpected noises, follow your finger with her eyes when you point to something or follow a toy with her eyes when you move it back and forth across her vision ? Does she hold her arms out to you, or relax her body, when you tell her you want to pick her up ?If so, you can be sure she is developing in a normal, healthy way, hearing you,and processing what you are saying, and she should be babbling up a storm in a month or two!
