3 Week Old Screaming in Pain Because of Gas!!!

I had a beautiful baby girl on April 21 and she started on Enfimel, my doc switched her to the Gentle Ease, didn't work, then tried soy and plugged her up, now we are on Nutramigen. Do you think this is normal for the formula to be changed like this only at 3 weeks? My doc says it is okay until we find the right one, and after one day, this one is already working. Just wanted to get some mom advice on the switching formula and ideas for the gas problem.

We tried the over the counter drops, no luck, and we move her legs a lot to get some gas out.

What can I do next?

It takes a couple of weeks for any kid to get used to the formula. And it takes a week or so to eliminate the old formula out of their system. By switching so many formulas that can lead to a lot of gas. I would try the regular Nestles Formula (Gentleease) and stick with it for a couple weeks. Most babies have gas, especially the 1st 3-4 months. Have you tried Gripe Water- that is the only thing that worked with my 2nd child.

If your baby was in pain with other formulas then changing to find the right one is the only thing you can do , you say she is better now on the one you are using so stick with that , it won't do her any harm changing the formulas. I don't see why PP try and "push" you with their responses to breastfeed , you have your reasons to not BF and they are your choice and should be left as that , considering BF'ing was not even mentioned in your question.
Parenting is a minefield and other parents always think there way is the right way , do what you feel is right for your baby , your mothering instict won't let you down.

As a side note , to try and help with the gas issue , if your not already doing this then half way through a feed , stop her and burp her , I found with my kids that they burped better if I put them over my shoulder so their body was stretched out longer rather than just sitting them up.

Good luck

take an old sock and fill loosely with plain uncooked rice. Tie sock closed. Then place in microwave for a few seconds until just warm. Then lay it across baby's tummy. It will hold the warmth for about 12-15 mminutes and the warmth helps with the pain and helps them to relax and then viola gas is released and tummy feels better. Also, the little weight on the tummy helps to push it out too. I also found that when mine were little and they woud fall asleep in my arms that they always woke a few minutes after i had laid them in the bassinet. Drove me crazy!! Well, I started to warm the sock and lay it in the bassinet. then when I put them down, the sock replaced my body heat and they didn't wake up!! Of course the sock eventually cools down, but it does so slowly and so it doesn't bother them. So there is another trick for you to use it. As a side note, my son was BF'd for some time, but had similar problems regardless of my diet changes to help the situation. Eventually we changed to formula and switched often through 4-5 different ones. We would give about 12-24 hours with each one. I found I knew fairly quickly if it was going to work or not. Once we did find the one for him, I knew during the first bottle! it was like I was feeding a totally different kid. He was always so restless and always seemed to be starving, but then he would sputter like he was choking, but i couldn't get him to calm down & go slow. It was frustrating. During the Nestle Soy formula, he started to drink and he was calm, he wasn't drinking like it was his last bottle or like he hadn't had one in a week. he was so calm and afterwards, he burped so easily and promptly fell asleep. I think my words were, "Now that is what I'm talking about!! Hallelujah AMEN! Then the days to come, he became a different tempered child. No more colicky hours in the late afternoon.... No fussing for no reasons..... no more fighting sleep.....no more eating every 45 min to an hour, but started going to 2 -3 hours......no more sleeping in 45 minute bursts, but taking longer and longer naps, which of course he would wake being so cute not cranky. So while switching the formulas isn't ideal, when you find the right one, it will be so worth it and the sooner the better. Best of luck, oh & congrats on your little baby girl!

Normally I would say no. It takes everyone's system a little time to get used to any dietary change, especially baby's. At this point though it seems like you've found something that works for her.

Can't help you with the gas, but check out the dvd/book Happiest Baby on the Block by Dr. Karp - has some soothing methods that might help :)

Also, there's a way to hold the baby, kind of like she's sitting indian style in your hands - you sort of support the baby with her back against your tummy, and then swivel her legs in a circle up and down - you're holding her feet in one hand so you can hold her while moving her legs around.

Sorry you had to be questioned about your choice to formula feed.

So your little O. is about 9 mos old? Or did you mean April 21st and she's 3 weeks old? I'm a little confused about that...sorry.

I think it takes several days for a baby's stomach to get used to anything! I was lucky, my son started and finished with Similac Advance. No problems except when we tried using the powder--he seemed fussier and more gassy. Then pre-mixed worked best for him.

O. thing we used to do was warm a little hand towel in the microwave and rock/swing/hold him with the little towel near his tummy. The warmth seemed to help.

And burp, burp, burp her! Good luck and Congratulations on your little girl!

Are you breastfeeding a little bit and supplementing with formula?? It's your best bet to continue trying to breastfeed - sounds like formula isn't easy on your baby... if you can continue, or boost your breast milk, it's going to be the easiest for baby to digest.

My daughter went through 3 formulas in 1 month before we found one that worked. She would spit up everytime we layed her down. I think its actually better to change her as soon as you feel there is a problem rather than waiting.

Hi there, Yeah it can be like that with the powdered milk! I remember my daughter had to be change many times before we found the right milk for her. But she still had gas , I used to peddle her legs and move her leg up close to the tummy. Try that it does help alittle but make sure the milk doesn't have alot of bubbles in it. Mix the milk with a spoon instead of shaking it. Because its not always the milk it can be air in the bottle that will cause the gas as well! Try not to let your baby suck air and you should be good! I wish you luck and hope that she feels better!!!!

April 21 makes for about 3 weeks, but you're tired and I completely understand. I was breast feeding my son and he still had gas troubles. Rapidly changing formulas just doesn't sound right. Are you sure you can't breast feed? A lactation consultant can help a lot. The Mylicon drops help, but it only goes so far. You have to burp right after a feeding and sometime burp in the middle of a feeding. Keep the child upright after a feeding, then work in other burping positions. My son was very comfortable in a moving car (he's 11 yrs now and still sleeps in a car easily). It's possible you are doing everything right and your child is just colicky. It's hard and nerve wracking, but it doesn't last forever. Hang in there. At 6 weeks things got a bit better with my son, and we were doing great at 8 weeks.

Give her babies magic tea to soothe from gas pains. The tea is natural and very good for gas, constipation and acid reflux.
