Hello there...I'm sure many of you have gone through this, but my 2 year old (24 months) will absolutely NOT drink milk from a sippy cup....water and juice mixed with water is fine, but no milk. She loves drinking it from a bottle and I recently took away her morning bottle and give her water. She asked for her bottle for a day or so and now drinks water instead. She also drinks milk in her Cheerios. Tonight I took away her bottle and tried to give her milk in a sippy cup that she picked out in the store. She would not even try it and then screamed and carried on because I kept getting her to try it. Has anyone ever just added a little milk to water? I figured since she loves water maybe I could get her to have it that way. There is no way I am giving her a bottle anymore. Any other suggestions I would really appreciate it!! Thanks :)

What can I do next?

Try a straw cup. Those Toddler cups, with a cover that you can use a straw with.

But, for a child "milk" comes from a "nipple." Hence, they like to drink milk from something with a nipple. Be that a breast or a bottle. It is instinct... and to a certain degree, it is comforting etc.
So that is why, many times, they reject drinking milk from a sippy etc.

One day she will drink milk from a cup or straw cup.
My son, was resistant to drink milk from a cup/sippy, but then one day, he would drink it from a straw cup.

Toss the bottles in the trash and let her see them go, drive to a trash bin by a store so you won't be tempted to dig them out when she cries for them.

Get another cup like the one she already has. Be matter of fact and hand her the cup with milk, if she refuses it offer her water or juice in another one. Tell her it's juice, water or milk in the cup, the bottles are gone. If she cries take her to her room and leave her there until she stops, which is usually as soon as they lose their audience. She'll stay hydrated on water and juice, and since she's drinking milk in her cereal you can add some yogurt and cheese as snacks to her diet and she'll get the dairy she needs.

Don't worry, it may take a few days until she accepts the reality, just hang tough and don't back down ツ

Give it to her in a CUP! 3oz dixie cups are GREAT starter cups.

At this age they really do not need milk. So I would give her milk in a real cup (they can start using them by now) or no milk at all.

I'd offer it in a cup with a straw. Try flavored milk. I put about half the amount suggested of Nesquik in DD's milk. Just enough to be different.

My DD is not a huge milk drinker. And neither am I. If she doesn't want milk in any other container, then don't serve it as often but give her cheese and leafy greens and other sources of calcium.

I wonder if this common battle over the bottle is the reason doctors and many others recommend getting rid of the bottle at a year?

This is the second post today about 2 year olds refusing to drink milk from anything except a bottle......

At a year, they are more compliant.....

I'm glad you already said you are not giving her the bottle anymore.

Just keep offering her milk in a sippy cup.... milk or water..... in a few days, she will probably accept it.

Don't argue... just put it at her plate for the meals..... don't keep coaxing or begging her..... let her see YOU drink milk from a glass..... she may follow suit fairly quickly.

You could try her on a regular cup, and once she is used to it that way try the sippy again for when you go out.

I had the same issues with my two boys. what I learned....

They will get the calcium they need in other ways, during their rejection of milk in a cup. When we realized that they were stuck on "milk in a bottle," after we had done away with bottles, we decided to offer other versions of milk in a cup....like chocolate milk, or the danimals (just stick a straw thru the top). Those were novelities to the boys. But after a while, they figured out that these drinks were just different versions of the milk they drank as toddlers. And now (with one being 4 ys and the older being 6 yrs) they readily accept plain white cold milk in a cup....with or without straw. There is no formula that will work for everyone. The babies were used to having nice warm milk in a bottle...and cold milk in a cup is so different....just ease your daughter into it.

Take care,
A.

They don't really need milk at this age so don't sweat it. I give mine both cups and sippy cups. She is able to use a cup, though she loves to spill the contents of it. Still, she is capable of using a cup, you may want to try that.

At two she doesn't really NEED milk, or a bottle. Throw the bottles away, and when she asks for it say, sorry honey the bottles are all gone, and offer her some milk in a cup. If she still wants the milk she will get used to having it in a cup, and if not she can just have water :)

My daughter had milk in a bottle once a day, and used regular cups, not sippy cups, at meal times until she was three. A few days before she turned three, I told her that 3 year-olds didn't need bottles, she agreed and that was that. It worked for us.

Do whatever works for you and don't make this a battle. As others said, milk is not actually a requirement at this age. Calcium comes from many sourced, increase those in her diet.
