2 Year Old Had 2 Front Teeth Removed- Any Experience with Pedia-Partials?

Has anyone had to have their children's front teeth removed? My daughter fell in November and chipped her front tooth. The one next to it, and the originally injured one, both started turning gray. We went in last week to have a pulpectomy and 2 white crowns put on. During the surgery at Children's, they ended up having to remove the teeth because they were too damaged.
I was mortified at first. I couldn't imagine them having to remove her teeth from a little fall. I have almost come to terms with it, but sometimes I get this overwhelming feeling that children will make fun of her when she gets a little older. We have the option to do a Pedia-Partial after her molars come in. Has anyone had this done? I heard that sometimes the kids can remove it themselves...which does not sound good. Does it look natural? Part of me doesn't want her to go through any more trauma at such a young age with the procedure, but then the other part is concerned about kids teasing her for not having teeth. Any suggestions or previous experience would be greatly appreciated!

Hi M.,
When I was a child way back before they had Pedia-Partials, I had a calcium deficiency due to severe milk allergies and my front 4 teeth crumbled out. They didnt have great options then and I was fitted with 4 stainless steel teeth. Yes I looked like cojack but the doctors said I would not learn how to speak and pronounce my words correctly without the teeth. I WAS teased (primarily from my sister) but definitely not traumatized. It all worked out in the end and I really have no recollection of being different.

Good Luck!
E.

Please tell me what how this came out. I am sitting in the waiting area in tears because they just came and told me that they can not repair his teeth that they need extracting. I am mortified and literally in tears. I was so devastated that they told me about the Pedia Partial. Like you, I am worried about him being made fun of.

My 4yr son just had all 4 front teeth removed in May. Our situation was pretty similar to yours. He chipped one of his teeth and it spread to the other teeth next to it. It took me months to see a doctor, because of insurance changing, but anyways i was afraid that kids would make fun of him also, but my son has been doing really well. He will not get his teeth for another 2yrs. It depends on each individual kid. But there has been plenty of kids that would ask him what happened to his teeth, and he would simply just simile.

Hi M.,

I have a three year old boy who fell and we had to have a tooth removed. I was really worried about what he would look like and if other kids would notice. But... I am the only one bothered about his missing tooth. No one, not even adults have made any comments about the absent tooth. He was two when it happened so we've been dealing with it for a while. I have a friend who is a dentist and she really encouraged me NOT to get a partial, because kids can sometimes remove them.

I hope this sort of helped...

I've had two children who attended my child care group who had accidents at home that required their front teeth being removed. One had partials the other didn't. Neither had any problems. One has recently outgrown the partial because her permanent teeth began to push through and the partial was removed.

The other child's mother felt she was close enough in age to losing the baby teeth that the partials wouldn't be necessary. No one even mentioned the empty spaces. I think kids are used to seeing other children with missing teeth because they learn early that they will evenutally lose their baby teeth and will be visited by a tooth fairy. You'd probably be surprised at how many children damage their front teeth at your child's age. She'll do just fine and dandy; unless you let her know about your concerns.

My niece had to have her front two teeth removed at 2 years old because he baby teeth were very small and never grew in all the way. Her dentist encouraged partials for speech reasons and so that her teeth would not shift.

I say if you can afford it or if your insurance covers it...get them. Kids can be cruel at any age.

My daughter had the same thing happen when she was 3. She was not teased by anyone (except her Grandpa who told her when she kisses boys, her teeth will fall out) He told her she was kissing to many boys. LOL
It took a long time for her teeth to grow back in. Although alot of kids start losing thier teeth by the time they start school. My nephew is 4 and already lost his tooth. Any way my daughter is not 18, and it's fun to look at her cute pictures with her toothless smile. I personally would not worry about getting her partials. She has already gone threw enough drama!
Good Luck!

My daughter had to have one partial for one of her front teeth when she was around 4. She had damaged one (we still don't know how!) so it had to be pulled. Not only was I concerned about her being teased about it, but her dentist told me that he thought it was necessary because it would prevent her other teeth from shifting. She wore it until it was time for her baby teeth in the front to come out - about 6 and a half or so.

It looked pretty natural, but was a tad "blue-gray" in color. But, most people didn't notice until I pointed it out. It is possible that they can pull it out on their own! My daughter stuck a toy in her mouth and it got stuck on the wire of her partial and pulled it almost all the way out. However, we were able to put it back in with no problem. Your little one will have to stay away from all sticky foods (fruit snacks, gum, taffy, caramels, etc.), but it wasn't a big deal. It was worth it.

Hope this helps!

My question to the other reponses would be how old is the average child when they start to loose their teeth? My 4 yr ould son still has all his baby teeth and so do all his friends. I always understood that kids dont loose their baby teath till they are 6-7 yrs old! Thats quite a long time to go with out your 2 front teeth. Especially in such pivital developmental years too.

I would think that parents would naturally not say anything simply out of courtesy. As for kids, they tend to be quite cruel to their peers and dont allways have good discretion.

I would check into the possibility of insurance helping out and have the partials done for both speach and self esteem reasons.

Hi M.,
i just read your message and wanted to say that my daughter was 4 when she fell from one of those bouncy things on the playground and they have removed all her 4 upper teeth plus had to saw her lip. Anyway, we did not get the partials because her speech was already developed and the specialist doc at Childrens' did not recommended it. Katia did great without her teeth, she was not teased by kids, she learned how to eat apple using her mollars, it was just no problem at all. Her first permanent tooth started growing when she was 5, now by the age of 6 her three teeth have grown and the fourth one is half way through.
So I would be only concerned about her speech development, otherwise we the moms are more worried than the kids.
Good luck!
Sincerely,
L.
