12 Mo Old Abruptly Weaned and Won't Drink Milk or Formula

My son will be 12 mo's next week. While having a cold with severe congestion 2 weeks ago he refused to breastfeed and now my milk has dried up. He refuses whole milk and formula, and only drinks water from a sippy cup. I'm concerned he's not getting enough calories without the milk, in addition to calcium etc. Any ideas on how to get him to drink milk?

What can I do next?

I agree with what the other moms said about a baby not needing cows milk however if you want to continue to try introducing it to him try watering it down a bit. Cows milk is much more concentrated than the human milk he's use to. Baby cows grow a lot faster than baby humans so their milk needs more neutrieants in it.

good luck.

Try goat's milk. You can get it at some grocery stores (like Trader Joe's) and the health food store. It's what I drank as a toddler for exactly the same reason, I wouldn't take cows milk or formula. The doctor told my mom to try and it worked. A goat is a closer size to a human so I think the milk must be closer (like in terms of fat and sugar content). Whatever the reason, some kids like it, so give it a try.

Hi A.,

I have a 23 month old and at 15 months we took all bottles away and she did not want to drink milk again. I tried everything. I talked to the doctor and he said as long as she was getting her calcium other ways that it was good. Also he told me to get a multi-vitamin for her and too take half everyday. My daughter eats a lot of vetables and fruits and good healthy stuff, so she gets her calcium intake. She drinks water and juice with water also. The appropriate ounces allowed. Also now she has started to like chocolate milk with 1%. I remember trying everything at that time and she just refused. I would talk to your doctor and see what he says to you. My doctor is really good. Usually they can help also. Try putting maybe some ovaltine also, or little chocolate, or strawberry syrup to make it taste better. Hope this helps.

My youngest refused milk for months. The doctor told me as long as she was eating other dairy, cottage cheese, yogurt, cheese, and leafy greens, she did not need milk. We could keep offerring it and evenetually she would drink it. It took about 4 months, but she does drink milk now and actually asks for it sometimes. As far as calories are concerned, just make sure you are offerring him a variety of foods and don't worry about day to day, but look at what he is eating at over the course of a week. It is normal for kids his age to eat well one day, and nothing the next. As long as it is balancing out he is fine.

My daughter took about a week and a half to accept Cow's milk. She was drinking regular formula until 12 months old. I had to mix a little milk with formula and eventually start to reduce the amount of formula each day. She had huge tantrums at 1st, but now she loves her milk and most kids do. I think babies definitely should be drinking Cow's milk and it is recommended by the AAP and most pediatricians. I think it takes a while for babies to accept new things, but I wouldn't give up on it yet.

A.,
My youngest who is now 8 weaned herself when she was about 1 year old and will not drink any milk at all. It is so bad that if you try and make her she starts vomitting. We have tried Soy, Rice, flavored cows milk, nothing. Her Dr says as long as she is getting calcium through other things it is not a problem, she does eat chesse, yogurt, nuts etc as well as her multi viatmin that has extra calcuim. (she doens't eat milk based ice cream either), but has not problems with milk, because she can eat foods that have dairy in them, she just doesn't like the taste or texture of liquid milk. I would have a talk with your sons doctor and they can give you a list of other foods to make sure he gets the vitamins and diary fat that he needs. But a child does not need to drink milk to be heathly.
Good luck
Amanda

There are other sources of calcium. Don't be fooled in to thinking that this is the only source of calcium. Worse comes to worse... go the health food store and get a child's calcium supplement.
