1 Year Old's Constipation

I've tried almost everything I can think of for my daughter's constipation. Prunes (she wouldn't eat a lot), extra water, cutting out dairy (except milk) and anything else I can think of that will be a cause of the constipation. I also tried spinach (wouldn't eat it) and peas. I also read and heard from my sister that a rectal thermometer could stimulate it, but nothing. I did put some Caro Syrup in her bottle and we'll see if anything happens tonight, but if not I would like some other options. The only other option I can think of is Miralax. I'm not opposed to giving it to her, but I was wondering if there is anything else I can try first, and a lot of accounts I hear of people using Miralax is that they use it for the long term. This is only her second bout of constipation so I don't think I need anything long term, just something to clear her up now. She doesn't seem to be in any distress. She is the same happy baby she always is. I can see her trying to push, but when it won't come out, she just goes on with her playing. Am I missing something or should I give her the Miralax?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I finally gave her the Miralax, she poops 10 minutes later, so I'm pretty sure the Miralax hadn't kicked in yet, but I'm glad she finally went. Thanks for all the responses, they were very helpful. Sometimes, I don't know what I would do without this site.

I would definatly try Miralax. It's orderless, taseless and non-habit forming. I have used it off and on over the years for my now 6yr daughter. My pediatrician suggested it and I have been very happy with it. Hope this helps :-)

I know this topic way to well. Have you tried giving her about 4-6 oz of adult strength juice? Doesn't look like your daughter has had this issue a lot or else I would have some more suggestions. If the juice doesn't work I would try the Miralax. My daughter is 16 months and she takes 1/4 capfuil or miralax everyday (he's was a constant issue). I just put it in a cup of milk. I was very hesistant about doing this but my pedi assured me it isn't habit forming and simply makes your digestive system produce more water so you can poop. Also maybe try pumping or bicycling her legs.

i see that you gave her prunes to eat but try giving her prune juice. either gerber punre juice or the kind in the dark bottle and yellow label( can't seem to call the name of hand right now). and maybe a small supository. they have infant's but they are kind of big in my opinion so i just break it in half and but a little ky jelly on it and go for it. hope this helps. good luck.

My 16 month old gets this often too. I give her cut up apples and pears, rasins and prunes.

try giving her campbells soup for lunch..but add some veggies... i would buy baby food veggies and mix them in... like the stage 1.. mix the whole jar into the soup... it helps.. also make pancakes only add all the stuff you are suposed to.. and then add one jar of baby applesauce.. this will help too. give her some cheerios.. the whole grain ones are good. they have baby glycerin suppositories .. they work really well. give her some frozen peas on a plate... baby spinach is good to hide in foods too... good luck
