Ive got this amazing job offer in San Fransisco, California. Its a stylist job for a tv show. (I wish I could tell you more, but I cant :( sorry!!) The Pros and Cons; Pros: Im used to the area, I grew up in California and around San Fransisco, Im closer to family, and my daughter is closer to her dad. Cons: Ive just got married, I have two, three month olds, my husband would need a job, and its the middle of the school year for my daughter. She has friends in San Fransisco, but Im just worried that my husband would be jobless for a while. Im debating on moving my family with me, but with Christmas coming up, and I would like to buy a new house, it doesnt really sound like a smart move. The pay is better, and in San Fransisco/ LA area it would really boost up my chance to get a promotion. We are ready financially to buy a house, but another worry is if it would sell good in a short amount of time. Help please!! I would like to know your opinion!

What can I do next?

How long is the job for? Will you just work for this TV show or others? Compare the cost of living in GA to CA and will it work? What does your husband do? Will he be able to get work?

Personally I would move but I would rent for a bit to find out what the market is and then buy a house. Homeownership is a big responsibility and sometimes things don't sell when you want.

Your daughter will survive the change and she will make new friends. Is there a child care place near where you would work to care for your younger children?

Every move is an adventure or a new chapter in the book of life. As a military wife moving was part of the package and you adjusted and sometmes looked forward to moving to the next base/post.

Good luck to you.

Can your family afford your husband to be out of work for a period of time and survive? Cost of living in California is very expensive, especially in SF. I would do a spread sheet and put in what it would cost to live in California and then put your expenses of where you are currently living which looks like Georgia.

While your salary would increase, you need to take into account living expenses, your husband being unemployed, would your daughter go to public or private schools in SF? Who would watch the babies while you are working? Just because you get a larger salary doesn't mean you are making more money at the end of the month.

In the end, what does your husband think?

To answer your question, yes I would move my family for a job offer. I moved all my life with my parents and with my husband. Its an adventure!

Congrats on the offer! Go you!!!!

I have already done that --last year. But only after finding a suitable job for my husband. It also very much depends on how long-term and stable this job is. I would not move for a job whose future is not guaranteed, at least for several years... You should also very carefully think about whether the increase in pay will compensate for the higher cost of living in SF.

About the kids: Kids are much more resilient than we think, especially at young ages. It would be harder for a high schooler to move, but younger kids will be fine.

About the housing: If you cannot sell the house in time, you can always rent (and you can maybe rent your house in GA until it is sold). This will give you time to learn more about the possible neighborhoods, the market, and find a nice house and a good deal...

Good luck with your decision!

You are taking the right steps by weighing the pros and cons. I think the biggest con is the cost of living in SF! We have lived many places due to job moves, but SF is definitely up there as highest cost of living! You are going to have major price shock on everything coming from GA. The biggest pro is the boost in promotion chances. I think what would determine it for me is the stability of the job you are moving for and whether you can truly afford housing in SF.

I would and I've done it and will probably do it again. It isn't a decision you can make by yourself though. My husband and I have to negotiate and decide what makes sense for both of us. Can you husband find a job there? Is the cost of living worth it? For a great opportunity with lots of future potential - well, that would be hard to turn down unless my husband couldn't find work there. Yes, your husband might be jobless for awhile. Unfortunately it is difficult to line both jobs up perfectly, but as long as there are good options there it can be ok.
