Wii and Guitar Hero

Hi moms,

My question is for you moms out there with video game children;
My children want the Wii game system with the Guitar Hero game for Christmas. I know absolutely nothing about these video games. I've been online and there are several different guitar hero games. Which one is the latest version? Do I need to purchase more than one guitar? Can this be played as a multiple player game? What are the "bundle guitar hero" games? Does that just mean it includes the guitar?

Also, do you recommend purchasing an extra remote. My girlfriend told me that she was pretty sure you couldn't play two player games unless you had two remotes. I guess that makes sense. But I'd hate to purchase an extra one (Target $40.00!) if it's not needed.

My kids are terrific. They do great in school and they're very active. I understand that video games aren't the best thing for them. But they really want this and I feel that they deserve it. They will not be allowed to turn into video game junkies. So if any of you could educate me on this game system and the guitar hero game itself, I'd greatly appreciate it.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks moms! Your advice was terrific. My dad bought the Wii for the kids and Santa bought everything they'd need to have a great time playing it (including Guitar Hero, an extra guitar and an extra Wii remote). The kids absolutely love it! I've never witnessed ONE particular gift getting so much use. Even mom and dad love it. I bought Wii Fit for hubby and we all have been having a great time with it. I was worried about spending our entire Christmas budget on one "video game" and accessories. However, it was money well spent. The only drawback (not really), is that my husband and I are sooooo sore from tennis!

Thanks again for the great advice.

I have Wii (not Guitar hero though)... I have always been against video games but this one is a little diff so I gave in to my bf and kids ( 5 and 3 yo daughters). And they love it...they games that they play have them actually moving and not just sitting on their butts so I am ok with it. i have actually played it and found it to be fun. You can play it with just one controller but then you have to share and cant play the games against one another so I do reccommend having two. It is worth it!

It will probably be pretty hard to find a Wii at this time, but I do know that Costco sells them. If you don't have a membership maybe a friend or someone you know does and you could have them get it for you. They had quite a few last week, but I do know that they get shipments quite a bit. You could always call first.
Good Luck!

Hey J.,

I bought my son DJ a WII system at 12months old. He has learned to bowl, swing his custom gold club and a baseball bat, and dance. I know it may seem a little young to start him with video games but it has helped his eye/hand coordination, his ability to share, and his ability to follow directions. When I tell you he can swing and his follow through is near perfect it's amazing. I also got my sister and brothers kids a WII system. They love it, they play guitar hero, and yes you do need the extra remote. Each kid actually needs their own remote to keep down confusion with other games. Many of the games allow for four players, and trust me your 1 year old will want to play too.

The basic Wii system comes with Wii sports, one remote, and one nunchuck. Your kids will like Wii sports too and it will keep them active. You don't have to get a second remote, but I would highly recommend getting Wii play which comes with a game and remote for $50. After you have used it for a while you can decide if you really need more remotes or nunchucks. Many of the games don't need a nunchuck. I am not familiar with Guitar Hero, but I do recommend using recharable batteries (skip the Wii recharging system that you can buy) and also make sure you have lots of room to play the games. Have fun - I bet even if you are not at all into video games (like me) you will end up trying it too!

I don't know a ton about it but just an FYI I saw a bunch of knock off accessories at Kaybee toys in Grandville. They had the steering wheel for Mario Cart and Sports packs. I don't know if they had a guitar or not. Might be worth checking out.

I totally recommend the Wii. It is family fun. You will find you enjoy it too. The guitar hero world tour comes with two guitars. I recommend the guitar hero with drums and mike and cymbals. It si brand new and I dont know if they make it for Wii yet. We have the old rock band and have a blast with it. (my husband and I) But they are so much better now. Also you will need more than one remote, especially if the kids want to play at the same time. There is a wii sports bundle game that comes with an extra remote. You get game and remote for $50.00 so it is really worth it. The wii sport games are really fun too. They are our favorite. I really enjoyed mario galaxy.

I was a non video game Mom for years, but last Thanksgiving we got a Wii. It's a great system. It comes with some basic games, so be aware of that. I would recommend and additional remote. The price never changes but sometimes they put other items with it to promote them. Choose guitar hero for the songs included. Be aware that some of the songs are hard rock songs that are very popular, but it is rated teen because of the sexual content. My kids were 11,9 and 7 when we got it and I forgot some of the lyric. It is a great way to keep them active and they also encourage all types of interests including fishing, dancing etc. Definitely a good buy. We have a Wii bowling tournament when family comes over. Grandma is a real hit!

We have had the wii for over a year now my kids have way too
many games to count and play it everyday The newest guitar hero is World Tour The one bundle comes with a guitar and the game itself or the full set comes with the newest guitar, drums, game and microphone You will need 2 guitars to battle against eachother I would reccomend buying the "wii Play" game it is $50.00 and it comes with a wii remote and a game Two remotes will suffice for now you just have to switch remotes when it's another players turn We have bowling tournaments all the time with our kids My youngest always beats me! My kids love Mario Kart and Rock Band too Rock Band comes with drums, guitar and microphone so 3 people can play at once or 4 if you have another guitar It's quit a scene to see four kids being a rock band together! (I have also seen bad reviews for the guitar hero full world tour set saying it doesn't compare to Rock Band which is much better) They also like to do the wii physical fitness test wich gives your 'sports age' You also need the nunchuck controller for certain games It attaches to the regular controller for boxing Walmart has bundles right now online for 399.00 with 2 games, an extra controller and you can add accessories

She realizes she has a slower metabolism. My girlfriend had bought one for her kids (the father bought one also) so they are going to sell one. Hi, I tried looking at all your response and don't know if anyone told you this yet, but we have a place here in Lansing called Gamestop. They sell used game systems and games and we have great success. They do still have some guarantee's if something doesn't work. We had to buy the WII new, as it was almost impossible to find a used one, everyone loves them so much! My husband has bought several different games for the WII here and we haven't had a problem. I even had a friend beat a game in three days and they let her exchange it! As far as Guitar Hero, I know they did have a few used ones for a good price.

Good Luck

I had to wait till my 14-year-old got home from school to help you with this one. Him and my 11-year-old love Guitar Hero. So here it is - the latest Guitar Hero is World Tour for all systems. My son would recommend just buying one guitar as the kids can switch off. You should get two remotes though so that the kids can play other games together. Hope that helps - Alison

As far as the remotes go for the Wii, you will need an extra remote if you will have more than one person playing at a time. When we had a Wii we had to get an extra remote and nun-chuck or whatever it was. For Guitar Hero, the bundle should include the game and guitar. I don't know if it has a mode for two people to play against each other, if so you'd need another guitar. The Wii system itself isn't extremely expensive. But once you buy the extra remotes, cables to hook it up, games, etc, you've spent a ton of money!! Good luck.

My son is too young, but I play Guitar Hero all the time. There are two basic games; Guitar Hero and Rock Band. The difference has been that Guitar Hero was only guitar playing, while Rock Band has drums, guitars, and a singer. The latest GH game (World Tour) has all the same equipment as RB. A bundle would get you the equipment (drums, guitar, etc) in addition to the Wii system - they are often better deals. Not sure about the controller issue... good luck!

It's hard to figure out just what to get, even when you know what you're looking for. My family just got the Guitar Hero game and I will tell you that for hand eye practice it's great and fun and entertaining. I was worried that the people not playing would feel left out, so not the case. We got ours at Sam's Club for $108 (included 2 guitar remotes) but they do have the whole 'band' (1 guitar, mic, drums) for $250 online. Check out RedOctane online for any questions you have, that's where I found most of my info.

The wii is great. I HATED video games before we got our wii. It's completely different than any other game system, my 4 year old daughter plays it and also my 60 year old father! It's a ton of fun for every age! I definately would get another wiimote, I'd recommend wii play as it comes with a game and a controller for $50 and it's tons of fun.

As for guitar hero, I'd go with world tour, the newest version. It's similar to rock band and I've only heard good things about it. It's pretty hard to find though. As for games Keep an eye on the toys r us ads, alot of the time they have buy 2 games get 1 free type deals.

My husband and I own a Wii and we really enjoy it (our daughter is too little to play). I like it because it seems like there are a lot of family friendly games to play and up to 4 people can play many of the games. I like this because it seems with other gaming systems out there only 2 people can play and others just watch. The Guitar Hero game is pretty cool too (it is one we own as well). More than one person can play at a time, however you do need more than one guitar. I am pretty sure the "bundle" includes a guitar too. I know "World Tour" is about to come out and "Aerosmith" just came out. We have "Aerosmith" and "Guitar Hero II".

You asked about a second remote, and I would highly recommend it. Actually you will need a remote and a nunchuck. Many games will take both. I have found that Best Buy does a great job in answering any questions you may have, but I know the importance of price comparing. Maybe get the info you need there, but purchase it where you found the better price.

I hope this helps.

J.,

If you are going to get guitar hero I would recommended getting two guitars so they can play against each other. Once you have the guitars you can pick up any of the games. I do not have guitar hero for WII even though we own wII. My kids got the guitar hero for play station II last Christmas. We could not find the Wii until the end of January. My kids bought it with there own Christmas money. I got the Guitar hero in a bundle package at target. for $89.99 It came with two guitars and the game. I think the most current game is Aero Smith but I might be wrong because several games has just recently been released. You also have the option of getting wireless guitars. I went with plug in kind because it was cheaper and my kids are always complaining about there wireless control. Hope this helps.

Mine got their WII last year and love it. The family has had games at the holiday's where most are involved. With the Guitar hereo we only have one guitar at this point in time, but will probably get another one in the future. We do have 4 remotes because of those who play in the house.

As for the remotes, you can play a bunch of the games with one remote, but there are games out there where you can play up to 8 people at one time and if you want to play head to head boxing or tennis you have to have 2 remotes. Any of the games were you are in direct compition you would need an extra remote. The nice thing about the WII is you can take your remote and play with another WII game system. So as I said for holiday's one of the kids brings the WII and the rest just bring a remote and a game. This way we have plenty when the whole family (12 grandchildren 20 people) gets invovled. Also when the kids have sleepovers their friends can bring thiers and we don't have to have extra.

Good luck

Forgot I thing...check out the differant stores on prices and check out Game Stop and Game Crazy for games and controllers. Sometimes you can get lucky and find a used controller and Numchuck...yes you need a set of both for some games. I'ld get the used games, they can sometimes save a you lot of money.

So, at least three people can play at the same time. We have spend countless hours with all of us playing. Including me!! It's a blast and fun quality family time together!!

Hi J.,

The bundle pack is usually 1 guitar and the game. If they want to play together you'd have to purchase another guitar. We have 1,2 and 3 but I'm pretty sure more have come out - we have it for PS2 and haven't played it in a while.

As for the Wii remotem we can play most games w/ 1 remote. But we have to pass it back and forth which really loses the momentum of the game. I would def get a second wii remote. Much more fun.

Hi J.

We had Guitar Hero for our Play Station2 before we got our Wii.
Absolutely get 2 guitars no matter how you get your system. It makes it so much fun to compete. My husband and I like it just as much as our kids. Beware...it gets addictive.
Sounds like the newest version World Tour would be the way to go since it comes with all the instruments (though you still may need a 2nd guitar). The drums are a riot. Also, it looks like it has the best options for songs/variety compared to the older versions.
Have fun!

For more than one to play guitar hero at a time, you would need the the same number of remotes as guitars. So if you have 2 players to play together, you need 2 remotes and 2 guitars. World Tour is the new one that is out for guitar Hero. If they have friends with Wii guitar hero, then often the friends can bring their guitars.

Im not sure about them game and bundles but my uncle has a wii system and they have the one games that has like bowling, boxing and a couple of other games on there. they have one of the regular remotes the long skinny ones. when we go over there to play bowling we have multiple players we just take turns using the remote, pass it on to someone else when your done with it. i would check into that because if you can do it with the other games it would be pointless to spend that much on another remote but you need to check they may not all be like that.

I recommend the Wii. My 5 year old loves it, and it keeps him active in the winter. If you have multiple kids using it, I strongly recommend having at least 2 remotes, if not 3. In addition to guitar hero, I would make sure that your Wii comes with Wii Sports. The kids will love the live action of being able to play baseball, tennis, golf, boxing, etc. You will also need numchucks for eash remote you have. Enjoy!

I faught my husband on the WII this year. I wanted it last year and he said no. Well this year we needed to get them one big item because of economic difficulties. Let me tell you it will be the best thing. I aqm so glad they made a game like this I don't like x-box or any of the other because you cannot be active with them you sit with a remote and become a couch potatoe. But with the WII you are interactive with it if you aren't you can't play.I don't know two much about it but I do know you need more than one remote because you can play up to 4 or more people at a time. But witht he guitar hero I would wait to see if its on sale any where a couple months ago toys rus had all assesories and games for a good deal. So keep looking for that too. I would get one guitar hero now and maybe another later its kinda expensive. Thats the only thing my husbands pet peeve is about it is its so expensive. Plus I am a mother of 4 and wanting another I want it for the excersize mate. take care best of luck!!!

I am 22 and I love the Wii and guitar hero, though i've never played guitar hero on wii. You will need as many remotes as you want kids playing and im sure you need guitars which you again need as many as you have kids playing. You can always go to game stop and see if you can find these items used that way they are cheaper. (they come with warenties still and still work fine. and your kids are not going to care if it is brand new or not they will just be thankful they have it. There are several versions of guitar hero out there. the latest i do believe is Guitar Hero Three. Just pick the version you would like to buy them and buy it. They give you a list of some of the songs on there they they can learn to play. So you know I am a big fan of the Wii. as long as it is used right you can be very active with it. I would recomend Wii Sports, I love that one. It makes you get up and move at least a little bit. Good luck!

I have a better suggestion. We have a Wii, and we have both guitar hero and rock band. (PS...mom loves the game too!)
I would recommend rock band over guitar hero. Guitar hero is great, I love it...but rock band gets EVERYONE involved! It's so much fun! One person plays the guitar, another sings, and another plays the drums. If you buy another guitar, a 4th person can play guitar or bass. Or...if just one person wants to play, they can...they just pick which instrument they want and they play. So it's kinda of like having Guitar Hero too, ya know?
It's a little pricey...but well worth it, since it gets everyone together. My 15 year old usually invites over a friend, and my 8 year old will join in and sing! so cute!

I prefer the Wii game system over the others, because you actually have to get up and be active with most of the games. It usually comes with the Wii sports package, which is bowling, baseball, tennis, etc. Very fun for the whole family!!! The extra remote is worth it, get it...head to head games like tennis and baseball can be played that way.
Not sure if your kids are girls or boys, but if they are girls...the hannah montana game is my 8 year old's favorite!

And yes...the bundle game means it comes with the guitar. to do head to head battles, you need 2 guitars (remotes)

J., i am a mom of 3 kids, and they do own the wii, and they have played guitar hero, i did not buy these systems, however my oldest son, is 20 and he bought the wii, the wii is a lot of fun, and very fun for adults too, no you do not have to buy more joysticks, there are settings to play 4 player games, with one joystick, however you will have to share, so it does work and we have never had any issues of them not wanting to hand it over so the other player can use it and take their turn, they readily hand it over, it does require you use the wrist strap, so the remote does get thrown in fun games such as bowling and tennis or baseball, and more, so buying another remote just means you dont have to undo the wrist strap, which takes seconds, and hand it off to another, however with four players, you will passing it around anyway, its great to play with the family and others, and just making your character can also be fun and enjoyable, there are many things the wii can do, it can hook to the internet, with parent control, and you can send messages and play games, with your other freinds with a wii too, or it can play alone, with up to four players and one joystick, it is a great game, !!! guitar hero, not sure the purchase thing on it, as an adult, my kids loved it, when a freind of ours had one andlet us have it at our house for a while, he had one guitar, they shared, but it was also very fun to buy the extra guitar, so two could play together, and against each other, however to me, i did not appreciate some of the song, and the backgrounds were mostly of skulls and rock stages, if this does not bother you , then yes its a great game, my youngest son loved it and got really good, they all got good, i even started my own band on it, and it takes you slow through the songs, with easy , med hard levels, even on easy , was fun and we all enjoyed all of us playing, so sorry i do not know the purchasing details of guitar hero i would think you would have to read the box, one guitar is nice, and i do believe it comes with one, but the two guitars was even more nicer, so yeah the wii is great, no you dont need more joysticks, guitar hero is also very fun, some strange graphics, and hard rock songs, and no you dont need another guitar but would be better with two, for more competitition, however we did have a bit more fights with the guitar hero, and one guitar, any way if you have any more questions i would be glad to answer them, my kids might know more buying information, when they are home, D. s , feel free to write and get more info im sure my kids would love to give you their input, enjoy life, D. s ps. i forgot some games you play or buy for the wii you may need more than one remote, like tennis if you play with someone else who has to play at the same time, you will need more remotes, but i do believe the games that come with the wii, only needs one remote, bowling you take turns, so does baseball, so you can share, most games will show one or more remotes on the box if you need to play with more, but to just buy the wii, you should be fine, till you buy more games, D. s

The Wii is awesome!!!! Good luck finding one for your children for Christmas because they are still hard to find and will only get harder!

I've owned my Wii now for about 9 months and usually I'm the only one playing, however I still own 3 remotes. It's always better if you have multiple players to have multiple remotes.

For games, Guitar Hero is so much fun, and your kids will love it when they play together. The Guitar Hero name just released "Guitar Hero World Tour" which is similar to Rock Band. It allows a Bassist and Drummer to go with the Guitar, so more than 1 person can play.

You'll want to get at least 1 additional guitar for your kids. On most of those games they can play multiple players.

More games that will be so much fun for your family is Wii Fit (great for mom's & dad's too), or "Outdoor Challenge" which I've heard is an absolute "hoot" of a time!!

Personally I own Super Mario Galaxy, Wii Play, Big Brain Academy (not so fun), Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, and the Wii Fit.

Ooh... Another great game for kids is Mario Kart.

Also, check out Amazon. There is still plenty of time before Christmas, they have a 'Game of the Day" deal, and earlier last week they had Guitar Hero Aerosmith for only 20 bucks!

Have fun!!!!

The latest version of Guitar Hero, is Guitar Hero World Tour. The newest one includes drums, guitar, and the microphone.
The difference between the guitar Hero Bundles, is what is included in them. If you buy the bundle it includes all the
instruments listed above. (Average price I've seen is about $190) But if you buy the game separately, it wont come with any
instruments. Another option is to buy the game and the instruments you want separately. (Could cost more) This game is meant
to be played with more than one person, so it would be a safe buy there. I do not believe another remote (Or Wiimote as it is
referred to for the Wii) is necessary, but it wouldn't hurt to get another one. Hopefully I answered all of your questions
