Hi Moms!
I really need your help! I have this weird feeling, like something is stuck in my throat. It feels like a hair - but it has been there for A WEEK! I cannot take it anymore. Nothing I have tried is working. My husband looked in my throat with a floshlight and saw nothing. eating or drinking doesn't get rid of it. I have even vomited and I cannot get whatever is in there out. I have an appointment to see the doctor tomorrow afternoon. I am worried that this is something serious. Have any of you ever had something like this last so long?
Thanks for any advice!
A.

So What Happened?

Hi everyone! Thanks so much for all of your responses! I went to the doctor yesterday and she said that my throat did not have anything stuck in it - it was swollen glands and my ears were so full of fluid they were buldging! It is funny becuase i did not have any ear symptoms at all. She gave me a nasal spray and some allergy medicine. I am already starting to feel better!! After reading everyone's responses, I was sure that I had the tonsil stones, except that I don't have any tonsils! So the Dr. said it couldn't possibly be that.
All in all I am very relieved that I went to the doctor and got it figured out!
Thanks again for all of your wisdom!

My husband had an abscess near his tonsils and he had to go to an ENT to have it drained. It was a fluke-thing and must have been developing for quite a while before it became painful and swollen. If he hadn't gone to the doctor to have it looked at, the doctor told him his throat could have swollen and blocked his airway... don't mean to scare you but you should have it checked.

My mom just had the same symptoms and it was a bacterial infection in her throat. Just get it checked out, I'm sure everything will be just fine.

Twice I had a weird feeling in my throat, but it felt more like a lump not a hair. Turned out that there was inflammation from stress and a round of steroids got rid of it both times.

I had this once and it turned out to be acid reflux. My esophagus was being burned by stomach acid down by my stomach but I was feeling it like I had something in my throat that I could not swallow. I went to my doctor thinking my thyroid was becoming enlarged or something. He took a look down my throat with a scope and could see where the acid had irritated things. And I had no burning feeling at all. A few weeks on Prilosec and it was all cleared up.

hi A., the only similar thing I heard of is an infection with e-coli, that normally gets in the intestine and gives you diarrhea but in the (rare)case of a friend of mine it got in her throath and she described it just like you do. i remember she also told me she felt overall weird and maybe her ear was also bothering her (but her ear was ok)..she also developed fever at some point. she is taking antibiotics and a steroid for the swelling and she should be ok soon.Good idea to go to the doctor, perhaps he'll swab your throath and send it to the lab for testing. Good luck!

I think the tonsil stone people are right on the money but I never knew it was called that. My Dad and I both have sinus issues and we attributed them to that so I thought of them as "sinus balls." Yucky I know. But it is disgusting. It might feel like a popcorn kernel back there and it is hard to see. You might be able to feel them with your finger or a Q-tip if you can get back there - its sort of hard to do. Once you do it, its easier though - you just have to figure it out. Note that if this is what it is, its nothing serious at all - just annoying and gross. Good luck!

Sounds like tonsil stones. Debris builds up & gets stuck in the pockets of the tonsils. Gargling with warm water and sea salt and/or hydrogen peroxide helps loosen them.
Avoiding eating white flour and white sugar helps. Also brushing twice a day, regular gargling and flossing keeps them from forming.

I know it sounds weird, but it might be heartburn or acid reflux. I've had it happen like that where it feels like something is stuck right at the top of my throat (like the size of a pea) and I couldn't make it go away. Vomitting seemed to make it go away temporarily, but it always came back. I went to my OB (I'm currently pregnant) who said that it was acid reflux. He prescribed meds and I've not had the problem since. However, still follow up with your doc to make sure its not something more serious.

do you have kids? Have they been exposed to hand foot and mouth disease? When my kids came down with it the only symptom I got was it felt like a popcorn kernel was stuck in my throat. It was annoying, very annoying. But it could be a possiblity of your symptom. Hope all goes well and you get that feeling out.

This sounds like an unpleasant and annoying little condition known as cyptic tonsils (AKA tonsil stones). It can feel like something is stuck in your throat when its really gooey white stuff (food/debris) stuck in the folds of your tonsils. Try to examine your tonsils with a tongue depressor (watch out for the gag reflex). I have had this for many years. I have seen an ENT who basically said you have to learn to live with it. I get periodic flare-ups but have learned to dislodge the stones gaining relief. Gross I know!

Good luck! Let us know what happens.
