Why Not Celebrate Halloween?

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. I love the decor, the weather and costumes. Man I LOVE costumes! I know there have been a few posts of parents upset that schools no longer celebrate Halloween in the classroom. And many people felt like it was the school being PC. I know a few people who don't celebrate, but I never asked why. So I am curious, why don't some of you celebrate Halloween? I'd just like to hear the other side. Thanks mamas!

What can I do next?

Good question...because they don't research it and find out it's origins. Or it's just something they don't like.

My best friend HATES Halloween...why? Because when she was young, someone scared her with a scary costume - it stuck in her head and to this day - cannot celebrate Halloween...her husband had to take care of the kids costumes and such for Halloween...

Some think it's just another way to get people to spend money on things we don't need...

Halloween is SUPPOSED to be All-Hallows-Eve - the celebration of the lives of the dead...it's just been twisted over the years...but like Beth said - most are uninformed...

Some people don't celebrate Halloween because they are uninformed of the origin of the holiday and the traditions surrounding it.
My mother was one of those people.

ETA- I'm sorry but Halloween or All Hallows Eve has never been associated with human sacrifices .
there were no virgins sacrificed if you didn't have you pumpkin out, there was none of that. Costumes came from people dressing up to scare away evil spirits. Trick or Treating came from the poor going around asking for alms. And the Jack O lantern is American in origin because the Pumpkin is a "new world" fruit.
In 609 it became a christian holiday. Celebrating the eve of all saints day.
Get your facts people.

eta 2- And when you read about things like Druids doing sacrifices, remember who wrote it. The ROMANS , the most hated enemy of the Druids/ Celts.

People tend to over analyze anything that is fun. Halloween became one of those over analyzed things.
To me it's a fun day, my kids loved it and still do. I'm already getting pictures of my grandkids dressed up in costumes. The month of October is fun if you draw the costume thing out all month long, it's amazing how amused little kids can stay while they are "in costume". So good for their little imaginations. Boys and girls get to be what they want to for a little while, super heroes, animals, doctors, monsters, ballerinas.... etc. FUN TO WATCH.
Ruining the fun day by saying it has something to do with devil worship is just ridiculous. ... and that's what most people think that don't allow their kids to celebrate. It's just wrong. EVERY day is a devil worship day if thats the way you roll.

growing up my mother was one of the many "uninformed" and we never got to participate - but strange that our church always had candy, costumes, etc. . . seemed counter productive - either celebrate or don't - you know?

Anyways, we do some low key stuff, but turning my house into a haunted mansion - no thanks. Halloween is just a fun night out for the kids and they get to pretend and get candy. I think it is a bit of a hassle and I prefer "fall" and thanksgiving that actually teaches some values to kids in the process. Not simply how to "score the best/most candy" LOL.

I may be in the minority here, but it is just a "non-holiday" play day in my opinion.

Yeah--I don't get it.

I have relatives who would only take their kids to church that night--to a HALLOWEEN party--with costumes and candy and fun. ?????

Sorry--I just can't look at a 3 year old fairy princess toddling up my driveway for a Kit Kat and think "Satan" or "demon"!

I don't like celebrating death and demons.

That being said, my kids have always dressed up, and gone trick-or-treating (they think they are too old for it now though).

We decorate a tiny bit, but more in the "fall" theme.

I'm amazed at how "all-out" some of my neighbors go.

My mother-in-law doesn't care for Halloween at all. While she always allowed my husband to dress up and go trick or treating she didn't like it. I think that she, somehow, thinks it's an evil holiday. Oh well, they're all coming over to our house this weekend for my hubby's 40th birthday party and they get to enjoy our Halloween decorations. I don't have a whole lot out, but I do have a few witches and gosts. It's a good thing that I don't have any skull or skeleton decorations because I know that would disgust her, although she would never say it to my face.

Halloween is in my top 2 favorite holidays and we celebrate big time! That being said, I see the wisdom of not celebrating it at school.
I think we can all see how costumes and sugary treats would negate a day of learning! Also, remember that a good portion of the kids in any given class will come to school on Nov 1 having had too much candy and too little sleep the night before. This can really add up to a lot of lost time curriculum wise.

We celebrate but I always hated dressing up - even as a little kid - and do not participate in any adults parties where we have to dress up - just not fun to me.

I know people who don't celebrate due to religious beliefs. I enjoy the holiday myself. I've given my daughter many halloween parties. There was no devil worshiping, no sacrifices, no calling upon dead spirits. Just candy and fun. The kids had a great time, which was the purpose. I respect the feelings and choice of others, but I am often amazed at how riled up people get about halloween. It is not that serious folks. I just don't get it? Honestly, I think we coud find something wrong with any and every holiday, but who wants to waste brain cells on that? Life is too short, to trip about halloween. Life has bigger issues.
