White Toe Nail

The nail on my big toe turns white and seems to be brittle. I have a pretty good diet and its just that one nail that seems to have a problem. Has anyone experienced this? It doesn't bother me aside from from just the way it looks.

What can I do next?

Sounds like fungus. Don't treat it yourself. See your doctor or a podiatrist (get a referral from your primary care or ask friends). It's pretty routine but it can get worse, so I'd nip it in the bud. Now is a good time when you can wear sandals. Take care of it.

its probably fungus. go see a podiatrist or your family doctor and they'll test you for it. i just went to the podiatrist today for the same type of problem and they prescribed me a nail polish that you swipe on daily until the fungus goes away (which takes months b/c the nail has to grow out).

Love this website! I had it on my big toe. Did some of these remedies and it cleared up. It took almost 6 months but I finally have a normal looking toe nail again!
Good Luck and God Bless!

My hubby and I had that and it turned out to be toenail fungus (yuck). It is most common on the big toe. Over the counter stuff is slow and ineffective, so we had to do prescription Lamasil. The generic stuff is inexpensive BUT you have to have 2 blood tests before and in the middle of treatment because it can damage your liver...no alcohol during the rather long treatment period. The good news is it cleared up. We think we got at at a public swimming pool. Our dermatologist said it is just cosmetic, but we really wanted rid of it.

I was a nail tech for 15 years. You have nail fungus. You can get an antifungal gel from a professional nail tech called Dr. G's. It's about $15, but it's the best. It's a very effective treatment if used correctly. The biggest mistake people make when trying to treat the fungus is clipping the nail too far back and/or digging under the nail with an orangewood stick or other device. This just lifts the nail from the bed encouraging new fungal growth. For correct application of the antifungal gel: Without lifting the nail, apply the gel by squeezing a bead along the tip of the underside of the nail and let it spread on it's own. It will start to work immediately, but continue applying daily until you begin seeing normal nail growth. The existing fungus will not go away, but it will stop growing. Continue clipping the nail, careful not to clip too much, and filing to smooth it as it grows out. It will take 4-6 weeks for the nail to
replace itself.

If the fungus does not go away with Dr. G's, you need to see a physician and possibly undergo a more invasive treatment such as Lamisil. Try the least invasive treatment first.

If you need more info, message me. HTH

My toe nail was like that for awhile and I thought it was a fungus, but when I went to podiatrist and they checked, it was not. They ended up diagnosing it some big long word I can not think of at the moment but basically its just a toenail that grows out discolored and thick (and can chip off easily) and there is no treatment for it. Luckily after years of dealing with the ugly toenail and constant clippings and filings it eventually returned to normal. Just to be sure it is not a fungus you should have it checked.
