I have a 6 mth old in the last few days has been having a out break of redness on his cheeks, nose and chin...its not a rash, its not risen...its just blood red. The first day he got it ,it was just his cheeks..then next day it was gone, its returned and now its his chin and nose too! Nothing has changed in detergents,foods/formula,etc...there is no fever. However, there is a drastic change with his sleeping habits...he got up last nite at 1am..and didnt go back to bed til 3:30am..and he got up 4 times from that time to 7:30 this morning..(ugh,sleepy!:P)
I researched the different viruses it could be,such as fifth disease, but, theres been no fever?Hes also been constipated...i went to walgreens and they gave me a suposatory to give him, worked immed...but then he had it again 2 days later,i gave him another one yesterday, and as of now, nothing! Do i give him another...or just take him to the drs??I know alot of time, viruses come thru babies skin....

Thanks for any input!

What can I do next?

I'd take him to the doctor. It could be so many different things...maybe he's cutting some new teeth, or maybe something he is allergic to in his diet.

I know its hard to keep from freaking out; especially when observing your baby's skin not looking the norm. If you can, set up an appointment with a pediatric dermotologist. The reason I suggest this is- they would be in a better position to tell you exactly what's going on with your son's skin because this is their specialty. Don't get me wrong, a pediatrician can treat common skin conditions, but if you want some certainty your best bet is a pediatric dermotologist. I have had to take my son several times because of some skin problems arising since he was 3 months old. Here are his doctors:
1. Dr. Kelly Warren, 9555 Lebanon Rd., #1002, Frisco TX
2. Prediatric Dermotology of North Texas, 1325 W. Northwest Hwy, Grapevine, TX.

I hope this helps. Good luck!!

My daughter has some very dry skin on her face right now and it looks pretty red and raw around her chin area. She is 2 years old, so I'm pretty sure it's just due to her drooling or something and it's chapping her face. She doesn't have any other symptoms though, so I would probably call the pedi and ask about your little one. He's much smaller than my daughter and the redness seems more prevalent on him than my daughter has. I hope he's feeling better soon!

My sons 5 month old picture looks just like what you are describing! He was about to cut teeth and the slobber/cold weather was chaffing his skin. Still you might call the on call nurse at your ped. office and ask them. They can tell you if you need to come in or not. Good Luck!

My first thought is that possibly he has a yeast imbalance. Yeast can cause discoloration in the skin without bumps or dryness. Make sure the area is well hydrated with a cream like Cetaphil (the BEST for babies especially those prone to sensitive skin). You can use a simple probiotic like acidopholus (from the health food store, it's a powder and you just put a tiny bit on his tongue once a day). Sleeping patterns are cyclical so that could be unrelated, but try to track it in a sleep journal for a few days and see if there's a pattern. The more information you have written down when you visit the doctor, the more likely they are to properly diagnose.
A word of warning about baby suppository's. Babies can become dependent on them. If you use them too regularly then the baby's sphincter muscles atrophy and then they can't have a bowel movement on their own. Try to help him have a bowel movement on his own by giving him a little bit of prune juice diluted with water in a bottle. This is not a permanent fix for long-term constipation, but can help temporarily.
Also - try a little baby massage. Lay him on his back in front of you with his feet closest to you. Put your hand on his stomach by your left knee and work in a clock-wise pattern across his stomach. This is the direction of digestion and can help to increase peristalsis (the body's natural ability to push food through the system).
If nothing helps within 2-3 days then go to your pediatrician first with as much information as possible, he can refer you to a pediatric dermatologist if he thinks it's not a viral or bacterial infection.
Hope it helps! Constipated, tired babies are NO fun!

Definitely call the doctor. I have a friend whose babies hardly ever run fever when they are sick. SOme just don't run fevers like others. SOmetimes you have to look at other symptoms. He's got alot and I think you'll be glad for calling the doc!!!! Good Luck!

My daughter had this on her cheek about two months ago. She was bitten by an ant above her eye the day prior. The next day her cheek (which wasnt bitten) had started turning pink and then the next day blood red as if someone had slapped her across the face. It was also warm to the touch when the rest of her skin was cool. I took her to the doctor who said that there might be a bacterial infection under the skin since it was warm to the touch they put her on a strong antibiotic and was better a few days later.

I would say go to the doctor!
