Was Answering a Question and Got a Virus Warning

I was answering the question about loaning money to a friend and when I clicked to post my response I got a screen up that said I could not post my answer until I took this poll. It was not suspicious looking and I could not do anything else. I clicked the "do the survey" and another tab came up. Suddenly my virus protection came up and said the file I was trying to access was infected.

So, mamapedia, you guys need to figure out what is going on.

Just to let everyone know, this infected file was stopped by my protection but yours may need to be updated just in case. Since I got this warning when I tried to post a response I would suggest you don't respond here before you update your virus stuff.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

It wasn't a pop up. It took me to a new page, well, sort of. It was the whole page but it didn't really have a new address in the address bar. I didn't think about hitting the back arrow because I didn't want to risk losing my answer.

I have pop up blocker installed and it is on. This is the first time anything like this has ever come up on this site. There are all kinds of polls along the side so I thought it might be one of those. I am glad it wasn't more of an issue, so far it seems like everything is normal.

I got this just a few minutes ago as well. I just closed out of everything right away. I didn't dare open it.
There definitely seems to be something wonky going on.
I guess I'm glad to know it wasn't just my computer!

M. from Mamasource chiming in. We don't use pop-ups, at all. No pop unders, overs or in-between's either. Best to set your browsers pop-up blocker into use.

Please do contact support if you think this is being caused by us. Thanks!

I saw the same box, Gamma. I exited out of MP, tried again, same thing. So I turned off my computer and turned it back on and it has not shown up.

I recommend that.

Also, write mamasupport and tell them. They won't see it here on your post.

I had something similar happen when I opened the "i really need your opinion" question. My computer went to purple screen with a little scary "death" face and then my computer crashed! Thank God I was able to restart it and I THINK it's okay, but I may get off of this site for a day or two, just in case :(

Linux (currently Puppy): 0 viruses since 2003. Every once in a while we scan for viruses just for sh*ts and giggles. I'm convinced (since I love a good conspiracy) that McAffee actually creates the code that infects your computer so they can then sell you the "cure".

They (the evil ones) will find a way to try to get to you no matter how many protection software systems & firewalls you have! In fact, I think the more you have the more they want in! It's a, 'challenge' for them! The CREEEEEEEPS!!!!!!!! I actually have better names to call them, but I am enjoying a peaceful morn' so I will restrain myself! Happy I am that you got it BEFORE it got you! Happy Thursday! :)

Sometimes malware/spyware/viruses will ACT like virus protection....when really--nothing. OR worse.

ETA: Gamma G: Go to your browser's preferences and check "block pop up windows" under the content tab.

I've had that happen a couple of times on here, the survey popup thingy.
You can get rid of it by hitting the "refresh" button.

thanks for letting me/us know!!!

I was able to close that tab. I don't take ANY surveys that pop up on my screen.

Our virus checker is sensitive like yours. I learned the hard way not to click on flashing icons or surveys...if I can't close it? I exit out of the program or restart my computer.

I think this is happening more since MP started doing the advertising. I remember Jo W. saying there was a way or a browser to run on that won't allow pop-ups - I just don't remember which one.!

Your computer sounds infected not something to do with this site.

I have never seen what you are speaking of and I don't even run an antivirus on this machine. I block or avoid that which will hurt my machine, seems to work better for me. :)

I got a similar window one time telling me to take a survey, but I don't remember anything about a virus. I thought maybe I had clicked on one of the ads rather than the "respond to question" button, so I just clicked "back" and then tried again. Worked for me.

Hmmm, I just answered the same question but I didn't receive any pop ups (never do on this computer and certainly not on this site). I think my friend who built the computer for me put every possible lock down, blocking feature on here.
