Video & Viruses on This Site

Has anyone else noticed the advertisements on this site are getting extremely annoying? I will have two videos with audio playing over each other at the same time sometimes. I understand that this is how the site makes money, but when does it become so annoying you stop visiting?

Also, this site produces a pop up that looks like it's a respectful Java update. It completely takes over the site and asks you to update Java. I made the mistake of doing this, and it downloaded malware on my computer! Luckily my husband is very computer savvy and was able to uninstall it and all it's little bugs, but it was very difficult as the virus erased the program he usually uses to get rid of those things. It took him all day. My fault for installing something - I thought Java was reputable. Since we've gotten rid of the virus, the pop up still takes over the site at time.

I like this forum and have gotten lots of great advise and perspectives over the years, but it's getting out of hand.

What can I do next?

I see ads along the side, but nothing as obtrusive as what you describe.

Could this be dependent on what internet browser one uses? Usually, I use Safari but will occasionally use Firefox, NEVER Internet Explorer.

I use AdBlock+ on my browser, so I never see ads of any sort on here or most other sites. The only type I can't avoid are commercials in streaming tv shows.

Please report to Mamapedia! They don't really read posts for things like this, so you will probably need to report directly to them.

I have not gotten any Java junk, but even our good virus and ad blockers have somehow let some of the annoying video ads get through a few times. The jerks who create these things are constantly working on ways around ad blocker and virus blockers, so be aware of that.

Never heard of someone very computer savvy that doesn't insist ad block be run on all their machines.

Java is reputable but they like to make money. You have to uncheck all their adverts when you update. My husband works with computers as a programmer and he didn't know that, completely jacked up our desktop. I get to fix that machine, woo hoo.

I can tell you that I do not run antivirus on two of my machines that I log onto this site with. Never got a virus so whatever you did, you did it. Not saying that in a you are a bad person way, just, this site is annoying but harmless.

So ad block, now! Uncheck boxes when you update Java and you will be fine.

Get an ad blocking add-on for your browser and all that goes away. I use Adblock Plus for Firefox.

I've had none of that happen to me. I ignore the ads most of the time. I did accidentally tap on one with a video. I just stopped it by going back to Mamapedia. The ads are only intrusive when I tap on them. I've found a few of them interesting. I've never seen the Java popup.

On my phone there are a few ads in squares on the right, across the top and on the bottom. They are tasteful. They are easy to ignore. I wonder if the problem is in your browser. I use Google. Or the page is different on a phone. I doubt that is the case since Mamapedia doesn't have 2 versions; one for computers and one for androids/iphones.

Today there are 2 small ads on the side and 1 small ad on the bottom. I didn't even notice them until your post. Later there is an inabtrusive banner across the top.

I have had the java issue happen too. It pops up every time I open MP on my PC - I don't click ads, it just pops up. I too thought it was legit the first time; fortunately, my malware software blocked the download. I've taken to mostly reading MP on my phone, because the java thing only happens when I read on PC, and not on my iphone.

First of all I have always turned the volume off of my online devices. Computer, iPad etc. I have never even heard any of the sounds or music that play with the games I play.

I also use Firefox and ad blocker.. I have no idea if there are audio ads.

So no, I had no idea this site has sounds coming through. I have been on here for about 6 years.

Thanks for posting this. I haven't had any issues, other than the annoying loud audio and animating full page ads every now and then, but I will keep an eye out for the java thing.

You can email the president of MP about the Java thing. His name is Marc.

____@____.com

One time there was an entirely inappropriate ad and I wrote complaining about it. They pulled the ad.

I don't have the video problem, but have had the Java issue. Thankfully my hubby recognized that it was fishy (I didn't see anything wrong with it) my security software also blocked it.

I would report this to Mamapedia. I've told them before when their ads got out of hand, like one where it played audio AND took over half my page and I couldn't get out of it. YES, I find the ads and such very annoying and half the time the javascript required for a reply to something doesn't load or it takes several minutes for all the ads to load so I can do anything. Really hampers the site. Thank you for the head's up. And hey, lookit, I'm seeing an add for "remove audio ads virus". I wonder what malware that might be???? Supposedly goes to "spywareremove.com" which I am suspicious of.

Thank you!

I was hearing barn yard sounds!!! I am new to this site so I wondered what was going on.

Thinking it could be a virus so I ran Norton and Malewarebytes but nothing showed up. I'm not tech savy, but I'll try to see if I can find this Java update file - I did see a pop up for that, and tried to close it (without hitting the wrong button) but it seemed to run anyhow ... arg!
