My son, Trevor, is 10 months old and is a very healthy baby. He eats anything you will put in his mouth and always seems to be hungry. From the time trevor was born, he threw up a lot. He was 6 lbs. 6 oz. when he was born, but lost down to 5 lbs. 14 oz. in less than 2 days, and continued to lose. When Trevor was 6 days old, he was admitted to the hospital due to severe jaundice and a LOW temperature (94-95 degrees). The doctors told me that he had spinal menengitis. He was on IV antibiotics for 7 days. By the end of the week, his jaundice was gone and his temp was normal. 5 days later, he was admitted to the hospital again, this time because he was losing weight. After a few days in the hospital, the diagnosed him as having acid reflux. They put him on a special formula. At 7 1/2 months, i decided to try a lacto-free formula. It seemed to really help, but he still spits up more than normal. He is a very active baby and is skinny. He eats all the time, but is still in 6-9 month pants. The doctor is pleased, but I still wonder if there is anything I could do to help the spitting up. Any advice?

What can I do next?

My son was the exact same way, they put him on expensive formulas and medicines for his reflux. It took him a really long time to gain weight, he was nearly off the charts most of his infant life. You would never know this now. He is a very healthy 27lb 19month old. I think they just have to grow out of it. My doctor said that usually children will grow out of it at about a year. The only thing we still do differently for him is give him soy milk. You will really notice a difference once they are getting the majority of thier diet from solid foods (grown up foods). It easier to digest when they aren't getting so much liquid.

My son wasn't getting full when he was a baby so he would easily drink up to 8 oz at a time. Plus he had acid reflux. So his pediatrician told me to thicken up his milk with cereal. It filled him up and helped his acid reflux. Just start out with a tablespoon and shake up. I hope this helps..

I really don't have any advice for the reflux other then to talk to your doctor. But as for the size of clothes he's in don't worry too much a/b that. My best friends daughter is 10 mths old and still wear's some 3-6 mth clothes and 6-9 mth clothes. My son is a hefty boy and is still wearing 6-9 mths. And when my daughter was lil she did the same thing. As long as he is putting on some weight then I wouldn't worry too much about the weight but I really would see about getting him on something to keep him from getting damage to his esophagus.... Hope this helps a lil.

I think I can help you!!! My son is now 5 months old. He was admitted in the hospital for an operation for laryngo malasia when he was 2 months old. I had breastfed him up until that point with occasional formula for outings or just for supplements because he wasn't full enough from me!! I had discussed this with the ENT who was doing his surgery about him not being full and spitting up. When the Dr. finished his surgery came to the waiting room to tell me how things went and told us about his esophogus was very red and inflamed so much that he took a biopsy of it. So he said he did beleive 100% that he had acid reflux (GERD). He also said that when he refluxes that he aspirates a small amount into his lungs. We had discussed about thickening his milk, but neither of us wanted to take him from breast milk unless it was really an issue.

At this point we decided something had to be done about the spitting up, because it is just like our heartburn....when babies or children refulx it actually eats away at your esophogus!!!! EEEKK!!! They also thought that he had sleep apnea....because when he would reflux he would quit breathing and sometimes choke. When we were leaving the hospital 3 days later I told them I had to do something. They told us to try the thickened milk....with cereal in the milk or prescription thickener like for the elderly. Another Dr. told us about the ENFAMIL AR LIPIL which has the added rice starch in it. They sent us home with some and it has worked wonders!!!! He has been on it pretty well since. He also has to take liquid Zantac. Actually people think milk calms down the stomach but actually the Dr.'s have told us it produces more acid. So avoid an excess or milk or acidic foods or drinks. Like orange juice...(my 2 yr old to this day still can't drink orange juice)....peaches....etc.

The formula is much thicker or can be after it sits for a few minutes before feeds....so you will need larger nipples.....BUT IT WORKS!!! He rarely spits up now and when he does it is just a little because the rice starch actually thickens the spitup before it comes up.....so we don't have a huge mess!!!! TRY IT!!!! If you have any questions about it, pm me because it can be very frustrating!!!!

HOPE THIS HELPS YOU!!!!! :)

S., My son was the same way and had acid reflux what our Dr. yold us to do was to feed him in is car seat or bouncer and let him sit there for a few minutes until the milk has settled then let him get up and play and this worked for us. Also the size he is in let that be the last thing on your mind because my daughter who is 4 can still fit into a 24 month shorts in the summertime and she is average on her weight is what our Dr. tells us. Hope this helps in anyway possible. Your friend A. V.

My 23 month old had juandice in the hospital when born as well. He had to stay an extra day because of it. He was so sleepy from it that he didn't want to eat it caused him to lose weightJust a vicious circle. He constantly spit up as well. I nursed, tried soy, lacto free nothing seemed to help. I even thought he had a peanut allergy at some point. Nothing. The doctors didn't seem as concerned as I was. This was my third child and it never happened with my other two. all I can tell you as long as he is eating and putting on some weight. He will outgrow it. My son weighs 30 pounds now. Although he was always in the top of his weight. Because he always eat so much to make up for what he lost. I know how this can be very scary especially for a first time mom. Good Luck.

As the mommy of a "reflux" and lactose intolerant baby, I know how frustrating it can be trying to figure out what to do with your baby. My son is 19 months old now and just now weighs 20 pounds. And we only just "graduated" to forward facing in the car. We have hovered in the 5-10 percentiles for his size from the get go. He still wears 12 month clothes. He did have a HUGE growth spurt between 15 and 18 months though. Gained something like 4 pounds!

If they new formula doesn't help you may try going on some sort of meds. My son was on Zantac 3xs per day up until he turned 15 months. And like some of the other moms have said keep him upright both during and after feedings for about 30 minutes or so. You may also try inclining the mattress of his bed to that he sleeps in an upright position as well. You mentioned that your son will eat anything you put in front of him. You may try to make sure not to give him much citrus or foods that have a high acid content. Our doctors biggest concern isn't his size but the damage that may be occuring in his throat. He should start growing out of is soon. Most babies outgrow it between 12-18 months. Some are a little bit slower about it. I know that the spitting is just exhausting though!! For awhile when my husband came home from work, if I didn't smell like spit up he thought I had taken the baby to his mom's!(it was just an ongoing thing) And the laundry was never ending.

Things are much much better now. We rarely have a bad day.

There is light at the end of the tunnel!

Sometimes babies are smaller then we expect. I have a four year old that doubled his birth weight fast, and then my three year old is small like your son(he can still wear 24 month pants, fits great in waist but too short). He did a lot of spitting up when he was a baby it stopped when he was on mostly solids maybe one bottle a day. it will get better as he gets a little older and some kids are just small. I hope this helps a little. S.

Now reflux is something that I have experience with...I had 3 kids that had it really bad...ask the doctor for a perscription for reglan. Sometimes they like to perscribe zantac, but zantac is peppermint flavor and not to many babies like it and they put up a fight. Reglan is orange flavor and more tollerable to the tastebuds so they're more willing to take it...but it works really well. Consequently, he's not hungry all the time...he's trying to get rid of the burning acid in his esophegus...he'll eat or drink anything that isn't nailed down to get rid of the burning bad taste. If your doctor won't accomodate you, it may be time to find another doctor who will. The more he vomits like that, it's doing damage to his asophegus and his teeth...think about it...it's acid...acid eats through things. Also you want to keep him in an upright position for about an hour after he eats or drinks anything...gravity won't solve the problem, but it will help...and you may consider taking the wheels off the crib, and jacking the head of the crib up a bit with some thick books.
