Vesicoureteral Reflux

Yes...My daughter was diagnosed with this as an infant. We were seen by Dr. Bothelo (not sure if that's spelled right) at Childrens Hospital Oakland's Nephrology department. We were concerned because my daughter is multiply handicapped and medically fragile...so corrective surgery was not something we wanted. The condition was monitored for a couple of years and resolved itself...Dr. Bothelo explained that this is common in children and usually resolves...She was right and we are glad we had her help...Best of Luck to You!

My daughter got a bladder infection around 4 months and after some tests she was diagnosed with bilateral reflux. The worst part the VCUG, the test to determine if and how bad the reflux is (hers was a level 4 out of 5). It was horrible and I was in tears with her, because I couldn't hold her and she had no clue what was going on. The gave her antibiotics to treat the original infection and then a profalaxis (sp?) to keep the infection at bay. Luckily we never experienced any additional infections. We are Kiaser members so we saw a pediactric specialist in Fremont; Dr Kim and I was very pleased with his knowledge and the care we received with him. He explained in detail the reflux, and explained that it was possible that she grow out of it in time, etc. He also explained some options for us and we decided to get the Deflux procedure done for her when she was 1. It was an outpatient procedure and she handled it very well, better than me. I am happy to say she is 3 now and since she's been potty trained about 2 1/2 we took her off antibiotics and there have been no incidents since.

My son was borbn with this - the way we found out was that, at 5 days old, he got a bladder infection that landed him in the hospital. They put him on prophylactic antibiotics and when he was a couple months old they did some procedure to watch the urine flow - and he had outgrown the reflux issue. At the time I was very worried he might have to have surgery to correct this - the alternative if they do not outgrow it. I had a friend whose children had it and she said they outgrew it. Sometimes the children are born and everything hasn't fully fniished developing. The first 3 months of their life is sometimes called the 4th trimester because their bodies are still finishing developing. In our son's case, he and his twin sister were a few weeks premature and tiny, so they wre a little behind. There is a very good chance your child will outgrow the reflux.

How old is your child? when did they discover this? are there any other kidney or urinary issues? where do you live?
My son was diagnosed pre birth and we have been seen by Dr Larry Baskin and his staff at UCSF. He is the best in the area and I think he is at Children's Hospital in Oakland as well.

Hello, my daughter (who is now 10 ) was diagnosed with this at 6 wks. A kidney infection at 3 weeks landed her in the hospital. She had hi grade, bilateral reflux that never resolved. She took a preventative dose of antibiotics till she was 2 and had surgery. She had sonagrams and cystograms periodically as well as blood tests to check urerter and kidney function for those two years. Then some follow up sonograms, etc post op. I had to take her temp every day and if it was 100.5 (low grade) I had to take her into the dr or ED (depending on time.day)for a culture cause the risk of infection was high.

She was under the care of a urologist and her peditrition.

her surgery was successful-she has other unrelated health issues, but her urinary tract, kidneys are fine.
