I'm at at loss. We can send treats to school but of course they have to be store bought. I was trying to think of another option. Any ideas ladies?

***Any food brought to school for the kids HAS to be store bought. Bummer because THAT'S what I'm REALLY good at...

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I went thru my secret stash of things I have from the dollar section at Target. I forgot that I had things from after Christmas that they had maked down to 50 cents. Looks like his little friends are getting packets of stickers,if anything it'll help build their fine motor skills.

They have to be store-bought? That's new! I know it may sound lame, but what about little boxes of raisins and attach the Valentine card to it? My son's preschool friends have sent home the little packages of fruit chews, pre-packaged pretezels, trail mix... Hit the "snack aisle" and see what you can find!

some healthy options I've seen are:
fresh strawberries (put in little plastic treat bags)
Clementine "Cutie" tangerines - this time of year they often have seasonal valentine's day stickers on them

When my DDs were in preschool we would put rainbow goldfish crackers into little treat bags - not the healthiest, but at least it wasn't another sugary thing.

You can find all of these in individual sizes - Rice Krispie Treats, Fruit Snacks, Pretzels.

You could go to Target or Walmart and browse the seasonal Valentine area and see what they have. There are lots of choices. That really is a bummer that you can't make something special to take.

How about non-food items. We just throw out 95% of the processed candy/cookie stuff we get since we are trying to teach DS about 'real' food and how much better it is for you. Heart shaped erasers, red pencils, Wiki Sticks Valentine packs, mini-packs of red and white pipe-cleaners. And maybe work through your PTO to change the store-bought rule - it encourages very unhealthy eating.

I am with you on that one... I don't donate to my kids school for bake sales because they don't let me bake it. Sad commentary to our society really.

As for Valentines day, my daughter gives out cards with candy or stickers. When she was younger (and couldn't write her name) I signed the cards for her, but she drew the pictures.

My son is in preschool also, and he chose to hand out his favorite granola bars vs. candy. ;)
